I have an e2220 @ 2.4ghz and a 8800GT, my frames get choppy at 1920 x 1080 on HIGH for games like Borderlands and MW2. (medium is fine)

Which part is in more need of an upgrade?

thanks all

Both. But if you must choose replace the GPU first.

The CPU should be overclocked and the GPU isn't strong enough for 1080p in many games. Do the games run better at a lower resolution? If they do, your GPU is likely the culprit.

Upgrading the GPU would give the biggest performance boost, but dual core's at that speed will bottleneck your GPU especially with quad core optimized games.

Won't be going anywhere at that resolution with that GPU even if he had an i7.

he should gain a few frames, and if he does oc the cpu to 3 ghz the gpu will be the only thing he would really need to upgrade
