alright so i want to overclock my cpu (955), but i dont feel safe doing it with a stock cooler because it gets near the 60s when i try and the max safe temp is 62. also the area around my computer is warm anyway (it's pretty confined and dust gets there easily) so it gets warm on idle (like 43-45) on stock voltages and settings

so i decided i want to buy an aftermarket cooler.noise isn't a huge factor as much as cooling is, even though a silent cooler would be nice

i was looking at the

scythe mugen2

cooler master v8

zalman 9700

i would like the v8, but its mass is .87kg and so is the scythe while the zalman is .76 kg which seems a lot safer, however is about 20 bucks more than the cooler master and 30 more than the scythe.

like i said i am leaning towards the cooler master, however is does have a lot of mass which does concern me.

what do you guys think? also anyother suggestions would be nice, preferably ones that weigh less and offer similar performance

thanx in advance

Thermaltake Blue Orb 2 (huge heatsink but keeps very cool and looks great)

Coolermaster Hyper TX5 (pretty average but better than stock and alot smaller than Blue Orb)

The Scythe Mugen 2 is the best on that list, especially if you put two good fans on it...

Well I know the coolermaster V8 is a good cooler since I own one :P and its quiet too. And have seen some with i7's overclocked 3.6 - 4.0 Ghz keeping them under 70C most stay around 60C under load. Also being that my cpu is a 125w dual core being 90nm which runs alot hotter then newer 45nm quads it should keep cpu under 55C at 100% load if overclocked. My cpu idles room temp and is usually only 40-42C with hours SETI@Home running.

sorry for bumping this thread, but i didn't want to make a new one. i was looking at some more reviews and saw this

http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=26116

apparently it has awesome reviews and i am willing to spend 60 bucks on it + a fan. is this fan better than the others or would you guys still reccommend something else?

Thermalright or Noctua. They make the best coolers in the industry.

So you're actually judging a cpu cooler because you hurt yourself? That's a first :?

On topic, that Zalman cooler is inferior to both the V8 and the Mugen. I've heard many good things about the V8, but the Mugen 2 apparently can compete very well with the top of the line coolers (Thermalright Ultra and Prolimatech Megahalems) given it has good fans. I'd say go for the Mugen 2, as there are good fans that don't break the bank.

yeah i think i am going to go with the mugen, but i have one last question. will it break my board? .87kg seems like a lot you know

Man TC, you really have to be reading some really old threads to be coming up with those CPU coolerrs. Those are old. I highly recommend the Noctua NH-U12P. The first thing you think of when you see this cooler is "quality". And its one of the top performing. Even better than the Thermalright Ultra 120 which was top dog a while ago.

Oh sorry, I didn't know there was some revolutionary new breakthrough in CPU cooling... Besides, the one I recommended is one of the newest, and your's is from 2007.

What inferior ? i have seen a dozen benchmark / test setup with cpu cooler example Beefdog Thermarlright 120 True + 1 Scythe kaze Did Perform less cool then Prolimatech megahalem + 1 Scyteh kaze 300rpm for like 3C from what i heard of him lol i remember saw picture of is thermlaright 120 true with is Phenom II X2 955 LOL then a prolimatech megahalme + same fan If you want Very Best cooling

How ever it Seem from xbits lab to promote : megahalems / 120 True / IFX-14 / Scythe mugen II While V8 (in there test it seem to fail) but from other people benchmark OC forum it do well and reach the 4.0ghz+ on core i7 920 C0 Stepping apprently : while D0 Stepping is rumour from what i seing : to run less HOT & allow +200mhz OC much more Stable
