I just finished my first build. My CPU is an E8400 @ 3.0gHz. My bios says it's running at 127 degrees. I heard it should be running at only 100. I'm using stock cooling and stock paste and can't go purchase better paste until next week. Should I be concerned? My bios sets itself to shut down at 255 degrees so it seems I have a lot of heating before things get ugly.

Seems pretty high... id go easy on it until you get a better CPU fan...

Thanks, do you think it'll be OK for setting up my internet connection and tweaking vista? I'd like to play a few hours of Oblivion. Maybe I'll just see how the temps increases as I use it.

That's only ~52 degrees Celsius. That might be considered a little high but its certainly not dangerous. The sweet spot would be in the low 40's at idle, high 40's under load. But you don't really have to worry until you start getting to the high 60's.

PS. If you wanna test it, run prime95 for 20 minuts or so and watch the temps.

Oh, I see now, I didn't realise you were talking about farenheit, I was thinking 127 celsius is insane, I think you are ok up until around 80 degrees celsius.

Unfortunately, I am talking about 127 degrees celcius. Like I said, my BIOS will shut down the computer at 255 Celcius. I know, this seems insanely hot to me, too. But why would the shut-down temps be set so high if it wasn't safe. Also, Intel had their developers forum and they said something about E8xxx chips operating at 100C, but I don't have the link now.

What software should I monitor my temps with? Perhaps my error is on my thermometer...

Thats not possible. Thats 260 degrees fahrenheit. Your computer would be in flames right now if that where true. GPU's are made to run much hotter then CPU's and even they clonk out a moch over 90C.

I suspect a problem with your temp sensor.

PS. Give Speedfan a try.

if that's farenheit then that's perfectly ok... i have a friend who's underclocked prescot actually could reach that (about 100c idle) :S

I'm using a 3ghz e8400 cpu with stock cooler, and its 41 C, and maybe high 40s to low 50's under load. I think your temp monitors are not reading things right

A CPU should be at max of 60 C. It can operate up to 80 to 90C, but this may damage your CPU, and short its liftime. If you have a problem with CPU temperature you should buy a better cooler.

Your Bios is wrong, if it was running at that heat the CPU would shut itself off every-time, if your experiencing instability then underclock your CPU but its like Intel have been saying theres no program or BIOS that shows the correct temp.

That cant be. You or your bios is wrong. It is showing temperature in F.

I think it might be your temperature sensor. If it was really running at 127 degrees C, I doubt your computer would be running stably. Is your fan connected to the motherboard properly, and does it have a sensing wire? When I fixed up my old computer to use as a backup, I put it into a full-size case (it was a low profile PC to begin with). I had to jury rig a cooler, and though my infared thermometer reads the CPU temp as being 30 degrees C, the motherboard thinks it's more like 120. If you can, take the temperature of the heatsink with an infrared thermometer. That will tell you if your CPU is running hot or if it's simply a bad sensor.

I think you're right. My PWM temps fluctuate around 35C, my system stays around 28C, and my CPU occasionally flashes N/A when not at a perfectly static 127C. I'm still concerned that my shutdown temps are labeled at 255C/491F. So, it shuts down after the bread is done baking?

I'll open up my computer and look at the fan, is there anything I should be looking for re: the temp sensor?

Thanks. This has been the only glitch in my first build so I guess I'm doing OK.

that is high, however that cpu has a high clock, I'm sure it doesnt run cool anyway. Are you using a stock little cpu cooler?? I'd invest In a big ol Zalman cpu cooler for that cpu, BTW nice shoice thats a kick ass dual core.

and 100 C is hot enough to melt the motherboard. water boils at 100C, so it your cpu is at 120C its gona die, quick.......

My e8500 (stock speeds) with a different cooler runs 30 C idle and around 47 C load, but never goes over 50 C (only seen that in prime 95).

What care are you using?
