So as if Activision wasn't playing the Mussolini of the game publishers these days here's something that I just found.

For those of you who knew about King's Quest from Sierra back in the days a team of fans were working on King's Quest 9: The Silver Lining. Vivendi who enventually bought the King's Quest franchise as well as the entire Sierra product line shut down the project in 2005. Then a few months later after many hate mails submitted to Vivendi and a very good petition the game was OK'd to continue on KQ9. This game was coming out for free to close up the entire storyline since Sierra had never really tied up all the loose ends. This was to be a multi episodic adventure game that would probably have filled over 4-5 DVDs worth of animations, script, graphics, etc... It was huge. These people worked on it for 9 years. Just recently Activision who bought up Vivendi and everything it owned has now submitted a letter to this group working on KQ9 and has told them to dismantle their work, their forums and everything related to it.

Wow Activision you really know how to piss off fans of IPs you own don't you?

And it ain't over till the fat game publisher sings!

What does Activision make anyway besides Call of Duty or Guitar Hero? That's all I ever hear about, and the occasional Spider-Man game. I know some people don't like EA but at least they have a variety of titles from established franchises (Battlefield, Command and Conquer) to new ones (Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, Spore, Crysis, Army of Two, Dante's Inferno). Yea I know, it's bizarro world now, EA diversifying its portfolio!

Zenimax (Bethesda) and Valve support and encourage the mod community, and their fans love them for it. Activision does not want your love, only your monies... and potentially your soul.

This game was coming out for freeserieus

That, in a nutshell, is why it got shutdown. Good ol' Actigreedy.

Activision didn't make Call of Duty or Guitar Hero, they published them. Big difference. Activision hasn't made a decent game in a long time, now they just wait until one of there developers has a successful game, fires anyone on the team they think will give them trouble, then they proceed to water down and milk the IP. I would also add that EA didn't develop any of the games you mentioned ether, but at least they allow the developers to keep some semblance of control over them.

Wrong, Activision merged with Blizzard Entertainment. But Activision have no say when it comes to blizzard's games

Greedy publishers ruin gaming more than pirates (like the guy above said).

This sort of thing happens all the time... Nintendo has ordered Cease and desist letters on several occasions (canceling several Freeware projects including an entire 2D OoT remake that took years to develop by a single person), EA has done this (i.e mods involving Dungeon Keeper characters), THQ has done this with the Warhammer license (countless 40k mods have been dismantled). Everyone license holder does this. I am surprised no one has jumped on Mechwarrior: Living Legends yet, unless there is some sort of tie to the original license holders. Once again, Activision singled out because everyone hates how Bobby Kotick runs his business. Hate the man, not the company.

This sort of thing usually happens for a number of reasons... the most likely of which is the publishers fear that the free game will tarnish the name of their property. It is also possible that there are plans for a KQ game in the future, and they don't want a free title interfering with sales of their game. But this is NOTHING new and is certainly not an activision only event.
