firing the heads of infinity ward, really? They also caned the devs that developed their guitar hero games, I bet if they didn't have blizzard they'd be going bankrupt within a few short years. It seems they are losing money on everything but pc, and are blaming their devs, even the successful ones. The pattern is, they publish a successful game, oversaturate the market with sequels, then shut done the dev when it fails. Infinity Ward didn't want to play along, so this is what activision decides to do. No wonder they keep losing money outside of the pc market (blizzard).

Let me rephrase something from NeoGAF:

How is Activision shooting themselves in the foot exactly? Because they're protecting the IP they own and control? Because they (allegedly) came down hard on the heads of IW for dealing behind their back and in breach of a contract they signed?

I get that you may like the games that IW create, but if Zampella and West were guilty of any of the above then they wholeheartedly deserve what they got.

Im not sure I buy that, considering how activision operates. there is a pattern and Infinity Ward wasnt playing ball. New ip, make 1000 sequels, let dev go when its stale. Does it really make sense to have a call of duty game every year in the long run?

Not sure of the full story, but if they did breach their contract then the company was within their rights to give them the boot.. regardless of what they have done for the company, if they were doing deals behind their backs then any boss would sack them.

This can't be stressed enough. The Blind rage towards activision is ridiculous... The idea that "they deserved it" never crosses their minds because they would rather hate on a smart business man who makes more money in one year than they will ever see in their life time.

but that sounds like bs, i think we all know what really happened. Infinity ward wanted to make the games they wanted to make, activision wants call of duty 7.

What happened is that The GH series has when down the drain after GH 3. I wonder why  . Each sequal brought in less and less profit and in the last two games they have lost money over 200 million. So they are getting rid of the team because 1 saves them money from payroll and and the GH series needs a restart.

maybe releasing 11 guitar hero games in one year was a bit much? Its typical activision business practices that caused the failure of guitar hero.

If that's so, then maybe IW shouldn't be so cocky about Call of Duty. They're in a public conflict with Treyarch, which wasn't even aware that IW took the franchise in a modern direction before the reveal back in 2007. The executable for MW was called iwsp3, and IIRC for MW2 it was iwsp4. The credits song at the end of MW made fun of Treyarch. One of the developers voiced the black dude from MW and rapped in the credits. They boasted they've built their own engine for MW, yet something happened behind the scenes because MW2 has a splash screen that aknowledges it's using a modified id Tech 3. They're unbelievably smug about everything related to Call of Duty.

And they also made it OBVIOUS a MW3 game will be developed. Considering their attitude towards Treyarch, the plan was to develop it themselves.

I agree with alot of what the OP said. Infinity Ward made the best games of the Call of Duty series. I think that without them, the series may as well be dead. Each time Treyarch made a game in the series, there was a noticeable drop in quality. It was stupid to come out with a new COD game basically every year, alternating which developer made the game once we got past COD2. That's how you kill a series in the long run (Need for Speed anyone?).

But then it was said that mw3 was going to be developed by former ea devs that worked on dead space... http://www.gamespot.com/news/6245073.html

I like all the things you just posted about Infinity Ward. Treyarch sucks, and their games prove it. IW SHOULD have been the only dev. working on the COD series all along.

yea I would be pretty smug too if another developer to a game I founded, put love, time, and work into...and essentially ruined it.

I still dont understand why Treyarch even got involved. I hear nothing but bad things about CoD 3, and World at War was just completely dull and unnecessary.

All right, let's ignore the whole engine debacle, which was a complete dick move. Let's also ignore the cIassics Treyarch/Xatrix worked on in the past, like the Quake 2 expansion, Kingpin, Redneck Rampage, RTCW or Die By The Sword.

How does Treyarch suck?

They built COD3 in nine months.

They worked more than a year on WaW having no clue what IW was working on. They only got the engine and had to figure out everything on the fly. And then they were forced to remake MW's multiplayer instead of building upon the very well received COD3 MP.

WaW is easily the best WW2 shooter.

Also it seems to me IW are just a bunch of dicks for acting like this towards Treyarch, but not saying anything about EA's Medal of Honor - which was their original franchise.

I hope my friends and I aren't the only ones who realize that the engine used in MW and WAW is just a re-hashed version of the COD2 engine. It doesn't take a very keen eye to see that. Whether or not it was an original engine when COD2 came out, I don't know. Maybe it was a modified ID tech 3. But the same basic engine is in use from COD2 through WAW, if not MW2 as well.

It's been a long time since those classics (which I find the greatness of Kingpin and Redneck Rampage debateable). World at War is not a very good game. It has some of the worst A.I. I've ever seen, some of the most annoying level design, and some of the most repetitive gameplay in a WW2 shooter. IMO, and in the opinions of most reviewers, COD2 was a FAR better game than WAW. WAW felt like a cheap rip-off of something that used to be great.. which is exactly what it is. The game was also unnecessarily hard, and had completely unrealistic enemy respawning that they didn't even attempt to hide. All in all not a very good game. Halfway-decent, but far from great.

Let's not even get into the steaming pile of waste that was COD3. I don't place all the blame on Treyarch though, as I'm sure Activision was pushing them pretty hard to get the game done fast. It showed. Another example of a mediocre-at-best effort by Treyarch is Quantum of Solace, the bond game. That's one of the most scripted, bland, and generally sucky shooters I've played in a LONG time.

You ever seen old black-and-white footage of people enjoying hula-hoops (do any of you even know what a hula-hoop is?) Well, rhythm games are the hula-hoop of the New Millennium. Mark my words, all of these games will end up in the "What were we thinking?" category (along with the Hummer and reality TV shows) as we remember the times when many people stood slack-jawed in front of their TVs while fiddling with plastic instruments that cost a lot of money. Oh, the embarrassment.

its IW fault in the first place for selling their soul to activision
