The upcoming DX10 game, Age of Conan, recommends a 4ghz or faster CPU...don't you guys think that's a bit high?

Where did you collect that bit of confusion? There is no official System Requirements information offered on the official web site, or if there is, it's very well hidden to keep it hard to find. The Test Lab is literally offering a WAG at this point, and their estimates of dual core equivalencies are typically way out in left field.

One of the official forums had a quote from a developer saying that Conan's minimums would be about on a par with the Oblivion requirements, which are a 3 GHz P4, or better. That same quote referred to a Radeon 9800 as a similar minimum (and that's approximately the same as Oblivion also).

Actually, what they are saying is that none of the sub- 3 GHz P4s will run it correctly, and the minimum is a CPU equivalent to that P4 or the A64 3000+ (which is rated as if it was a P4 running 3.0 Ghz). You have to look up the C2Ds at Toms hardware Guide, on the CPU charts there, to see which of them are better than an AMD A64 3000+ (probably all, if not a huge majority). Ignore the weird numbers that SR Test Lab offers for the dual core CPUs.
