Ive seen different fans appreciate both games, and other fans praise one over the other, play the Demo of AOE III and just buy AOEII+Exp. 2 is cheap, and if you like the demo of III then buy it as well.
Both are excellent games and offer different styles of game play. AOE II is more Medieval age style of combat with swords, bows, etc. while AOE III is more gunpowder related with musketeers, cannons, ships, etc. both are must buys if you like historical RTS.
