What's you guys' thoughts on Aion. I have heard nothing but great things about the beta and from people playing the Asian version. I think it is time for a new MMO to emerge and clench the throne, WoW is gettin real old. I think it's time and Aion could do it. What are your thoughts on it?

I hear it's good, the character customization is very comprehensive (check youtube for the Obama Aion one! It's hilarious), but I hear the actual game play is somewhat simplified from WoW as well as character development. BUT, it's got it's own uniqueness to I guess hold it's own, especially if there are regular updates to the game in the form of new classes, items, and abilities. Hopefully it does get a nice following and doesn't drop off in popularity only after a couple months like Conan.

I can honestly say that it is NOT a simplified WoW. The combat system is alot more streamlined than WoW, so it's easier to use, but by no means simplified. If any MMO has a chance to kill WoW, it's Aion. I just hope enough people take the leap and try it out.

Same price as WoW per month, and you're paying for a better game.

Nothing will kill WoW. It will only go away when it is so old that no one wants to play anymore. Only time will kill it!

The same question gets asked everytime a new big MMO comes out, and the same answers float around each time and while they are popular for the first month or so, eventually people go back to their other MMO's because thats what they have played for so long and they tend to miss all their characters etc on that mmo.

Though Aion does look great, and it plays pretty darn good too (I have played for a while on the Chinese version), what it does lack compared to the oh so popular WoW (I'm not knocking it, I have a level 80 infact, its just getting a little stale and unbalanced as of the past month or so), What it lacks is the backstory and extremely detailed lore that Warcraft has managed to build up on over all these years, and unfortunately thats not exactly something that you can just create.

Aion does have a story, in depth characters / races, etc but it just doesnt have the same engrosing feel to it, so I'm just hoping that they can keep people hooked based on gameplay that has great quests (from what i've played that is) and good PvP, and that they dont just rely on pretty graphics and wings to help them through.

Going back to the Lore and story aspect of MMO's though, this is where I think Star Wars : The Old Republic will shine, everyone knows the star wars saga even if its just a little part of it, and there is just a near limitless amount of material that they can use, which on top of biowares excellent writing and their incredibly ambitious Voice Over project, I think they may be onto the next winner. Will it take over WoW though? Probably not no, purely for the fact that WoW has been going for so long and people are attached to it. But I think it could take some people from their subscription base and maybe even sit at the #2 spot, and I really hope it works out for them, as its looking like a fantastic project which I hope turns out to be a fantastic MMO, I can safely say I am looking forward to that more than Aion.

Though I will be getting the CE of Aion most likely though!

TLDR - Read the post and stop being lazy

I've got my CE of Aion on pre-order, but I agree somewhat on the TOR ideas. I don't think WoW will be crushed by Aion (I wish it would be, WotlK broke the game), but TOR could possibly do the most damage. I will be playing the crap out of TOR, and Aion is my MMO to tide me over until then. :3

Depends on what you mean by "it". If "it" is gaining more subscribers than WoW then no, I don't think it'll come close. If by "it" you mean being a good game and a decent alternative, then probably yes it will.

I don't see on Gamestop where it says it's the single best selling game. It says its one of the best selling games on PC currently. As for "its not even out" yeah obviously they are counting pre-orders or it wouldn't make sense.

Warhammer was also supposed to be the next DAOC but it never really captured the magic because the end game was supposed to be RvR but contained way too much PvE instead. Hopefully Aion doesn't fall into that.

Eventually something will unseat WOW - but what? And when?

My friends, I am here today to answer that question. Has anybody here watched the television show 'Happy Days'? That is what I am talking about, my friends. A Happy Days MMO. You can play as whichever character you please, The Fonz, Richie, Potsi, Joani, Ralph, Howard, or Marion. Hang out with the gang at Arnold's, or simply get in your car and drive.

No but seriously, I don't see anything unseating WOW. The PC Gamer podcasters discussed this topic on one of their recent podcasts, and according to them, a guy at sony (or was it EA) did some kind of analysis and decided that if you were going to unseat WOW you'd need more than a half-a-billion dollars to do so. I can only speak for myself, but The Old Republic might end up being the very first MMO to get my credit card number - hasn't happened yet, I've never given my number to any maker of an MMO. I always quit after the first month, or after my pre-paid gamecard runs out.

Aion is a great experience from what I have played so far. However, it won't put a dent in WoW... no MMO will. The only thing that can kill WoW is WoW and time. However, Aion is a great landing place for people like me and a lot of you who got bored with WoW and are looking for a great new MMO. Even the betas are solid and a blast... can't get any more specific than that because of the NDA.

Aion is too "smart" for the hardcore WoW fans. You actually have to put some thought into Aion and you need to use your brain to figure things out...

Aion isn't "dumbed down" enough for most WoW fans to appreciate what it offers.

I've been participating in the betas (I missed the first one) and out of the 72 hours (maybe a little more) that the betas run, I've logged a good 36 hours of that time every beta and for some reason it's got my attention more then WoW ever did. WoW was and still is (at least the last time I played some - maybe 1.5 years ago now) very simplified and dumbed down. It's boring....I need something to entertain my brain and WoW doesn't cut it. Aion on the other hand keeps my attention and holds it. Longest I played WoW without a break was maybe 3 or 4 hours. I've went a solid 8 hours on Aion and only stopped because I realized that it's 4am and I had to get some sleep because the wife and kid (and the dogs) would have me up around 10am at the very latest.

Personally, I feel that Aion is a cross between WoW (maybe 35% like WoW) and Guild Wars (the remaining 65%). I enjoy the crafting system more then what WoW can offer with their's and I like the feel of the game - just like I enjoyed Guild Wars.

It's hard to explain. If Aion gets a trial period, I suggest any MMO fan to try it out and see if you like it. Only a first hand experience can actually tell you if you'd enjoy anything.

I don't think Aion will kill WoW and I'm not sure if anything will....

But, with the up and coming slew of MMOs hitting the shelves, I'm sure WoW will fell the hit as people scramble to play the newest and latest MMOs - like Aion and the Star Wars one....WoW will slump a little, but for those that need something "dumb" and "simple" to play, WoW will still be on top until it finally hits a point where people don't want to play an old, old game.

i've tried (the free trials of) a lot of mmos and i cant seem to get into them, apart from WoW and GW. someone mentioned it's a bit like GW so perhaps after i try a free trial of aion (if there is one) i might like it. who knows? and why do we all care about how well WoW is doing? because its killing the industry? have you lost friends and family to this plague? i dont know, if i can have fun in any one game why should i care about another?

I never really will understand the sort of "system wars" mentality when it comes to WoW vs. other MMO's.

Oh man, another "will take WoW's place" thread :|

All the better from a player's point of view. If Blizzard has competition they'll eventually force themselves to bring up something good to keep the playerbase, and everyone will gain from it.

I didn't even give Aion a try because I'm sick and tired of friggin kids who can't understand how their class is played and end up throwing random insults and making a fuss over their own mistakes, and a game built like Aion will be a real mess with these kids imo, but from the things we've heard it seems pretty neat (except the "character personalization" praises that are simply meaningless eyecandy). Still, I don't think it will "take WoW's place". iirc people was excited about AoC for the same reasons: neat combat, great graphics compared to WoW, massive world/battles/whatever, and we all know how it ended.

And, by no means it is "too smart" for hardcore WoW players, this statement is so utterly wrong that it means you have no first idea how high-end WoW was.

It has killed WoW in Korea however. Well, it put a major dent. k0r3aN_pR1d3

Who cares about Korea. Every korean will be playing SC2 as soon as it comes out so it only has one year and a handful months left before dying completely :D

Aion looks good but the reactions are mixed and not all positive as OP would like people to believe. Alot of people see Aion as nothing new or special. I will refrain from formulating a final opinion till I play it. All I can say right now is although it runs on a good engine and looks good graphically it completely fails in my eyes becouse it has no style. When you see it your first thought maybe oh its just another Korean mmo becouse all of them have the same old eastern style. WoWs graphics are outdated but atleast it sets itself apart from the mmo crowd with its colorful and stylised design.

[QUOTE="k0r3aN_pR1d3"]It has killed WoW in Korea however. Well, it put a major dent. Mograine

Who cares about Korea. Every korean will be playing SC2 as soon as it comes out so it only has one year and a handful months left before dying completely :D

No, we are rather talented in playing multiple games at once. You would be amazed if you strolled through one of our PC Bangs, seeing 40 year old men playing 5 different MMO's at once lol.

As much as i love Aion, WoW is too popular to be kicked off its throne by another MMO. only WoW itself can kick itself off that said throne. Plus, Blizzard had been very strategic with announcing updates and Expansions that really grab players. Now that Aion, one of the biggest known MMOs besides it that already has a fanbase is coming, what does Blizzard announce? a new expansion pack called Cataclysm which changes the whole dang game. If thats not a winning Ace, i don't know what is.

Lineage 2 is also killing WoW in South Korea.

Its no wow killer but its going to pull many a player bored with WoW away from WoW. It already has 2mil in preoders in the US alone and Asia has 7 million players.

I think you fail to remember that AOC had no longer term open to the public beta to let people get honest opinions about it. The one that was offered was small and limited. And it was getting bashed on well before release. Aion on the other hand is receiving praise AND ITS OUT IN ASIA and is doing well.

When will people realize that WoW is an oddity, a fluke, and that the subscriber-base for any other MMO will have to be happy with a few hundred thousand, maybe a million at best, players?

I don't really care. To be honest, I'm not ready to get another MMO. WoW was great while I played it, but I don't anymore, so I see no need to start fresh in a new, time consuming, game.

Im waiting to see how much in common Aion is compared to Lineage 2. If its going to be a WoW clone then, I might think about getting it.

The problem with WoW is that they are mainly using the story lines from the previous Warcrafts eg: burning crusade was based on Illidan and Draenor. Aion on the other hand will have no story to stick to so NEsoft may freely add things in as they wished.

Just remember its taken WoW 5 years to get to 11 million subscribers, and Aion already has 3-4 million without even being released in the US.
