I would just like to know who else thinks the same way as i do? When i play either FPS or RTS games i hate it when you have some really cool massive gun or something and instead of a huge BOOOM noise you get some stupid ZZZAAAPPP and some pink lazer comes out of your turret. Actually the whole concept of the future just seems boring to me when it comes to games, although some games of that type have taken my fancy in the past. Im not trying to prove a point here or anything,,, i would just like to know how many people feel the same way as me...... so dont go posting sarcastic offensive replies like so many people love doing.

It depends on the game. I do admit that most sci-fi settings are getting stale(but so are medieval fantasy and bloody World War II), but I wouldn't mind at all if the underlying game mechanics were well done. (In terms of sci-fi settings, I want a new space adventure game ala Starflight or Star Control, but I doubt that's going to happen in today's FPS-saturated market.)

What I want is a new, and very complex starship simulator. At least as close as you can get to one speculating on future technology.

Sounds like what the infamous Derek Smart of Battlecruiser/Universal Combat fame has been offering, though you'd probably want something with less bugs and a less confusing interface. In any case, I'm with you. My concept of a new space adventure game does involve heavy starship simulation elements...

I used to play Battlecruiser Gold, and Universal Combat very heavily, but with the recent updates to my machine, I'm wanting something that takes more of the power from my investment. I'm also not really happy about having to only get digital distributions, due to the fact that I wouldn't have a copy for myself specifically.

I'm all for the powerful "holy hell it sounded like I just shot a real shotgun" sounding weapons, but how can anyone not have love for a railgun or a shock rifle?

kind of - i think generalising is the worst thing you can do, though - i don't like most scifi/future games - or settings in general - unless it specifically relates to me or us in some way that i can feel for - to use television as an example, i find star trek tng, while great - very distant and hard to relate to... but firefly has a great deal of culture that appeals to me and a style i enjoy, even though it's a very futuristic setting - and even though those old western pistols go zzzap, i still love it

i also am madly in love with warhammer 40k - which is especially why i don't want to generalise onanti future stuff - but often, yeah - i'd rather play a present day story or something historical or fantasy than something futuristic... i think one of the biggest problems is that developers lose sight of the humanity of... humanity... when working on science fiction - everything is drawn in shades of grey

I'm the opposite, I am getting tired of WWII shooters and games based in the here and now. It irks me to no end that Civilization (all of 'em) ends with modern weapons and that's it

To me futuristic games are all about creativity. Unreal Tourney for instance is a lot more fun to me because you play on these worlds that don't really exist - they seem to come out of your imagination, you have weapons and vehicles that are over the top and when you blast someone with it you can almost feel it :) Maybe I just watched too many Wile E Coyote cartoons as a kid.

Well, i've always been a fan of sci-fi, so i don't mind it at all.But i do enjoy sci-fi if it's more grounded and less fantastical, y'know like Deus Ex or Starship Troopers or Mechwarrior or Star Wars, universes where the technology could actually, possibly, become reality someday.Firefly, that's another one.Cowboy Bebop, which Firefly was heavily influenced by, and ect.

Depends. HL2 is a great futuristic game because it doesn't just throw all logic out the window. But other stuff...meh.

Look up the Warhammer 40k universe..  its a Sci-fi on steroids with a side of fantasy as well (melee combat with swords, socery, daemons, psychic powers)..   It is by far the most unique and most indepth Sci-fi universe I have ever seen, while at the same time completely redifing human behavior and society to a point of flat out brutality which I usually never see.  In the end there is no choice of absolute good in the universe, only the choice to survive.

Personally, I can't stand realistic/historical games due to their dullness. A lot of games do do scifi rather poorly, though, but most don't. Half-Life 2 is a perfect example of scifi done properly.

Speaking of sci-fi/fantasy settings, I'm surprised no one brought up Shadowrun yet; it's a cyberpunk fantasy IP from FASA, the same group that brought us Battletech/MechWarrior. Due to its detail and depth, it would make a great open-ended RPG; not sure if any of the currently-released games based on it fit that category. (Oh, and let's try to ignore that team-based shooter disappointment the IP has been recently used for...)

A lot of the time when they make futuristic games they add the futuristic part as a selling point. Anymore Futuristic themed games have become so common that games need to be more complex to be "good". Its easy to do this with modern games as all the technologies and unexpected happenings are all known. But in the future we know nothing of these unexpected things that we'll have to deal with. For example: in modern games you can already know the names of the guns, clip size, armor, recoil and physical effects. But in a futuristic game we have to invent it all. Nobody knows how a 1000kW laser handgun will look like. We don't even know how to realistically represent one in a game. The thing that makes a game better is making it more detailed, complex and realistic. Although it does take on a more artistic aspect as we can make mythical vehicles that can hover over the ground or a railgun hand gun.

I think, if done right, futuristic setting can be a good thing. The problem with Doom 3, Quake 4, Prey, and all other games that is sci-fi/futuristic looking is that they overuse all the effects. Blade Runner and The Fifth Element are examples how futuristic elements should be handled... it has to be something we can related, while still convinces us that we are in the future.

Most of them are sucky, but for example, Deus Ex, and Planescape: Torment are my favoritest games of all! And I love Sci-Fi stories way more than Fantasy, 'cause they can often be so so so much deeper, but on the same token there's never any replacement for a wonderful story set in whatever fantasy, futuristic, or realistic setting you like that is just written awesomefully and it just great fun to read. (Too bad I can never find any good novels, though.. But game stories are almost always more enjoyable)

Personally it always depends on the game. Futuristic games will always be from the perspective of those who creat them, so it's hard to throw them all out. You have to ask what are you accomplishing (save the world, destroy the enemy, satisfy a mule?), what type of game is it (RTS, FPS, MMOPRG), and is it a purpose you think you can relate to (do you care?!?!). Personally I don't like Warhammer 40K, but I love all HL's, getting into BF2142 some, C&C 3 looks like it'll be a winner for the most part, but I still love BF 1942, even BF2 occasionally, CS:S, CoD's, and tons of other games, so it depends on what you want in a game. One game I hope they finish within the next 10 years is Star-Trek Online. I'm not a Treky, but Legacy sure gave me a nice swift kick to my...... wallet :D. I was hoping to finally have a good Starship game, but that sure didn't happen. A lot of companies keep coming out with games far too quickly, and not nearly enough testing done before release. Stronghold 2!!, RS:Vegas, just to name a few I've personally had issues with just like the rest of the gaming world. I'm getting to the point where I'm going to hold off on games until after oh lets say Patch 6 comes out for the game. It's amazing to see PC Game prices dropping too. I don't mind paying for quality, especially since all those $60 360 & PS3 games would look far better with my 8800 GTX 8)

Futuristic games aren't as boring as WW11 games, they were ok for a while, but now every second FPS and RTS is set in WW11. It's nice to get away from all that with a futuristic game.

lol it's because Doom 3, Quake 4 and Prey all use the same engine, they all have the same look to it. I hate it. But I love Unreal Tournament, Warhammer 40k and X3 Reunion, I dont particularly have a fetish for Sci Fi. I don't really care, I just like good games. Althought World War 2 is getting VERY VERY VERY repetitive, CoH was great though.

Totally, one hundred percent agree with you on this.  I absolutely LOVE real bullets, guns, killing humans, blood, metal casings and shells hitting the floor from REAL GUNS.....debris, chunks of wood, glass....etc.....

I HATE lazers, red beams, sci-fi futuristic robotic, kiddy, colorful, RAY GUN make believe zap zap crap in games.  Green mysterious ooze jetting out from big factories, and if YOU WALK THROUGH IT....GEE YOUR HEALTH GOES DOWN......ugh......Hate this stuff in games.

Realistic, and sim-like.....is what i like.

Apparently, I prefer that setting....

Metroid Prime (Gamecube), DOOM II (and Ultimate DOOM), Half-Life 2 (and HL), and System Shock II are among my all-time fav games.

exceptions are half life ... love the gravity gun babe :p

Future games are great.... lots of creativity and imagination (well, if its a GOOD future game)....

System Shock 2 and Deus Ex are 2 excellent games set in the future.

My hope is that when we have turrets in the future, that they aren't designed by women.  Pink lasers lol....

Bloodmist I fail to see why you keep trying to bash the universe when I refuted every point you had when we had this last argument. Not to mention the last argumetn we had showed how ignorant you were of the Warhamer 40k universe due to constantly spouting off stuff that weren't true what so ever...

Norse Mythology?  Is that the best you can do, the only thing close to Norse Mythology is the Space Wolf Chapter and that is one tiny part of the thousands of pieces that make up the Warhammer 40k universe.. Honestly why not try to read into the universe, read a novel based in it before you say really anything.. Because I honeslty think your misinformed..

Honestly the only reason I can see is to protect your Warcraft and Starcraft which ARE based off the Warhammer universes..

I enjoy sci-fi, but can't stand westerns and world war (The Great War and WWII) themed games, so I can understand your bias. Maybe it warrants its own thread. Something about the realism of those games and drawing from the atrocities that happened bothers me on a fundamental level.

I prefer to escape reality rather than replicate it.
