If you dissect the installation file from the Catalyst 15.3 driver as released last week then you will find some new entries, all AMD Radeon Rx 300. There's good and bad news though.

The bad news is that most cards seem to be respin products, meaning an older GPU being reused onto a new PCB and BIOS, often with subtle clock frequency differences. If you couple the device ID's to previous generation products then you will see that older GPUs are in use for the following products up-to R9 370.

That means AMD Radeon R9 370 would be Trinidad (=Pitcairn) aka Radeon HD 7870 and 265/270/270X. The AMD Radeon R9 360: Tobago would be Bonaire with 896 shader processors. And then AMD Radeon R7 350X, R7 340 and R5 340X would use Oland with its 384 stream processors.

Missing entries are the AMD Radeon R9 380 and R9 390. Now if you allow me to speculate for a moment, given all these re-spins logic would dictate that the 380 could very well be a spin of Hawaii (290/290x). But again that is speculation.

If that is the case then the only new GPU would become the R9 390/390X series.

AMD Radeon Rx 300 series are just around the corner. The newest Catalyst driver finally tells us more about the next ‘generation’ of Radeon products.

Like always, there are some good and some bad news. The good news is that we finally have DeviceID confirmation for some of these cards. The bad news is that most of them are rebrands.

Just remember we’re interpreting this data our own way, you can download this driver yourself and compare DeviceID with older products. Here’s our conclusion.

AMD Radeon R9 370: Trinidad (Pitcairn)

Not that long ago we told that Radeon R9 370 is based on Trinidad GPU. What we didn’t know however, is that Pitcairn is Curacao (and Curacao is Pitcairn). You can learn this by checking Device ID from the newest driver (it says AMD6811). Assuming that’s all true, and there’s every reason to believe it is, then Pitcairn will start arrive with Radeon series for the fourth time. Pitcairn was launched in 2012 with Radeon HD 7870. A year later Pitcarin was renamed to Curacao and launched as HD 8860. Ten months later Curacao arrived as Radeon R9 270(X). What is hard to understand is that AMD is still keeping Curacao in x70 series, 18 months after R9 270… Yet again, it’s not even R9 270X to R9 370 rebranding, but R9 270 to 370.

AMD Radeon R9 360: Tobago (Bonaire)

The R9 360 was also added to the drivers. DeviceID states 665F, which is a family of Bonaire products. What it means that Bonaire will return once again with 896 stream cores on board. The rumor is AMD will rename Bonaire to Tobago, just to confuse you even more.

AMD Radeon R7 350X, R7 340 and R5 340X: Oland

Oland will return with Radeon R5 and R7 300 series. It’s an entry-level GPU with 384 stream cores. It’s available with GDDR5 and DDR3 memory. There is a good reason to believe these cards will not be sold in retail channel.

AMD Radeon R5 310: Caicos

Radeon R5 310 is a rebrand of Radeon 7470, 8470 or R5 235 based on Caicos. This GPU has 19 times less cores than TITAN X, so unless AMD is planning 20-way CrossFire you may need to look for other options.

The rebrands will not only be exclusive to desktop series. Mobile Radeon graphics cards will heavily depend on previous series. Here’s the list from Baidu, which is using desktop names for GPUs (for clarity).

Seriously AMD? You've been steadily losing market share to Nvidia's new architecture and your belated answer is... a bunch of rebrands? And even worse it looks like 7870 = 270 = 370.

They are refresh with a few tweaks, right?

Not impressed. I'll wait for Pascal.

Lame, so much for waiting for AMD to shake things up.

I already pretty much expected this. The actual new card(s) will be R9 390(X).

I do find it strange that the 270 would be rebranded as the 370 instead of 360. Only time I can recall AMD has done something similar for the lower-mid range was the 5770 to 6770, and only then because they added a new tier to the 6000 series. And the 380(x) 290(x) rebrand seems inappropriate due to the latter's gargantuan power consumption and heat output. Really do hope this was in error or being misinterpreted, we'll know for sure in a few weeks.

I am not sure but it doesn't say anything for R9 370X.

So maybe we will have these:

R9 370X: R9 285

R9 380: TongaXT (aka full R9 285)

R9 380X: something between/or R9 290 and R9 290X (maybe R9 290 with higher clocks which will allow AMD to have better profits from lower yields)

R9 390 and R9 390X: new GPUs.

For me, it is difficult to answer

Maybe they will run hotter and consume more power now! :P

That's what I got from that. That and don't bother being excited for anything that isn't the top two cards.
