Depends on the budget i have to work with, at the moment i'ld go for an AMD X2 then unlock it to a quad.markop2003I was actually thinking of going with a phenom X2 550 and heard you could unlock the cores. What motherboard do you need to do this and also is there a significant impact on temperature after doing it?
I go with Intel because for the life of me I can't understand AMD's CPU numbering scheme. I can't tell which are the better models VS. which are the older models.gamer082009I actually find that Intel's numbering scheme makes less sense than the AMD.

What motherboard do you need to do this and also is there a significant impact on temperature after doing it? Keep in mind that the cores may not be stable when unlocked, considering they generally use CPU's that didn't succeed some tests on those cores. Don't rely on the fact that you can unlock 2 cores, but rather just think of it as an added bonus if it works.[QUOTE="markop2003"]Depends on the budget i have to work with, at the moment i'ld go for an AMD X2 then unlock it to a quad.October_Tide

Mmm damn what a pain, was hoping it would be a pretty simple process and wouldn't have to worry too much. Though it still performs pretty well stock, not sure if I should perhaps go with the core 2 e7500 instead (or another core 2 for a similar price).[QUOTE="markop2003"]Depends on the budget i have to work with, at the moment i'ld go for an AMD X2 then unlock it to a quad.Luminouslight

Why? A x2 550 performs better than a e7500, can possibly turn into a x4 955, yet you opt to go for the latter?

Well they do seem to perform the same http://www.anandtech.com/bench/default.aspx?p=87&p2=97 though that being said it would make sense to get the 550 if performs the same since it is cheaper.
I'd go with Intel, better for everything else when I am not gaming, it all helps with load times etc etc. I recommend AMD for peeps who are broke(im poor too mkay), but decides to make a pure gaming box.

I have the x2 550 BE great processor. Right now though there is only a $10 difference between teh X2 550 and the x3 720BE though. If I were you I'd get the 720BE. Not that the 550BE isn't good its just for $10 more you get one more core. Not only that usually the 720be has higher chances of unlocking to all 4 I think. (I couldn't unlock my 550be but it's still great)which ever has better price performance which is amd at the moment, but if they were both the same I'd pick amd since intel has such a terrible heatsink install system compared to amd. imprezawrx500WOW, you pick a CPU because you can't install a heatsink? LOL It really is not that hard.

At the moment, if I were to build a pc, and I was on a budget, I would go AMD. If I wasn't on a budget, I would go intel.
