about a month or two ago i brought to you news of the demise of the amd controller hd 7990 and the start of the 7970x2. today i got more on it the hd 7970x2 has become the 7990 and has taken voer the canned dual-gpu's place in the lineup. card makers already have samples ready and will likely be ready for a paper and store launch in the 2nd half of july.

we also now no amd's secret weapon.. ram marketing theoretically an amd card maker could make a limited edition with TWELVE Gigabytes OF VRAM yes you heard me 12gb with base units starting off near the 6gb area.

So 2x6GB? That's pretty beast. Great for anyone who wants to run stupidly high resolutions.

That can't be correct. 2 GPUs with 3gb each still = 3gb.

You are now aware that whether the card treats the 2x3GB as 3GB or not there is still actually 6GB there and it is technically accurate to call it as such also it

hahah you are so illogical. Nobody calls dual gpu cards by the total ram in both cards, the card only has 3/6gb avalible to use, shows how little morons on this site know. Go on tomshardware forums and see how long you last with your idiotic logic there.

whoa....lol I'm actually now surprised by the amount of nubs myself... Dual chip cards still use same amount as ram of the single card counterpart, 690 only uses 2gb of ram regardless of the 4gb you see on the box. Why do you think xfire and sli get the same results as the dual chip? Sheesh...

Just like Im sure that news outlet knows what their saying. 12gb total as the box would likely say, 6gb each/usable. All those dual gpu always market off their cards as total ram to sell just like 600hz for plasma.

@other poster if you like tomshardware so much than stay there. Cause I guess theres no nubs or clowns there *sarcasm*.

AMD's OpenCL 1.2 says Hi. The little moron is you. The programmer can partition of the algorithm to multiple parallel compute kernels.

Large VRAM is mainly for server/workstation GpGPU compute devices. Duplicated textures was due to the compute model employed by the traditional raster titles.

From AMD's 6990 slide, the two 6970s's 2GB forms 4GB.

AMD focuses on GpGPU for GCN

AMD GCN's X86-64 changes the way the GPU access the main memory address i.e. AMD GCN is like another X86-64 CPU(without X86 legacy) sitting on the PCI-E bus.

98% of us here are aware that you only get the effective memory buffer of one of the GPUs. However, from what I've seen cards like this are usually still labeled with the total amount of VRAM. That goes back to the 7950 gx2, etc.. Even your beloved Tom's Hardware refers to dual-GPU cards this way.

This thread went to sh!t fast.

Anyways, that's cool - I'll be looking out for the 7990. I hope it gets priced more reasonably than the 690.

I covered all bases i.e. AMD's VRAM size with dual GPU on a single card context and AMD's consumer electronics(CE) GpGPU setup.

I do wonder... Why complain about the amount of VRAM as long as it has enough? Rather have to much than to little.

If you're going to get that amount of VRAM, I'm assuming you'll need to buy 2 or more monitors as well to justify the purchase of the card itself.

Also, whoever first mentioned Tom's Hardware needs to find a better tech hardware site.

It's just an uncertificated FireGL/FireStream card. It's an excellent card for very large voxel data rendering.

Luckily regular 2-card Crossfire for the 4870s was pretty good (still using it). A bit slow to support some games, but never anything game breaking or inherently broken. Just wish the 1GB versions were out when I purchased. 512MB VRAM is killing me.

Why not? Competition is good for everyone. We all win. Unless you've sworn allegiance to a particular product. Then you may lose.

God damn I need myself a 6GB card. BF3 on ultra 1080p uses 1.9GB+ VRAM. :oC_Rule
Wow! I plan on upgrading here shortly . I have 2 IceQ6870s in crossfire, which only have 1gb of vram each. I'd like to go with a 6970 2gb version, then eventually crossfire them, or just go all out and get a 7xxx series with 3gb. I'm not sure I'll be getting one of these 6gb or higher cards, probably a little outta my price range. Unless a find a pot of gold, or get raped by Kobe Bryant.lol

2 6870s should last a long time, you'd have to spend a very large amount to get a significant upgrade.

The VRAM will limit him if he goes for higher res.

I play at 1080p with 896mb and most games run fine. BF3 and GTA4 are the only games that over 1GB makes a large difference.

Play more demanding games that go over 1GB easily maxed out.>.>

Would 2 6970(2gb) be almost as effiecient as 2 7870s? As far as running on a slightly higher monitor than 1080p?
