i am about to upgrade my ram, to go with my new graphics card, and i have the choice of going with 2 gigs of ram or three gigs, im filling in the last two slots on my mobo. one more gig cost 50 bucks and leaves me with some money for another harddrive later, or an aditional 3 gigs costs 83 which is almost my full budget. i am just wondering if two gigs is enough for a long time(say a year). and yes like everyone else in this forum. i need it to be able to run crysis on megagho;sdfaidjfoia ultra high, or just to not bottle neck anything. thanks

I also think 3GB doesnt give you the advantage of dual-channel performance. To get that, you need matching pairs of RAM.

No you can, 2x 512, in dual channel, and 1x1 gig in the other slot.

For applications it could be useful, for gaming it's not really needed unless possibly for Vista + gaming.

2GB is enough and it will be that way for a long time. You really don't need more than 2GB if you are using Vista.

Yeh 3GB is best for Vista ... i'd go for 800 just cause it's faster if you want to overclock your CPU

It's always nice to have more RAM, you usually get a performance boost.

so that wont result in proformance drops from say a 2 gig kit(2 one gig sticks) and a one gig kit(2 512 sticks)?

Yeh that'd be fine ... although to be honest dual channel dosen't do much in the way of real performance, well not in games anyway

If you have 4 slots you could do 1GB x 1GB & 512MB x 512MB.

Personally I think that's limiting and in the future that 512MB x 512MB is going to be a waste. I also don't like using all 4 slots of memory, I'd rather just have 2 filled up. If you really want 3GB then get 2 - 2GB sticks :)

I know not every version (mostly desktop) of Windows can access the full 4GB, but it's close and I don't think the cost is that much different between 3 & 4 GB. The only disadvantage is most 2GB sticks aren't quite up to the speed of 1GB sticks which can be a problem if you are overclocking.

is a 2 gig kit and a one gig stick of this ram good enough for what i need. in other words, is the quality good enough. also the cheapest 2 gig stick i could find was 91 bucks, so a little expensive seeing as i can only spend up to about 150.

In the near future, 3GB that you can run both game and some application together. Sometime it's benefit.
