Here are some I would recommend you

  • Vampires of the Masquerade
  • Arcanum
  • Fallout 1+2
  • Temple of Elemental Evil
  • Neverwinter Nights 2
  • Deus Ex
  • Titan Quest
  • Mount and Blade: Warband
  • Planescape Torment
  • Ultima 4, 5, 7
  • DoomRL
  • NetHack
  • Star Control 2
  • Daggerfall
  • Eschalon Book 1+2
  • Risen
  • Gothic 1-3. 3 is good if you mod it. I am currently pretending Gothic 4 does not exist.
  • System Shock 2
  • Recettear

The Witcher 2 s a must. :)

You should give Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines a try.

You could also try Mount & Blade ( i recommend getting Warband ).

You could try Fable III. As soon as it came out on PC i picked it up. I had a blast! Finished my second playthrough today.

Dungeon Siege (1-2), Sacred. Both are hack'n'slash RPGs, DS is in 3D, but I think Sacred is much better since it implements more of good ideas. You mentioned only Diablo 2, I think the first episode is also an enjoyable one. System Shock and Deus Ex would better fit another genre, but they also build heavily on RPG elements. Sims Medieval is one fresh title, and altough it's far from normal RPGs, I liked that you can choose casts like Blacksmith and Troubadour. Of course the game is only interesting until the time you explore everything, but I liked this new wrapping of the traditional RPG context-elements. Some episodes of Final Fantasy (I know about 7 and 8) have been ported to PC, in case JRPGs don't give you the creeps. Older titles like Elder's Scrolls 1-2, Might&Magic, Wizardy, Ultima etc... require this retro-geek attitude to cause some fun, and they also need require DOS environment (they're good games, it's just their graphics won't make your chin fall).

Anything by Spiderweb Software. Some of my favorites... EVER. And the RPG is my favorite genre by a long shot.

The Geneforge series, Avernum series, and Avadon: The Black Fortress. All masterpieces.
