Any point in overclocking an I7 920?

So far I've tried clockspeeds up to 3.6 GHz and coupled with a GTX285 there seems to be next to no fps gains in any game I've played.

So am I correct in assuming that an I7 920 running at stock speeds does not bottleneck a GTX285 whatsoever?

Would it make more sense with a 5870?

For gaming?

Nope..not much point in overclocking for that. Mine's currently at stock. I only kick up the frequencies when I anticipate doing a large amount of music/video transcoding for my D2+, though I tend to leave it there when I'm too lazy to change it back.

Even with the bottleneck lifted from your GPU, there'd still be absolutely no point in overclocking. Performance would already be so good with a stock 920 that you'd see no discernable benefit from overclocking and gaining a few more frames per second. It's just e-peen stroking at that point.

You tried different resoltuion? RTS games? To me it's pointless to spend so much money and NOT Overclock 8)

Some games gain fps with an overclock while some don't. When I played Empire: TW I did get a fps increase over stock.

I play at 1920*1080 which is max for my 22" monitor. There's about 2 fps to gain at best (and this is Crysis).

The reason for this post is that overclocking seems downright pointless so far. It does'nt allow me to boost any settings in any games that I now of. Thats's my exerience using a GTX285 and anywhere between the stock 2.66 and 3.6 GHz.

The truth is a C2Q and a Phenom II at about 3.2Ghz are enough for all games today, try getting a better video card and hope it makes a difference..............

At stock speeds at resolutions of 1920x1200 and higher the i7 IS a bottleneck for the HD 5870 and 5970 cards.

no point overclocking any modern quad core for gaming when the bottle neck is on the gpu. but for video or rendering there is point as the faster the clock speed the faster something will render.

WTH, do you know what your are talking about?

At 1920x1080 and higher EVEN the i7 975 is a bottleneck for the HD 5870 and 5970.

The CPU just can't calculate fast enough for the video cards to get higher FPS.

Well tbh I think overclocking is a great way to increase minimum and average frame rates, and it helps in games in the way that it processes data faster/more data from the GPU. Overclocking has its other benefits including video encoding, photoshop, other cpu heavy tasks.

IF you buy an i7 920 and do not OC it, then your not really giving it what it deserves it's a sure fire investment, just think when the next 1-2 generations of Intel CPU's come out, you won't have an obsolete CPU if it's OC'd @ 3.6-4.0 Ghz because it will hold it's own a lot longer than say my CPU in the next 3 yrs.

I have noticed huge performance increase in crysis when i overclocked my CPU. Especially when i got my second card.

My shader performance jumped a good bit @ 4.7GHz over 4.2GHz. So even a C2D at 4.2GHz is a bottleneck if you're maxing out modern GPU's...

what about for rendering man? like how much of a decrease in times would i get on a normally 30 minute render if i bumped mine up to 3.0 or 3.2?

So having your i7 overclocked isn't a good idea? when you need that extra horsepower from your CPU when newer GPU's and games come out that require extra cpu speed for data transfer and higher minimum frame rates/physics?
