iIve heard Universe at war: Earth Assult is good, Sins of a Solar Empire looks AWSOME! Masters of Orion got good reviews, but its 16 years old.
In addition to the above mentioned Supreme Commander Complete, I'd like to toss these into the mix:
Oh, and if you want a solid single-player campaign, stay as far away from Sins of a Solar Empire. Sins has no single player campaign at all. However, if you don't mind single-player skirmishes against the AI, I'd whole-heartedly recommend Sins provided that you pick up the expansion pack (Entrenchment) as well.

Try World in Conflict. It has a great tutorial mode, plus it removes the tedious stuff out of the game, such as resource-gathering and base-building.
