I bought the game on the Steam sale. My specs:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bits

Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.8GHz

4GB RAM DDR2

GeForce GTX 460 SE 1024MB -> 1600x900 resolution

The game runs like crap! I tried changing some settings and... still runs like crap (and the graphics are REALLY bad)!

Any tips?

Weird even an 8800GT on a full patched GTA IV could pull 30 frames at 1680x1050 with everything on high, except shadows on medium, car density 54, draw distance 30, detail distance 24, it's even easier on EFLC, 460 should have no problems at all, if you're not using mods patch it to the latest version (if you didn't already) and lower the draw distance.

Turn the settings down.

The game looks as good as ( if not better ) than the console version on the lowest settings especially with the EFLC patch that fixes those ugly shadows.

get a 6-8 threads I7/I5 middle-high end new CPUs. Sorry, that's the only way to play GTVIV above average 20fps, regardless what GPU you have.

I bought it during the sale as well and haven't had major issues so far; however, I haven't played very long either. I've ranged from 40-50 with everything on high. I kept the numbers values as default as I wasn't sure how much impact it would be if maxed.

Downgrade to patch 1.04.0 and it shuld run much smoother and you shouldnt have that stuttering. Although I dont know if graphics wise its any worse.

You don't know much about the Q6600 then.

Best thing to do is just uninstall it. The game isn't worth the frustration.

Sure it doesn't, why would anyone want to play the best game of this kind, right?

Actually, only on PC it's worth it...played it on 360 also, it's worse than on a mediocre PC, performance, and the graphics are terrible, everything is washed. It would suck if I'd be this frustrated over a fantastic game, just because I actually had to juggle the settings when I had the mediocre 8800GT, that performed more than great, oh well, sucks for you guys.

You don't know much about the Q6600 then.

Q6600 is 4 threads quad cores, and it's not the best CPU for GTAIV either let along the mods, a 6 threads middle+ CPU is a must if you want a full experience.

sorry, unless you can max out GTAIV, or console version is the way to go, PC did add some interesting extra visual tricks such as better trees, night shadow and options to add busy traffic, but those are for high end users, and 360 version GTAIV is nothing like you described. I don't know why, PC vanilla version got rid of console version's motion blur distanced object aren't in DOF either.

My copy of GTA4 ran much better after using the ICEnhancer mod, something that is visually impossible on a console, making the pc version that much more stunning. All the other mods I used were great additions as well. I'm sure that the people bashing the pc version are just not capable of modding a game or just try to run it on too weak of a pc.

I could get 62fps on the benchmark with a Phenom II 940 and a GTX 580.

So... there is no way?

What are the most demanding graphic settings so I can turn them down?

Try putting it all on medium with the detail distance at 100 and the draw distance at 1. Or is it the other way around?

Honestly just turn down Shadows and Night Shadows, you will see a huge improvement in frame rate.

My brother's last PC nailed a 60 fps in benchmark with a 8800GT and getting 15-30ish in later gameplay. night time no traffic with 4 guys on motorcycles aren't exactly a good way to test performance on a big sandbox game such as GTAIV.

I have a 955 and it runs above 30 fps almost all the time. The game is terribly optimized, but it's definitely playable.

Also, you NEED at least 1.5 gigs of VRAM.

The game had some performance issues right from the beginning.
