Unfortunately for me, I already own all the great titles selling for $5 on this week's D2D sale - but this Elven Legacy thing is something that I know nothing about.

Somebody in another thread here wrote that Eleven Legacy is reminiscent of the Panzer General games. That caught my attention. I loved the Panzer General games. Is there anything I should know about before I slap down my hard-earned five dollars? LOL!

It's not a rpg. It's a turn based strategy game with some hero customization. Try the demo, it's seems to be a love or hate game. personally, I really liked it.

I bought Elven Legacy in the hopes that it will play like Panzer General. It was only five dollars, so I decided why not. So that's Riddick for five bucks, and now this for five bucks.

I also bought Bioshock for five dollars, since my DVD was scratched and I was unable to re-install it. I've still only made it to the halfway point in Bioshock, but maybe this time I'll actually finish it. (I replayed the first twenty minutes, and I'd forgotten how good the game is... I wonder why I stopped playing?)

The problem is that right now I'm playing Batman, which I just bought last week - and that game demands to be finished. And not just finished, but to be savored. None of this is to mention that I've barely even begun Dead Space and Call Of Juarez: Bound in Blood. I mean, this is just ridiculous how many titles I've bought in the past month.

The Majesty 2 demo has been calling me too, and I'm trying so hard to resist... must... not... buy... Majesty 2.

Hold off on Majesty 2 Charles, just trust me on that. Once some user created maps get released then it'll be a sure buy but for now there just aren't enough missions to keep you entertained for more then a day or two, just hold off especially if you have quite a few other games on your plate. As for Elven Legacy, I gave the demo a try and it seemed interesting so I went and picked it up for $5 as well. As Franko said it seems like it's a love or hate game, so you'll either love it or hate it. But for $5 meh, I won't complain if it's the hate.

Elven Legacy is pretty good, but it would be better to grab the first game in the series, Fantasy Wars as it's got better missions and 3 campaigns with 3 different races rather than the single one offered up in EL.

Oh great.

Elven Legacy plays exactly like Panzer General - except it's modern looking, and takes place in a fantasy setting. There goes what little social life I had left. I just know that I'm going to spend this fall and this winter playing this game. I've got the old Panzer General feeling back in my bones again, after more than a ten year absence.

If I had known about this game I would've bought it.

But then, I'm glad I didn't know about it, becasue it only cost me five dollars. This and Riddick and Bioshock - all for five dollars each. Man, I raped them.

Hey, what the?

Was this game developed by the same group of guys who developed the other title I've got my eye on - specificaly, Majesty 2? What do we know about this company, other than the fact that they seem to be making games that get my mojo going?

I'm glad to see that Eleven Legacy is selling well in the D2D sale. (It's sixth on the chart.)

This is a very good game. It's not just a little bit like Panzer General - it is exactly like Panzer General. I bought every Panzer General game ever made, and was really sad to see the series decline, and eventually fade away. Elven Legacy has updated the interface and the graphics, and brought the Panzer General gameplay into the modern era. Of all the games on my shelf right now, I just know that I'm going to spend the winter playing this one.

I'm kind of surprised that I hadn't heard about this game earlier - because this would've been a day one purchase for me. I guess the problem here is that it was made by a small company that just didn't have the funds to promote its own game.

I'd say to anybody, buy this game for five dollars. I highly recommend it.

I posted about how much I was enjoying Fantasy Wars and (to a much lesser extent) Elven Legacy when they were first released on Gamersgate.

None of my threads got much in the way of responses though. No surprise there.

Really? Wow, that's a shame.

Because this game is just so rewarding. Like, Panzer General, just moving the units into place in the right manner, is just so much fun.

You might sit there looking at a unit that's in a town. You have to take that unit out, but it's behind walls, so you need to take it out with a specialized unit that's made for city attacks. But the unit in the town is surrounded by friendlies so you have to take those out first. Maybe the toughest unit of the bunch has archer support, so then you have to take the archers out before you attack that tough unit. Meanwhile, you only have so many turns to take out the town behind the town you're presently focused on, so already you're moving cavalry units into place in attempt to soften up the rear areas.

Just a wonderfully rewarding game when it all fits into place.

Nice looking game too. About eight or nine years ago I installed Panzer General on and old computer, because I really missed playing it - but it just didn't feel right. It was antiquated. This game is modern. It just feels right.

It was me that mentioned the Panzer General comparison in the other thread. I also came accross it quite by accident some time back (weekend, bored and decided to take a chance on the game while browsing around on steam). I don't know Fantasy Wars though, I'm going to have to keep my eyes out for that one. Thanks for the tip bogaty.

Fantasy General

Absolutely yes. When I said Panzer General, I meant the Panzer General series as a whole, because all the General games had the same gameplay mechanic. But yes, of course Elven Legacy is really an updated, modern version of Fantasy General. For me, it is a great gift this game, and I'm almost embarrassed that I didn't know about it. Even after I bought, and as I was downloading it, I still didn't quite realize what it was that I had just bought.

Oh, you're the guy who said it was like Panzer General. Well thanks for that, Mazoch. I might not have bought it otherwise. I hear that the developer is actually working on an expansion for this. Count me down for that. I hope that they sell a few more copies through this D2D sale, because like Drakensang, this is an under-rated title.

Well then grab the first title in the series, Fantasy Wars. It's $19.99 on Gamersgate. I enjoyed it more (mostly because I hate elves) as there are 3 campaigns, Human, Orc, and Dwarf/Elf and I found the mission maps to be more challenging and offer more tactical variety than Elven Legacy (I know a lot of people complained about the difficulty level of Fantasy General, so the devs toned down the challenge for Elven Legacy.)

Bogaty, I just bought the first game in the series, Fantasy Wars, off E-bay - so thanks for the heads up. (I paid $15 for a new copy - that's funny, because Elven Legacy, the sequel, which was released just this year, cost me only $5 because of the sale. I'm so happy I found out about both of these titles.)

Everyone else, the D2D sale of Elven Legacy for $5 continues, and I urge anybody who is even remotely interested in turn-based strategy to pick this up. It's a wonderful, wonderful game that will have you playing for hours and hours each night.

This, and Batman are ruling me right now.

Oh wow, I just thought of somethng.

The D2D sale on Monday is going to be for war-games. Fantasy Wars is presently selling for $30 at D2D. I'll bet that on Monday Fantasy Wars goes on sale for $5. Oh well, I wouldn't mind having the hard copy anyhow, I guess.

If I had thought of that earlier though I would've held off. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I don't think the guys at D2D are exactly grognards. I expect their idea of "wargames" will consist of stuff like World in Conflict, Brothers in Arms, and C&C3.

How did I miss this game - I just can't believe I missed this.

Fantasy Wars is on its way in the mail, and it's a good thing because I'll be done with this campaign in no time at all. I can't wait to see the expansion for Elven Legacy - it has something to do with rangers.

This thread convinced me to pick up Elven Legacy as well. I'm excited to try it but I got a little carried away in this D2D sale so it may not be for a while. Elven Legacy was game number 10 I purchased from them.

EDIT: Also, next week is indie week, not war games week.

Elven Legacy won't be outdated easily, so you can still play it next summer if you want to, or even later. So why not buy it now for five dollars?

Did you ever play the Panzer General games? It's all about combined arms. You just have to learn to move your pieces properly. Tanks (in this case, mounted knights) move in first and soften up rear areas, artillery units (archers) provide suppressing fire in a defensive capacity or take out rear units from afar, while infantry units (guys with halberds or axes or swords) go in to do the the grunt work or to mop up.

There are also hero units that have special powers - magicians for example, who can cast powerful spells once per turn. You just have to know what the units are for, and how they work, and then you begin to move your entire army forward.

It's a beautiful game that makes you want to play just one more turn. The really special thing about Elven Legacy is that there actually is a narrative. You're chasing an evil person across the map, and the hero units, every now and then, will actually stop and talk to each other. Sometimes they'll even issue side-quests. One of them might say, for example, that he knows of some horsemen over in that town over there who are being held hostage, so if you go over and rescue them they'll join your army afterwards.

It's a pretty awesome game.

Great game, got it on D2D special. It's strategically very interesting and challenging. My only grip on it is that it's short and has no ''sandbox'' sort of maps where you can pick a race and play.

Other than this small issue, it's a great game and totally worth the 5 bucks. I will be looking for the expansion when it comes out.

Never played Panzer General games, but I've played similar games for sure and always liked the style. This will likely be the game I play next if not only because I'm all RPG'd and FPS'd out and I'd like a game that I can just sit back, relax, and enjoy

Don't oversell it. It does have flaws. There's not much replay value to it once you've beaten it. You did the same thing with Drakensang and launched into raputrous praise when you first got into it, only to retract some of the more excessive adulation you heaped upon it later.

Maybe take some time to finish the game before giving it "smurfiest game ever!" awards?

I played the demo to Elven legacy. I found it boring myself, just not my cup of tea. It seemed like a game that would need a pretty deep tutorial to get me used to it.

Bogaty, I wasn't 'over-selling' Elven Legacy.

It's on sale for $5, which is a great deal, especially in this economy. I was just trying to alert people about the quality of this title (BUY ELVEN LEGACY NOW!). When I saw this title on sale, initially I didn't even think anything about it. I can only assume that others just looked at it and dismissed it right away also. (BUY ELVEN LEGACY NOW!)

As far as Drakensang is concerned - well, honestly, if anything, I was under-rating it. I spent pretty much the entire summer playing Drakensang. For me it was a good 60 hours in length (and, yes, I play slowly). I bought a brand new PC just to be ready for NWN 2, back in the day, and I loved that game - there were times while playing Drakensang during which I honestly questioned whether or not Drakensang was a better RPG. (BUY ELVEN LEGACY NOW!) For five dollars, Drakensang is a steal.

I stand by my comments about both titles. And I don't think I was over-selling either one of them. (BUY ELVEN LEGACY NOW!)

People around here get passionate about their games, which is the reason that 2 years afterwards we're still having to read all these damned 'Is Crysis The Greatest Game Ever' threads. I can assure you, however, that two years from now, I won't be posting about Drakensang. :)

Anyhow, I kind of do resent being called a Smurf, as though I'm deliberately attempting to trick people into buying Elven Legacy. (BUY ELVEN LEGACY NOW!) But again, thanks for the heads-up about Fantasy Wars. I can't wait for it to arrive in the post. (BUY ELVEN LEGACY NOW!)

No thanks. Steam had a Paradox Interactive Weekend Deal a couple of months ago... I chose Knights of Honor and EU: Rome over Elven Legacy.

btw - I own most of the Panzer General series. Good times. :)

Yes, it's a great deal for $5. (wish I'd waited on it and Drakensang). I'm just saying that I recall your over-the-top initial endorsement of Drakensang followed by later posts when the initial glow had worn off and you realized that there were issues with the game. Elven Legacy is good, but it's nowhere near as good as you're posts might lead people to believe.

Hmm, I might have to search my own posts, because I don't recall taking back any comments about Drakensang? I might've said that Drakensang wasn't quite as good as Neverwinter Nights - and I would stand by the statement now - but that's a far cry from withdrawing my comments.

Drakensang's still the sleeper hit of the year for me.

Also, I spent another 4 hours this afternoon on Elven Legacy. Anybody who likes the Panzer General games is going to LOVE Elven Legacy. That's all I'm saying. But yeah, I'll be the first to admit I can get pretty excited about gaming.

It's a trilogy now.
