For mmos, i mean. Its the main reason why i wont be getting SWTOR (other than the $60 price tag)

Its simply because i already purchased a game, i mean i find it incredibly stupid to have to pay another $15 a month just to PLAY it.....

This is why i really want to get Guild wars 2, no monthly payments.

How about you?

The "double-dipping" some games require is a bit perturbing, but thankfully it's quite rare. I don't mind paying a monthly fee, but the need to charge for a box on top of it is an outdated business strategy. My $.02 anyway.

I don't want to spend 250$ yearly on WoW, even if I do LOVE the game, so I'm content with private servers. ARR

they need them or they would lose money hosting the game and creating content and hiring people to do that and be game admins too

Considering the games $15 can get you on a good sales month...$15 to continue to play the same time-sink game every month always seems like a waste of money to me.

The 15 dollars you pay monthly goes to maintaining the servers, customer support and updates. A positive side effect includes an idiot filter (of course, how effective it actually is is up for debate).

An mmo, despite its monthly fee has saved me some money. Though, I feel 15 dollars a month isnt exactly necessary anymore.

Do you know how much it costs to run a mmo and keep adding things? A good amount of money.

Dont like paying? Then dont pay or play the ones that cost money.

I dont like many mmos but there is two that I have had no issue paying each month (Ultima Online and SWTOR).

Follow this logic:

play one game (World of Warcraft) for one month for 13€

play three games (Bioshock, Skyrim, GTA) for one month for 100€

The business of charging 50-60 for a game then charging monthly to play it is outdated and will cease to exist in the near future. Its all going to be games like ABP reloaded where its free to download but they micro manage, selling you all the stuff inside the game. But Guild wars is the best way in my opinion, charge normal fee for the game then no micro stuff or monthly fees but they release an addon once in awhile.

I've played alot of mmos but i'm completely done with the monthly stuff and waiting for a good game like Guild wars 2.

You have to fully understand how the system is implemented to see why it is $15 a month. It makes sense because they have a new patch every week, will keep adding on and creating stuff for the players who all play together and more. If it didn't have a monthly fee it would not have much support and all the added things would not exist.

I've got some links and references to quotes from posts of mine a year or two ago, but Arenanet said that what they did with GW1 + pricing + expansions wasn't really working for them and they'd have to change it up with GW2. They DID note that they're still definitely not going to charge any monthly fees though, and I think they implied no microtransactions either.

I agree the least they could do is add 3 months along with the initial payment of the game, sure you get 30 days but how is anyone going to say they got their money's worth for a month of gaming then having to pay more. That's the only thing stopping me buying the game, it's like the 360 you pay for the console, pay for the game then have to pay further to play the good bits.

Yeah, I understand they need to maintain servers, but at this point everybody's trying to make a cash grab and it's getting annoying. Fortunately most of those games like wow and swtor are really, really boring and focus on addictive grinding gameplay rather than fun gameplay, so I'm mostly immune to their schemes.

I have played it. It's got several mediocre character story lines, then you max level and it's time to grind. It's like a single player rpg with a chat box until you tear through the 100 million dollars of voice acting. On top of that, combat is clicking a bad guy and watching your jedi beat the air with his lightsaber until somebody dies. I can't believe people are actually paying monthly fees for that.

Greed companies like EA, yes. Honestly paying for a game ($60) is expensive enough. Most people have bills to pay and adding $15 to those bills just to play a game you have already payed for is going to sound stupid to anyone outside of the MMO world. I like to buy a game and be able to play it whenever I want without having to worry about a subscription. Mabey there could be a subscription for like a premium membership or something, though.

I understand why they do it and millions will pay for it. But its hard to justify spending 60 dollars on a game then having to shell out 15 dollars a month to keep playing my game when many other games can give me a ton of play time.

Only MMOs give you a ton of play time, tons actually, but I do agree with the price, it seems only developers that know their MMO will fail do it, the latest example being Rift, SWTOR is so expensive simply because EA "really" wanted to use a popular theme, so they owe LA everything even their soul.

honestly they have put a lot of work into this game and they are keepin up with it...i love how they are fixing bugs faster than people can find them...for me i bought a 60usd game...i pay 15usd a month and i know im gonna keep playing the game...alot of games u buy once and enjoy for around 30 or so hours...at least with this game...i know for the most part that it will be the only game i seriously play for a long time coming...i am more than happy to pay 15usd a month for 6+ hours of good gaming a day for many many months in the forseeable future...and plus whats 15usd a month...2 hours of wages at minimum wage in usa...just dont get a pizza that week or somethin along those lines...honestly i see no problem with paying the little extra for a quality game that has a dev team behind it constantly workin on it...updating it...eventually releasing new content...and hopefully expansions

I'd only be willing to pay monthly for a game, if some friends in real life would get it with me. That'd be a nice way to play. Still it's totally a joke. I paid 60 dollars for a game, no more..

And monthly payments are the reason why i got a ps3 rather than an xbox.

It's not a joke when there is a legitimate reason for having the fee. It's not like a developer decided to release a game like Mass Effect 3 and then suddenly charge $15 for access. These are games with large servers and constant huge fixes and content updates.

If you are serious about the game, and you put a substantial amount of hours into it, then the fee is justified. I put 10-25 hours a week into Darkfall Online for $15 a month. Even a huge RPG like Skyrim at $60 is less value as far as time invested. That's 40-100 hours a month of gameplay, and that is a good deal at $15.

That business model is not going to "cease to exist" if Blizzard decides it's going to keep doing it. WoW could be $100 to purchase and cost $25/month and it would probably still be the most played MMO. When you're as good at making games at Blizzard is and have thus developed such an insane fan base, you get to make the rules. Don't like E3? No problem! You can just make your own and call it BlizzCon and have the expensive tickets sell out in minutes.

They only chose Star Wars because, after seeing a dozen companies fail to compete with Blizzard, they felt the IP was the only entity that had a fighting chance of giving WoW real competition, because of it's huge, pre-existing fanbase such as the Warcraft IP had before WoW launched.

and what better place to set an MMO than star wars? It also separates itself from the far more popular choice of swords and magic medieval fantasy settings

I believe its dependant on the game, I played wow for 4 years and never regretted paying the monthly sub due to the insane amount of content available on both factions, along with expansion packs that adds almost 1000 hours of quests, endgame content, high end crafting and difficult legendary crafting content and pvp. that game is worth the sub and expac, every other game that came out after isn't.

I would be spending more money on other games to keep me occupied for a shorter time then I would by spending $15 a month on a MMO. I am a adult and I work full time. $15 is pocket change for the amount of entertainment its providing.

I don't mind paying a monthly fee at all. Whether it was XBL or a WoW subsection. If I feel the service X company provides is good and is worth my time then yeh, I'll pay monthly.

11€ a month for 24 potential hours of play time a day with the limiting factor being your own time schedule is more convenient than anything the gaming world has to offer, assuming no special deals are involved.

WoW is 36 €cents a day.

Assuming every new game is 20 hours long (being very optimistic here) and costs 50€, that'd be 2.5€ per hour, two orders of magnitude higher than WoW.

Hating monthly payments pretty much equals being unable to do your math. And no, I haven't played WoW in months nor do I plan to ever play an MMO again, just saying how things actually are ;)

This. You could easily spend $60 per month, buying one new SP game every month and spend more than playing an MMO which could provides endless hours of gameplay. That $15 goes to many things to keep an MMO "alive." If you (TC) do not know that by now, then research it. Hate to say it, but it sounds incredibly stupid hearing people say it's stupid to pay for $15. They don't even know where that money goes to. Quite sad.. losing faith in humanity.

guys i think i know why everyone hates monthy payments...

they are kids and dont have jobs and they dont think they can talk their parents into buying the game and a subscription...

now for those of us who have jobs and realize that at worst its 2 hours of pay a month for more many many hours more gameplay a month...not to mention that you will most likely not be buying other games cause youre busy playing wow/tor...its not a bad deal...now i know people are gonna say stuff like but cod u only pay for once...true...but...u only have so many maps...u want new ones u buy them...and whats more...ive had the past couple of weeks off...been playing tor since it came out pretty much 12+hours a day...been taking my time and enjoying the game with my friends...questings and flashpoints and rp...gotta say i havnt reached end game yet...and i havnt even visited all the planets...now i know im gonna be spending less time playing after i go back to work...but how many people playin cod can say the same things

Even with people who have jobs $15 can still be quite hard. There are people who can barley afford to pay rent so paying a subcription to a video game isn't exactly easy. Also unemployment in the USA is very high not everyone is kids. Please stop being so ignorant.

While I understand they want compensation for continuing work on the game, I will probably never pay a monthly fee to play a game ever again. At least not for the high price they're asking for. Did for WoW for a while, and I'm very happy I stopped.

What? He can afford it, so everyone else with jobs can too! Otherwise, they're like.. kids and stuff.

more devs should follow runescape f2f/p2p idea. if you want more locations, skills, items, quest, etc, you'll have to pay extra
