So my cousin is supposedly getting an Alienware m17 x for christmas. I told him for gaming he should definetly go with a desktop, but it's gonna be a gift so he really has no say in the matter. Before anyone starts, yes I know Alienware's are overpriced, that's not what I need to know though.

The m17 x is customizable for anwhere between 1800-5000 dollars, what he wants to know is how good one in the 2200 range would be (all the info he has) I know that's kinda vague, as the extra money could be in the processor or the graphics card, but if anyone has any experience with the m17 x model in that price range, we'd love to hear how they handle modern pc games.

Thanks in advance!

if he knows who is getting him the gift and what it is, he should be able to sway them towards a desktop and he should grow a pair and say "I would rather build it myself and have the parts be my gift"

I've worked on an M17x. They are very bulky, and if he is going to be gaming, he may as well get a desktop.

This. There is no advantage to this laptop over any desktop... other than mobility.

What I would suggest is getting a $1500 desktop and a $700 laptop. My $700 laptop can play games like TF2, CoH, Dawn of War II, and Sins of a Solar Empire on lower settings. My $1000 desktop can pretty much max out almost any game out there.

I'm typing on an M17x right now and I can say it performs XD had to get a gooood laptop for school (Game Development) and thought might as well make it my mobile desktop too and it works awesome. Run all my games, even the new ones at 1920x1200 and can max most of the new games. Gamer settings on crysis warhead though too get a respectable framerate. but Yes it does perform, even on a dual core 2.7 XD I can max out Dragon Age on this so I'm quite satisfied, ofcourse I have the dual 265M's nvidia in here

Havent used the Alienware one but I do have a gaming Laptop and there are pluses and minuses to both. Desktops can be upgraded and are considerably more bang for your buck. Gaming Laptops despite being generally bulky and heavy can be carried around which depending on your lifestyle can make them a much more worthwhile investment then a desktop. The ability to game basically whenever you want is amazing. If he is a uni student, has a job that can provide with many breaks or just basically spends a lot of time outside the house then he cant go too far wrong getting it....
