is headed our way on Feb 07th

http://www.gamespot.com/kingdoms-of-amalur-reckoning/platform/pc/

dev-ed from a branch team that was a part of THQ but with quality of OTHER devs who worked on Morrowind and Oblivion. for those of you who dont know Salvatore, first, the man is a GENIUS as fantasy novels. i mean an ABSOLUTE....GENIUS!! (check some of the mans work and you will be blown away!!) anyway, with help from some of the devs from oblivion and morrowind and the company that was a part of THQ (BigHuge Games) this is, and im hoping, to be one super solid title to debut out very soon.

EDIT: i did not know that it was being Pub-ed by EA. gives me even more hope tha tthe game will bea a success...

Western devs can't build decent action combat engines. And I will keep saying this until one of them proves me wrong, so far none have. All the best action-adventure games which had "good" combat have all come from asian developers. Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Demon Souls/Dark Souls. The best the west have gotten to is God of War (which is hack n slash). When I hear of a RPG from the west concentrating on "Action-gameplay" I facepalm, likelyhoods are the gameplay will not be up there. Doesn't matter how good it looks if there''s no depth.

KoA's combat is average except for the finishers which are pretty darn cool. The game turns me off in many ways. The art style is nice but the graphics engine is incredibly dated. I played the demo on maxed settings, 1200p, and I wasn't impressed. Textures look like something out of a 2004 game and texture pop-in up the whazoo.

You're on crack. Western devs have made some of the best combat engines. Mount and Blade, Jedi Academy, Darksiders. And I'm actually pretty impressed by Amalur's after having played through the demo.

Oh, and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Can't believe I almost forgot that one.

EDIT 2: And there's Overgrowth, which is still in alpha but already has the best kung fu combat I've ever seen in a videogame.

Download the Mount & Blade demo from Steam, do the weapon training, play a few quick battles and then come back and let us know your opinion.

Yeah, WTF? Did you ever play JA multiplayer? And Mount and Blade is generally loved by people solely because of its combat. Dark Messiah was one of the best implementations of first-person combat I've ever played. Now Darksiders I could agree with not being that special, but mostly that it's average/good in terms of combat.

Kind of silly, actually - I played the demo on the PC first, thought it felt kind of odd, went and played it on my 360 and preordered the 360 version, even though I have a 360 wireless controller for my PC. :\ I guess it's better suited to my TV this go-around, though I'm still worried about load times and all.

Does anyone know what the DRM on this game is going to be? Since it's EA, are they going to require Origin, or is it only online activation? Can't find anything anywhere...

The Steam version isn't being published by EA, but regardless I think there's online activation. I know on consoles they're using that one time use activation code thing again, because they don't care about killing gaming.

I was not that impressed with the demo... but I LOVE Salvatore's books and I did like Morrowind, so I preordered this (hey it comes out near my bday and I am a HUGE rpg fan).

The fighting REALLY impressed me but not much else did in the demo... then again I have disliked demos before and loved the final product. Its pretty much impossible to do a demo properly for a big long rpg.

I am not expecting the best rpg ever, but if I get a good story to go along with that fun combat I should be happy.

yeah im with you pretty much. i just got finished with a go around with the demo aaaand while not the best i can see some shining points in the game. for example, the combat system, i think, is pretty awesome. juggles, finishers, stealth attacks.....weapon and armor upgrades...spells! im liking what ive seen and played with the demo now the story so far was kinda sketchy but then agian its a demo and im not expecting too much froma demo for such an expansive game. ill wait and see how things pan out when the game drops....i do want! and i will get!

What I saw from the demo impressed me enough to pre-order. Not thrilled about the art style (highly stylized cartoon fantasy), with that said some of the scenes and the atmosphere portrayed was pretty good. Combat was fun and it seems there is TONS of customization for both items and characters. All things I like, so it checked enough boxes for me. Plus, I hear the game is pretty massive (like 50-100 hours long) so sounds like a good deal.

It certainly "looks" interesting/great, but the demo was terrible, killed any chance of me getting this, just a way worse WoW only single player (because it is actually built as a MMO).

i tried the demo. it...er...it didnt work. it failed to render any of the game (this is with updated drivers). it would render the character creation screen..that was about it. i hear the demo is a buggy mess mind and i didnt really look for a solution. ill keep an eye on it though.

When I first played the demo I was put off from the opening cavern sequence and I turned it off. Yesterday I played through the whole demo and I actually liked it. I don't see much of a comparison to WoW, especially not in the actual gameplay. WoW is like a point and click borefest, this actually has a pretty interesting combat system. I like the bright and vibrant art direction. The world seems fairly large.

I preordered it for xbox today, because I get the impression it's more of a console game than a PC rpg. I don't think it's a mindblowingly good game, but I think it will be fun enough for a playthrough.

I'm a huge fan of Salvatores books, i own first editions of all his Forgotten Realms books (some even signed :)

But this demo with his named slapped onto it? I didn't like it at all. It had nothing that peaked my interest in the slightest. A shame really. But of course, it's just a demo, and i'll continue to read reviews when the game is out.

No offence but you don't know what you're talking about. It's just a fact that Japan are more astute when it comes to building fighting game combat engines, the same way the West are when it comes to First Person Shooters. It's nothing to do with being a "weebo" or not a weebo it's just the way it is. This is also the reason why 99% of the top competitive fighting games are asian made.. Steet fighter, Blazblue, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, King of Fighters, Arcana Hearts, Marvel vs Capcom etc. All made by the east, The west just doesn't have the same level of concept in game design when it comes to building action combat engines as the east.

i havent really played much of them myself this gen...i think umm......does DA:O count? i think thats about it unless someone can....errr...well, oblivion too i guess. havent played skyrim yet but most of my other RPG experiences this gen have been turn based for the most part...of course except for the WRPGs that ive played so far. DA:O, Oblivion, Fallout, M.E. 1 and 2.....hmm, i think thats about it. however i really like the artstyle!

Yeah, okay. But here are some things:

1. Why would you come into a topic about Kingdoms of Amalur talking about japanese extweme action games like devil may cry and ninja gaiden?

2. I have played a lot of those games, and Ninja Gaiden was the only one that really impressed me. Though I haven't tried bayonetta yet.

3. The best fighting game is Mortal Kombat 9, and that's western made.

4. I think you're racist.

Alright you keep spouting out the words "weebo" and "racist" over a difference of opinion on a "video-game genre". So I'm just going to take it you're either a little kid with no brains or a grown up with learning difficulties - or maybe both. Anyway I've concluded you're safe to ignore, have a nice day.

Plenty of western titles have great fighting systems. What you prefer is simply that...your own preference. xLittlekillx also made some perfectly valid points. You are the one getting all bent out of shape and making pretty heavy insults. If anyone is acting like a kid it's you.

Anyways this all really has pretty much nothing to do (or the games you mentioned) with Kingdom of Amular.

I played it, thought it was meh. I am getting kind of tired of all these action games pretending to be RPGs. Give me a good turn based battle system instead.

Good game for people who don't work at a Swedish Pizza Shack imo.

well theres plenty of games out there like that too. if that was the only option we had we all would probably wish there was more variety on teh market! anyway, its just as much rpg as the next rpg....its just not turn based.

Again, the Steam version WILL NOT require Origin.

xLittlekillx
But non-Steam PC versions will, it seems. Thanks, everyone who answered. :)

Yeah, it's probably a bit question mark there - I think it's a) Origin version b) Retail version (doesn't require Origin, uses an EA login like ME2 did for extra content?) c) Steam version (doesn't require Origin, ??? on EA login since that's what got ME2 and Crysis 2 punted from Steam)

I was interested until I watched the vid.

The graphics were too cartoonish for my tastes. Makes the whole thing seem kind of infantile.

play the demo! they did a good job of actually releasing a demo weeks before the release, we can appreciate that :)

The Retail version doesn't require Origin? That would be great! I have an EA login from ME2 already :)

Why would I want to play the demo if I no longer have any interest in the title?

Yeah, I'm not sure honestly - it's an EA Partners game AFAIK where it's pretty 'whatever the dev wants,' so it'd be very unusual for it to require Origin. I really don't know, though, and I don't think they'd make a 'special' Valve version that doesn't require Origin where every other version does. Everything made by EA *can* be activated on Origin since 2007 or so, so it wouldn't surprise me if retail versions could be activated even if they don't require it. But yeah. I don't know. :D
