[QUOTE="bogaty"]

I was interested until I watched the vid.

The graphics were too cartoonish for my tastes. Makes the whole thing seem kind of infantile.

see, the thing about a good game is you cant pass judgement based on a video alone. more often than not you will miss out on a GREAT experience. this game is so expansive and varied, i think that its gonna blow your mind. we already have a skyrim and mass effect, we have a Final Fantasy and a Valkyria Chronicles.....why not try something different. i think that you will be pleasantly suprised.... actually get passed tha cavern part, the game really takes off after that and you get to experience things that will really impress...

[QUOTE="Makari"]Yeah, it's probably a bit question mark there - I think it's a) Origin version b) Retail version (doesn't require Origin, uses an EA login like ME2 did for extra content?) c) Steam version (doesn't require Origin, ??? on EA login since that's what got ME2 and Crysis 2 punted from Steam)ChiliDragon
The Retail version doesn't require Origin? That would be great! I have an EA login from ME2 already :)

yeah i have one from......some game that i dont know of! but it worked for this game too. i have the ME games ont he 360...i cant remember if i had to register or not. i think i did though...

Final Fantasy and Valkyria Chronicles aren't sellings points.

As others have mentioned, I'd much rather have a turn based RPG with depth rather than another action game masquerading as an RPG. The goofy cartoon graphics seal the deal.

Eh? The demo is okay, has a great tutorial built-in. What's so difficult about downloading a demo?

Crud, you're kind of right. That took some doing to find, too: [Quote="KoA FAQ"]Do I need to register the PC version of Reckoning with Origin prior to play? Does that require the Origin client if I purchased Reckoning on Steam? All PC versions of Reckoning, except for the Steam version, require a one-time authentication through Origin and the Origin client. If you purchase Reckoning through Steam, you only need to authenticate the game through Steam.

http://forums.reckoning.amalur.com/showthread.php?2167-Reckoning-Available-Now-on-Steam%21 So it's some kind of weird in-between, noting the 'one-time' - it checks in once with Origin to activate, then from the sound of it (though unclear) you don't need the Origin client running anymore to play the game? Also: [quote="KoA FAQ"]Will I be able to digitally download Reckoning from Origin? Or, if I ordered a PC hard copy, will I be able to take the registration key contained with the disc and use that through Origin to download the game? Each retailer is offered their own incentives for customers, so downloadable versions of the game are available only directly through either Origin or Steam. Retail copies of the game must be installed from a disc.

edit: though yeah, EA's FAQ page there isn't nearly as vague :(

Or you need to keep the client running, but you can run it in off-line mode? :? This would frustrate me a hell of a lot less if they'd just come out and honestly tell me what the deal is, instead of sugar coating it to make it sound as inoffensive as possible. If I have to have Origin installed and online to play the game, just tell me that, so I know what the ground rules are. First rule of PR: Your customers hate being lied to so much that it's better for you to be honest about an ugly truth than to try and cover it up. Just tell me what I have to work with, whatever it is. I can take it from there.

I was quite unsure about this game but after reading the IGN's review-in-progress I'm rather inclined to give this game a chance. I'm not exactly a fan of its artstyle and colour palette but I'm hoping that gameplay and content will make up for it.

oh man! ....because this is a thread about Kingdoms, ill refrain from derailing onto how good i think VC is! or how great the story and art style is, or how unique they made the gameplay or any of that irrelivant stuff. because this is a thread about Kingdoms i wont mention any of that stuff....for the sake of this thread FF ill give you...but meh, to each their own. as always. i just wont pass on a game because of the graphics (unless theyre just absolutely attrocious......and even then its gotta be something equaly as bad with the gameplay. in most cases)

OP. Edit your opening post next time.

Western devs can't build decent action combat engines. And I will keep saying this until one of them proves me wrong, so far none have. All the best action-adventure games which had "good" combat have all come from asian developers. Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Demon Souls/Dark Souls. The best the west have gotten to is God of War (which is hack n slash). When I hear of a RPG from the west concentrating on "Action-gameplay" I facepalm, likelyhoods are the gameplay will not be up there. Doesn't matter how good it looks if there''s no depth.

ShimmerMan
Akrham City's combat is superb, and that's unbelievably done in the Unreal Engine 3. Also, Overgrowth (sequel to Lagaru), and Mount & Blade is a niche favourite.

Actually, I'm not passing of the graphics. Technically, they seem fine. I'm passing on the art style. As I said, it looks far too cartoonish to me and that's a turn off. Same reason I won't get SWTOR.

Steam's product page for the game doesn't mention Origin, and if you look at a game like ME or ME2, they're very good at spelling out if there is any other DRM involved. So if they say no other DRM, I believe them. Steam has a good track record for things like these.

Yeah, they DO say flat-out that if you buy the Steam version, it only authenticates with Steam. No Origin guaranteed. On the other... eh. It sounds like retail copies only require Origin once to activate, but... they're unclear enough about it that I would just assume you need Origin all the time until proven otherwise. :( That makes me so sad.
