I recently purchased my first digital download game, hitman blood money. This will probably be my last digital download. I purchased the game through the link here on gamespot. Everything worked fine. The download completed to my hard drive and right there alarms began to sound off in my head. The install file was only 690 mb. Now this might have been a good size for a game in the late 90’s but now most games ship on multiple cd’s or DVD’s and here I have an install file that’s only 690 mb. Anyway the game immediately started installing and that’s where the problems began. I get a popup message stating that “an additional file will be needed to install the game, click to continue” I click and nothing happens the download continually times out while trying to download pc_eng.str. I turn off my antivirus/firewall (even though I hate doing that), instant messenger programs, and all other services. Even disconnected from my router and hard wired directly into the cable modem. Still the download didn’t continue. I go to eidos website, and there’s no information available. I then hit Google and find other people having the same issue as me. Apparently there’s an additional file needed in order to install the English version of the game. I find a link to a site that has the file which so happens to be 1.8 gigs in size. Although the site is not an official eidos download site I download anyway. The download completes, I go to install the game and another popup hits for a file called hitmanbloodmoney.7z of course this download does not work, there’s no support on eidos and Google gives me another site (which so happens to be Russian or something) that has the file at 1.8 gigs in size. Keep in mind that there’s no download file management so at a range of 70kps-10kps there’s a possibility that I might loose my connection and will have to start all over. So now I have to get download management software in order to get these huge files.  I install firefox, all the downloads complete and the game was finally able to fully install. Now I am not upset about having to download a huge file. I expected the game to be huge. But I did expect after paying 40 dollars (which is more than the price at Best buy) that the file I download will be the complete game. Not that I have to go to alternate sites and download the rest of the game. As an added insult there was no support on eidos, gamespot which I purchased the game through, and eidos tech support did not write me back. I could have easily downloaded the game for free through torrents, but I do the right thing and almost loose 40 dollars because of poor service and support. Has anyone else had bad experience with digital downloads? Or Is this just an isolated case and I should try other games and companies?

direct2drive is good, but I have heard that some games dont work on steam.

I think Jagged Alliance had some issues.

I don't understand the point of digital downloads (DD).

A. they are more expensive (most games are exactly MSRB, while the only game I've paid MSRB for ever has been halo 2)

B. Box art isn't much but it's something, and DDs are really lacking on that aspect (add some wallpapers, windows themes, ect)

C. patches for DDs always come out much later if at all.

D. another company to give you the run around.  Most tech support lines give you a run around, for example Hitman support will blame windows and windows will blame hitman or some other 3rd party software (fireway, virus), and each company you call tends to blame somebody else.  DD service just becomes another call on the support list when the game doesn't work right.

Honestly I can't think of a single reason to buy a DD at this time, unless you live out in the boonies, and then mail order seems like a better option.

im in the military and stationed in germany i wanted to try digital download because ship times from the us can take about 2 weeks to get here. so downloading a game would be more convenient if it actually worked properly.

i used to buy all my games from EB. since they no longer sell PC games (or a very limited selection at best and my local store doesnt even have that) i buy from Amazon or if im in the mood to take a 45 minute trip ill hit best buy. 50 years from now when these D2D places are belly up ill still have the disks and be able to play. and before anyone laughs i still have my atari 2600 and all its games in working condition. besides if they are gunna charge the same price (or even more in some cases) as a box store then im gunna buy it AT a box store, atleast buying at a store is supporting a local buisness.

buying in a store sounds good, but what about for people who dont have that option. i thought this digital downloading would be a reasonable idea.

I found steam to be really good, other than steam's known problems (I do own CS:S so don't tell me that I don't) it DLed fine and I didn't have any problems with it. I would be a bit more wary of other DL services. In general though I like to buy the actual CD but Steam had a deal for 2 games and an exapansion for the price of one game I had to DL it :)

there is nothing better then buying a new game from the store, been so excited to play it on the train ride home that your reading the manual, and then sitting the box on your shelf with your other games.

well then for the 12 people at the south pole that cant get to a store in under a week of hard travel , id advise that they use a DL option. but for the rest of humanity that does have access to stores id say buy there first. but thats just a "Union" thing. im union and i prefer to support local.

the only thing i don't like about digital downloads is that it takes so darn long!  you figure, modern day games are going to be about 4-5 GB in size.  that's a file transfer of about 8 hours!  i downloaded project snowblind and was very pleased once i got it.  fun game, easy to buy.  didn't even have to go out in the rain to get it!

this game is really starting to piss me off and i havent even played it yet. today i noticed a new icon in my start menu shortcuts called "program updates" i also noticed that there is a icon for this in my control panel. no problem, i figure ill check add/remove programs and delete the software. well that didnt happen because the software isnt listed. i get pissed with myself because i feel like i mistakenly downloaded some spyware. so i right click the file to figure out what it is and i google it. aparently its a program by a company called macrovision that runs in the background to check for software updates. my issue is i dont want a program that checks for updates because thats what windows upate is for. i check the properities of the program and realize it was created the same day i installed hitman. i go to windows system restore to an early day in the week and now the software is gone. i reinstalled hitman while periodically checking my start menu and sure enough the "program updates" icon appeared again.  so now i have extra software on my system which i didnt ask for or was given an option to install. it sounds a lot like spyware to me. i dont think this game was worth the 40 bucks and im going to system restore again and count this one as a loss.

im not sure why you had to bounce all around to get those files to begine with. if you bought the game as a DL it should have been all one package. if it wasnt id be dealing with whome ever i bought it from, and also calling my credit card company and stop the charge from being paid. not checking google to find the missing pieces. there shouldnt be any.

also, just doing a system restore doesnt allways clear out the crap.

i like steam because i can play a game when its released RIGHT AT MIDNIGHT.

I like being able to play a game THE INSTANT it is released (its just too bad valve takes like 5 years to make a game)

The only problem I've heard with the digital downloads is you use a different patch to update the games and they aren't always out the same time as the retail patches.

I like the sound of not having to have the CD in the drive, but on the other and (someone pointed this out already) you pay the same price if not more for a DD without getting a hard copy or manual.

i like steam too.. i got a ton of games through steam.  i think the whole idea of digital downloads is a good one.. but they need some better compression... or i need a faster connection!  one of the two.. i had cable which was super fast (700kb/s) but now i am living on my own and can't afford anything better than dsl.  kinda sucks but it's still broadband... i would never go back to dialup!! LOL!

I've bought a few games online Bought cd key on plaync.com for Guild Wars works fine since you can get the client for free (most hassle free probably) Steam for many many games. Had problems earlier on when offline mode doesn't work or the config files get corrupt. Would still keep purchasing from Steam as I think it's reliable and a good service. If things go wrong the community is big enough to find a fix EA Link/Downloader. More basic than Steam but similar. Bough 2142 and it simply authenticates every time I start. Download was corrupt 1st time which was annoying but not too many hassles. Had a problem where the game wouldn't start but there was an easy fix that helped me. Would purchase from them again. I love not using the CD/DVD to play games. I also love the price discount I get paying USD for games, they end up being about $20 AUD cheaper than if I go for the boxed copy.

I feel your pain brother. I've been burnt and swore off downloaded games (except Steam).

One side note: the first fix file you downloaded (*.7z) is archived with an open source program 7-Zip. It's a great high performance archiving program that reads most compressed file formats (including .zip, .bz, .rar, .gz) including its own. Search 7-Zip on Google for the free download if you want it.

I don't have room to save all the boxes. And game manuals nowadays are next to nothing, usually. I still buy most of my games from the store, especially when they are cheaper. But there is alot to be said for easily being able to make backups of your downloaded game and never needing a cd to play it. I don't really think you have a valid complaint about needing the download manager. When downloading a file that big, it's crazy not to use one. There's just a lot of common sense things you need to know. If you are buying from a retailer, the publisher is not going to help you with your problem at all. Use a download manager for any file over 50 mbits. You didn't buy from gamespot,  You bought from trymedia.com.  Macrovision is the company that owns trymedia.

thats just it. you cant use a download manager. when you install the game, during the process you have a picture of two game characters in the background and the installation process begins. during the process it says "downloading pc_eng.str". keep in mind that it doesn tell you that its 1.8 gigs. but the main problem is that file doesnt exist on whatever server the installtion process is looking on. you have to physically write down the name of the file its trying to download. cancel the installation process. google the file so you can find a site that has it. download the file yourself which is going to take several hours. restart the install process. wait for the download to fail again. press alt-tab. open windows explorer. find the eidos folder that was created during the install process, paste the newly downloaded file in the folder then restart the installation process again. now doesnt all this sounds retarded.

I bought Half-Life 2 Episode 1 over Steam, it was very easy. I just gave them a credit card number and an hour later it's ready to play. I guess the downside to digital downloads is that you don't get a physical copy (although you could always burn the games you download to a disk). Digital downloading is still in its infancy, so it'd probably be best to do it the old fashioned way for now.

Buy the disc, register it on a download service.

I have my CS, Orange Box, etc. DISCS. But I can download them anytime, anyplace from Steam if need be. Did the same with UT III, DoW II, and a few others.

That is why, utm, you purchase the games from a reputable digitial distribution service such as Impulse, D2D, and Steam especially. With steam, for example, you download its client, make an account, buy Hitman or whatever game you want, and let it download automatically without any fuss. I have not had issue with Steam yet. But if you ever do, make sure you take screenshots of your account as you create it and all the receipts of the games you buy online. Aaand, at least buy some retail copies, like Orange Box, so you can have photos of the game and the CD-Key. This is in case some jackass hijacks your account, you'll have evidence to prove it's yours.

Digital Distribution is a means of controlling the price of a free market economy. That's what I read and that's what I believe.. If you use the excuse "I can't travel to the store" but have a credit card to purchase online, browsing retailers will bring up the right price in your books. Yes you have to wait for the package to arrive, but something is better than nothing (box and manual vs nothing).

To OP, first of all I recommend using Direct2Drive, Gamersgate, Steam and Impulse. These are all reputable DD companies and offer great deals on a weekly basis. Gamespot uses some 3rd party company called "TryGames.com" and I had a bad experience with them a while back. I don't recommend using it at all. As for you issues, it may be a port problem. Go to trygames.com and look for help to find the ports that need to be opened. Otherwise, ask for a refund and get the game on D2D.

DD is here to stay and I think it will be the primary or only way to get PC games in the near future, so we need to get used to it. Yes, there's a few kinks to be worked out but most of these services work exceptionally well.

Generally, I think patches come out in a decent timeframe. A lot of games are moving to a self-updating option anyway and I see that as a trend in the future. Some DD games work with regular patches.
