So I've stumbled across this mechanical keyboard: Corsair K90

I really like the aesthetic of it and after watching postiive reviews of it, I was wanted some feedback from people who have had extensive use with them )Not the K90 in particular, just mechanical keyboards in general).

I'm currently using a Thermaltake Tt Challenger and haven't even had it for a year yet. I'm generally happy with it but I'm curious about mechanical ones.

What are your opinions/experiences with them?

It really depends on the game you are playing and the type of keys of the Mechanical Keyboard.

well cherry mx red is the way to go for gaming I'd assume, you want little resistance as possible. Same goes for typing, want little resistence as possible for maximum typign speeds. Honestly if you are playing fps you do not need no mechanical keyboard or any game for that matter, rubber dome is perfectly fine, it's just kind of nice to have a mechanical one. Not worth 100$+ unless you got lots o cash.

I use the K90, with Reds. But I also like Cherry black. Or brown for a balance of typing and gaming.

I use a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate... Would never go back to membrane keyboards.

It uses Cherry MX Blue and it's fun to annoy friends over skype when I type fast or spam keys :D

I just got my k60 last week, and I LOVE it. It's freaking awesome. That's not to say its a huge improvement or anything...but i do love the way the keys feel and work. Gaming on the cherry reds is just great and I'd recommend it if you are thinking about pulling the trigger.

I use my IBM Model M for everything, gaming included, and love it. Note that I don't believe the rhetoric about linear switches being best for gaming; I hate linear switches. No tactile feedback that tells me that the switch just actuated or released, doing exactly what I wanted it to do without having to watch the game react first. You'll just have to figure out the switch type that's right for you. For me, it happens to be buckling springs, then Cherry MX Clears, then Cherry MX Blues in that order, since I want the tactility and don't mind the noise.

resistence will slow your typing speeds and apm or w/e though, it's a trade off.

I generally get used to whatever I'm typing on after a while. Old IBM Model M buckling springs are pretty stiff by comparison to my Cherry MX Blues, but it doesn't really make me feel slower at all given how hard I tend to pound the keys while I type. My typing speed is mainly limited by getting my fingers in the right places as fast as I can think of what I'm typing, not by how I'm pressing the keys. Also note that if the Cherry MX Clears came in a lighter-force version, I'd still be perfectly okay with that (and there's an "Ergo Clear" mod that involves swapping out the springs to do just that). Don't mention Cherry MX Browns; they feel practically linear, and I don't like them because of that. It's not the resistance I'm looking for so much as the distinct change in tactility whenever the switch actuates or releases.

Some resistance is probably a good thing as it will probably help reduce the effects of carpal tunnel syndrome.

When I'm typing fast like 130wpm, I can feel the keyboard slowing me down severely, it's getting mushy quick on my membrane keyboard. A mechanical would be nice, but it's still too pricy, I 'd love as little as possible tbh, red seems ideal. I might get the rosewill if it goes back down to 80$

One of the reasons I love my M. Also have an Alps white that feels pretty damn good too. I switch them out every once in a while.

well there is a trade off, typing speed vs feel

i'm fairly sure all the fastest typers use cherry mx red, pretty sure that sean guy does who does like 160wpm

i can do 130 on rubber dome ;p

The Corsair one in my OP is 20% and has a $20 MIR so it comes to about $90

I would love that keyboard if it didn't have an open design, also aluminum is probably annoying to clean and is doomed if you spill something on it.

Though mechanical keyboards are optimal for gaming, It isn't going to increase your performance over any cheaper USB anti-ghosting keyboard. Sure there is no polling delays with mechanical, but polling speeds are far beyond human reactions it isn't going to matter. Ping even good low ping would cancel out any edge if any that mechanical keyboards provide. In my opinion although good, i think mechanical keyboards are not worth the price. For a $100+ k90 would be better off spent on anything else.

i play fps games at a professional level with a £12 microsoft keyboard. "gaming" keyboards really are a big waste of money. there is just no such thing as a gaming keyboard. just companies making products and earning 300% profit because of the "gaming" tag. they fit a hole in the market because alot of new pc gamers think they need a special gaming pc with special "gaming" parts to be competative. pay more if you want one with more buttons, thats about all i have to say. make sure you have a good mouse, mouse mat, sound, headphones and ofc graphics though.

Mechanical Keyboards may have the "gaming" etched on them, but there is a BIG difference between them and your cheap $20 kb. Mainly durabilty, and feel of the keys, and in some cases faster wpm.

yeah, it's great fun, but I don't like the match ups with Arena(which is all I play) I am level 9, but I still can beat all the high ranks ofc. There is no shuffle, so some of teams get stacked so badly and it ruins the fun a bit. It's rare to get a close game. They should make a shuffle that factors in like KDR, or damage before death on average and then balence the teams accordingly.

Something else that nobody mentioned is that when you invest in a quality mechanical keyboard, chances are you will be using it for years. This means that you can really get used to the keyboard and learn everything about what it can do. If a key goes out, you can change it on your own. Cheap keyboards do not have this luxury, and I have worn out cheaper keyboards in a span of weeks. Not to mention, a lot of mechanical keyboards have really long warranties.

Are you insinuating that mechanical keyboards last longer?

they probably do, but i've never worn down a keyboard unless like it gets dirty and you might as well get a new one cause keyboards are cheap... well not mechanical ones

Something else that nobody mentioned is that when you invest in a quality mechanical keyboard, chances are you will be using it for years. This means that you can really get used to the keyboard and learn everything about what it can do. If a key goes out, you can change it on your own. Cheap keyboards do not have this luxury, and I have worn out cheaper keyboards in a span of weeks. Not to mention, a lot of mechanical keyboards have really long warranties.

Are you insinuating that mechanical keyboards last longer?

They do. Rubbers wears out.

They're not going to improve your gaming skills...

But mechanical keyboards feel nice to play and type on. Rubberdome vs mechanical is the equivalent to playing on a cheap no brand name $10 joystick or joypad to a premium Sony dual shock 3 controller or full Sanwa Denshi joystick. Big difference in feel and quality.
