I know that Raptor HDDs are faster at 10,000 RPM compared to the 7,200 RPM of average HDDs but they're also more expensive and they have significantly less capacity. Is the extra speed really necessary for gaming? I'd rather have more capacity with a 500GB HDD and I can't afford to use more than one Raptor HDD. If a raptor HDD is only going to make games load a little faster than for me it's not worth the extra cost.
Raptor drives are amazing. Are they worth the extra cost? Well that's up to personal debate, but if you have to have the best then the raptor drive is the best in terms of performance. If you don't mind slightly longer load times in games and even for Windows to boot up then get a normal hard drive.

The difference depends on how fast your cpu is and how much ram you have. Raptor drives usually boot up windows 30%-40% faster then a standard SATA drive. However, there are SATA drives with 32 mb of cache and they do give raptor drives are run for their money.

Thanks for that link. I'd recommend this over a raptor drive unless you are a speed freak and have to have the best of the best. With this hard drive however you do get performance close to raptor drive, but with much more hard drive space and they are much cheaper too. This is like the poor mans raptor drive right here, lol.
If all you do is typical day to day stuff, and just gaming, they arent worth it. You'd get a better value buying two hard drives and RAIDing them together. It'll provide better performance thana single raptor will.
At my old job i was a graphic designer. We had 2 75GB raptors in RAID. They were incrediably fast because it wasnt uncommon dealing with 2GB files. I was able to sneak in a little gaming here and there, and the differences in loading really werent huge. Startup times were speedier, but not anything major. Maybe shaved off about 8 or 7 seconds. Would just be a better idea to keep to PC in sleep mode.

ah yeah thatnks for that but my bro has a Dell XPS 720 and that has 160GB Raptors (me and my bro share computers, we got a Dell XPS 720 and a custom build we built just a few weeks ago, basically same specs as the Dell, except HDD and RAM) BTW the Dell has 4gb RAM

Oh well, OEM parts can be weird at times...like the 3.4GHz speed-binned P4 that actually runs only at 3.2GHz. Dell Insprion 4700s and a few others had those.
