I personally am not at all happy because steam does not work well on the school connection where I spend most of my time in the year, and if I have to go through steam for a game (even if I can buy it in stores and then run it through steam) then it is a huge hassle.

IMO Steam is a neat idea, but I absolutely hate having connection issues keep me from playing an offline game.

Steam is my prefered method of getting games, but if it is only on Steam I feel that is bad.

Digital distribution is definately the future, but I dont think it is quite ready as the only option.

This. I love how most people's complaints focus on not being able to play without connecting to steam servers...Especially when Offline mode is easy to access. i dont mind if a game is only on steam, It's just a bother to have to download them with a slow download speed.

mmmmmmm not sure about that

ive gone without internet for a coouple months before; when you boot your PC, steam will say something like "Cant connect, want to go offline?" and you click "yes" and, lo and behold, you can game!

hmm I will tell him to play in offline mode from now on. He installed GTA 4 on my steam account I dont know if on purpose or because hes an idiot, and he sometimes logs me out to play it which is a bit annoying.

I don't like it. It's hard to call it monopolistic when other publishers are volunteering to do it, but I can't help but see it as something along those lines, especially in regards to other digital distribution services. If it's Valve's own games, it's not as big of a deal. (Of course, I don't care about most of their games anyway.)

I prefer the STEAM versions since it is pretty convenient for me and I don't care about disk based copies anymore.

I am currently trying to wean myself off steam and use other DD services simply because I do not like the direction Valve is taking. I imagine this will be an unpopular view but I feel Valve is quickly becoming primarily a console developer and I don't see why I should fund a company that appears to be losing interest in the PC market.

Not exactly. You can go offline for a certain amount of time but you have to log in if i'm not mistaken once every month or something like that

Now days I only buy games on Steam. I hope they eventually become STEAM exclusive so they will get tighter steam cloud support etc.

It's been a pretty well-known issue for a while. Until a year or two ago, you had to be online to enable offline mode (which COULD be done without your intervention, by accident) - if there was a sudden WAN outage nobody could be able to connect to Steam to enable offline mode, with exactly the error message call_of_duty_10 reports. It happened enough times that we were familiar with it. Supposedly Valve fixed that last year though, and to be honest I hadn't seen it pop up anymore after someone mentioned that. And yeah, offline mode was originally 10 days before it forced you back online, then it was raised to 21 or 28 or something.
