Can it has be 1999 again? Whatever happened to the real twitch shooters? Quake 4 fizzled and Epic dropped the ball with UT3. Is the best multiplayer genre gone for good? Is it seriously going to be remembered by a bunch of flacid sequels? Props to CSS and BF2 for staying great over the years, but i need twitch! :(

In what? And lol...JigglyWiggly - hilarious. I always laugh when I pass a PigglyWiggly store...ah man...good times. And Serious Sam isnt really much of a multiplayer game is it? I mean...Im sure Quake Live has more players...and that would sad too. If only UT3 took off. I think they released it at a bad time. It was the transitioning period in games. The consoles were just barely released and I dont think many people had upped their PCs yet...at least...I hadnt yet.

Arena Twitch shooters needa resurgence, but the problem is that too many mainstream gamers are too hooked on super slow games like Halo, they couln't handle the speed of quake, and people tend to not like getting killed over and over. appealing to the casual market is what has really hurt gaming this gen.

Halo is casual? Halo pro players make hundreds of thousands in tournaments. I don't see much Quake players and I don't think the reason is because they can't handle it. It's just plain boring.

I agree. I think the opposite is true also, I could never get into halo, COD and the like. Always felt slow and venerable, or maybe i just have a serious case of ADHD. But yeah.. games feel clumsy and talent-less now.

MLG is even trying to get quakelive on the circuit and a lot of people on there are trying to push for it, the only problem is that MLG knows there aren't an army of teenagers willing to dedicate their lives to quake for years, its easier to do it with halo, since it takes much less skill compared to twitch shooters like Quake.

Yes it does, I can kill you in css or quake 3 :D CSS especially that is my best, and I'd consider it a twitch shooter, although not nearly to the extreme of Quake 3. To the guy who said Halo takes skills, no it doesn't. If there are 2 ppl coming at you and you all have the same guns, and no cover, you're dead. In CSS or Quake 3 you can kill them.

Twitch shooters really bring out the difference in skill gaps, which is awesome, people with no skills shouldn't get any kills. Which is why they don't catch on as much as nub games.

This.

Why is skill coming into this? Both require skill...DIFFERENT skill but skill all the same. Twitch is in its own league and skill in other shooters is another league.

I loved UT and UT 2004. UT3 was such a huge disappointment...

yes and to some extent its true. Most people are very casual gamers, and Halo is mostly a casual game, but its one of those games that can be played competetively when tweaked correctly as MLG does. Halo is a game thats easy to pick up and play but it takes somewhat of a timeframe and teamwork mind you, to master. Quake is a very hardcore twitch shooter that takes an incredible amount of skill, its either all out or gtfo in this game. Most real gamers would quake fun if they knew more about it, but since they have COD and halo slpped in their face so much how can they?? they think Halo and COD is the appex of competetive play, and then i hear things like "what is taht game it looks old, eeew the graphis" without having an idea as to how complex the game is.

yes, it was a time when level up meant that the guy who's shooting you is literally a level up. these games had a lot of z-axis shooting, modern games just don't reward you for coming down on top of your enemies from a few stories' height, and certainly don't let you rocket jump to that height, either.

Battles for supremacy, oh how the arrogant think they have won.

My game is superior to your game for this reason and this other reason, and you are dumb because you like a certain game on a certain platform...

I for one, wouldn't mind a few new Arena shooter's thrown in the mix, I might enjoy one every now and then, so may others, I also would hate it, if they were the only shooters being released. (it is then when fps games will become boring)

Lastly you know nothing of the skill I may or may not have, so think a little bit before you vomit the words: "You are only saying that because you have no skill, you noob."

The closest we are to something like Quake 3 is Team Fortress 2 or Quake Live of course, but that more or less is Quake 3. Serious Sam HD also gets pretty close, but there's no rocket jumping for example.

They make < $5,000 per player with a win in normal tournaments. The most they make in a year for a tournament is their national championship which is $100,000 before taxes and before they split it amongst their teammates. So no. Average halo player lives below the poverty line if it is their only income.

Maybe for some this is true. But I hate arena shooter type games because they simply bore the hell out of me. I like online shooters for the gameplay and immersiveness of a team based warfare and an interactive battlefield. Arena shooters you simply kill for the points and stats and its stupid. I'd rather have a slower paced warfare shooter with vehicles and destructive environments and buildings crumbling and being blown apart around you.

yeah but the problem there are waaay too many of them out on the market, no one ever said to have ONLY twitch arena shooters, we jsut want them to come back so there is a balance I remember switching from UT2k4 to Battlefield 2, I preffered UT2k4 but having options and a change of pace is good. If you were to play slower team based shooters all the time you would get bored as well.

[QUOTE="kdawg88"][QUOTE="JigglyWiggly_"]Too many nubs can't handle it.Prexxus
This may seem a dubious comment, but I actually think it's the truth. Them n00bs just can't handle the skill that these games require.

Lol. You guys are halarious. Do you honestly beleive what you're saying?

Its the truth. I can give you plenty of reasons why arena shooters require more skill than say COD. There was a thread on this in system wars. Tons of irrefutable reasons were given why arena shooters are the toughest to be competitive in. http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=27430548&msg_id=324640330#324640330 Heres a snippet COD does take less skill. So does pretty much any other fps where you get to spwan with your fav weapon. All you have to learn in COD is one weapon, and assualt rifles are a noobs paradise. So easy to get a kill with them in COD. Theirs also no movement tricks to learn. look at Quake where you spawn with an assualt rifle that requires 10x more damage than the worst assualt rifle in COD to get a kill. Every other weapon is unique and requires its own technique. You have to learn each one since you never know which weapon pickup you'll spawn closest to. Then you have the movement system which allows an experienced player to move much faster around the map. Take quake, get rid of all the weapon pickups so players dont have to learn each one, remove srafe jumping so players dont have to learn advanced movement tactics, increase the assualt rifle damage 8x so you only have to get your crosshair over the enemy for 2 seconds to get a kill and you have COD, the noobs fps.

[QUOTE="AiurProtoss"]Arena Twitch shooters needa resurgence, but the problem is that too many mainstream gamers are too hooked on super slow games like Halo, they couln't handle the speed of quake, and people tend to not like getting killed over and over. appealing to the casual market is what has really hurt gaming this gen.blues35301

I feel sorry for you that you can only like that type of game. I like Battlefield for all the reasons you stated but no military team game can match the feeling of for instance getting a triple kill off a dodge jump shock combo.

I just can't understand why is UT3 so unpopular. It's not exactly groundbreaking like the first UT was but it can be great fun. I'm still hoping it will become popular in the future so I'm keeping my copy somewhere safe.

Ahh this brings back memories. I miss quake and other twitch shooters. Halo is boring by comparison
