Alright, so this is probably a pretty trivial question for most of you guys in the A/V Discussion forum, but for me it's rocket science...

I know I'm also going to get flamed, but whatever. I bought a Steelseries Siberia V2 USB Headset and I was just wondering which Audio Enhancement should I use to get optimal sound quality from them.

Also, how to do I know which range of hz/db combination is good for my headset? I don't want to apply to much bass and then have my headset die on me.

Any clarification/help is appreciated, except if it's about getting a Sehnheisser with a clip-on mic.. I don't want that.

Thanks.

In general you are going to want to leave the audio enhancement options off. You might have some luck with the Equalizer to adjust sound settings to your liking, but otherwise it's generally just going to add processing noise to the audio. Your mileage will vary, since we all have different preferences, but otherwise - unless you feel there is something lacking - you can leave them off without worrying that you're missing out on anything.

Happy gaming,

Makes sense :) Thanks! I don't feel like anything is missing, I just wanted to know if there were any optimal settings for it. I'll adjust the equalizer if something sounds off though, thanks again :D

If they're the default Microsoft enhancements, leave them off. They most likely are, with a USB headset. Now, if it's a sound card that offers EAX and CMSS-3D Headphone or Dolby Headphone or so forth, you DON'T want those disabled all the time (well, YMMV on the later two techs, but not in-game EAX), or else you're not getting the most out of your gaming audio, especially games from the days when hardware-accelerated audio was the norm. ...Actually, I need to rephrase this. Don't enable or disable anything from Windows' own sound control panel; instead, manage everything from your sound device driver's control panel. That way, everything still works as intended in case you want something like a binaural surround filter turned on. On the other hand, a lot of "audio enhancements" are indeed just unnecessary colorizations to the sound...

Binaural surround filters like that are inherently YMMV; everyone's HRTF is different, and if yours falls too far out of the average, it won't work. Fortunately, it's optional and not required. Personally, I can't do without CMSS-3D Headphone for my 3D games these days; it's like an aural wallhack for me. I only use Dolby Headphone on consoles, but it also helps there too in that I can at least tell apart front and rear, which never happens with plain stereo. However, I turn such things off on 2D games or when listening to music, because there's no positional audio gain or situational awareness advantage to be had to make up for the hit in sound clarity.

I find I can hear locations fine in games with tha Asus GX feature of my sound card and set to 8 channels. I can't tell direct front from direct rear though, but I don't see how you could with 2 speakers.

Btw, would it be better to use the USB soundcard or the onboard audio? I can switch between them.

If you don't have a sound card chances are the USB is better.

Well it's an Onboard one so... guess the USB is better. Thanks
