NDA is still in place. I've been playing in the beta for a few weeks now. Pretty good game, and the latest patch fixes most of the issues I had with it.

Battle Fund pricing is..a little higher than I was expecting (relative to item costs.) Nothing too outrageous, though..and they're really not something you need anyways.

Well, it's not some hardcore shooter with amazing amounts of depth..but even experienced FPS gamers should enjoy it. There's a good number of veteran Battlefield 2/2142 players in the beta who all seem to be having a good time with it.

Oh yea, I like it alot :D, but I would never play it hardcore, although the character building is addictive.

i suppose people may like it if they've never played any real online shooters such as Cs, Tfc, tf2, bf2 etc. etc.

the game is dreadful in my opinion, the beta could barely hold my attention.

to sum it up...the whole time i played i was thinking "why would i play this when i could play tf2?"

At heart, Battlefield Heroes is a lesser version of the Battlefield series with a cartoon style on top of it. Built to take advantage of micromanagement it could be a turn of for people that are adapted to having all your content shipped into one package. If system requirements is a disadvantage for you to play the Battlefield games then Battlefield Heroes can be flourishing for you. Currently it's still in Beta stage.

The only major similarity between this and TF2 (other than the visual style) is the fact that both are easy, pick-up-and play games..which would lead me to say: if you're a veteran FPS gamer and like TF2, you're likely to enjoy this.

If you actually played the game having enjoyed TF2, I'd find it strange that you didn't take a liking to BF:H for a decent amout of time...

You're playing the wrong game if you're looking for action along the lines of TF2. This game is a totally different animal. Also, your comment about having played "real" online shooters is fairly comical and biased. I've played every multiplayer shooter from Doom (deathmatch) to Counter-Strike to Battlefield 1942 to Team Fortress 2 (my favorite online game, by far), and I still find that BF Heroes holds up well and offers much more depth than most other online shooters.

The BF Heroes beta has, overall, been very enjoyable up to this point. It takes a bit to get used to, but once you start leveling up and earning new abilities (and unlocking new weapons), the game just keeps getting better and better. I can still remember being at the very low levels, having the most basic of abilities and being frustrated when tossed into servers with guys who had higher-level characters, allowing them to absolutely dominate me. I've noticed that as the levels increase, however, the playing field becomes more even and the number of levels is not so much important as your choice of weapons and how you use your abilities in the thick of combat.

In my role as a Gunner (aka heavy weapons guy), for example, I can go into battle and throw explosive dynamite kegs, activate a shield that protects me from damage, use a sprint ability to get a temporary speed boost, activate my "focus fire" ability to make my MG more accurate, whip out my shotgun to do major damage up close, and even whip out my bazooka to pop tanks and infantry from afar and launch myself up onto rooftops, giving me an extreme advantage over most other players. As you can imagine, with so many options available, it can be a little overwhelming if you don't have your abilities assigned to convenient shortcut keys and if you aren't familiar with what the abilities do and when to use them.

Each of the three classes has separate abilities that make each one unique. I think the Soldier's "grenade spam" ability is neat, for example, and of course the Commandoes have the ability to cloak, snipe with great accuracy, etc. When you combine the different classes with the XP system (almost like an MMO) and character customization, you've got yourself quite an in-depth shooter, even if that may not seem true from the outside.

The three maps are pretty good overall. Victory Village is purely focused on close-quarters infantry combat, with the most intense action taking place at the center of the map where the fountain is located. Seaside Skirmish is heavily focused on vehicles, with large, open fields, tanks popping out from behind every corner, and planes swooping overhead, battling it out, wing-clipping infantry, and shooting up vehicles. Buccaneer Bay is sort of a mixture of the two, with a big wrecked pirate ship in the middle that serves as an excellent place for snipers to garrison and infantry to counter tanks that try and drive in to cap the flag. The town, located just above where the pirate ship sits, actually completely blocks off vehicles, making sure to put the focus on infantry combat and flag capturing.

The visuals look great and the game runs very well - much better than TF2 and other highly-stylized, cartoonish games. The netcode seems to be acceptable, despite some lag spikes here and there. I understand that most of these spikes are caused by beta maintenance, howevers, as the developers have posted updates about them and are constantly working to fix networking (and performance) issues.

The only gripes I have about the beta are that there is no voice chat, you can't pick your spawn point, and you must use match-making (there is currently no server-browser), meaning that you can sometimes end up playing on maps you don't enjoy or getting stuck in servers with zero or too few players to have an enjoyable match (which has happened every now and then).

If I had to rate the beta out of 10, I would give it a 7.5 or 8. It's definitely worth your time and is an excellent alternative to other free shooters such as Combat Arms. There's quite simply nothing like it.

...Each of the three classes...THA-TODD-BEAST

It was sounding quite fun until I reached that point - are there really only 3 cIasses to pick from? :(

I played BF2 and BF2142 extensively, and something that really made me prefer BF2 was the greater variety of cIasses and how each served a specific purpose in the team. BF2142 merged 2 cIasses into 1 with several of them, cutting down from 7 to 4. TF2 is also great for this, providing you with 9 distinct characters to pick from.

Cutting down to 3 just seems like it is oversimplifying things

Personally I really enjoy playing a supporting cIass, either Medic or Support from BF2, or taking the defib unlock in BF2142- primarily keeping a squad alive and fighting, rather than directly fighting myself. Has this sort of role disappeared from BF Heroes?

I have a key...Played the Beta.......Sucked.......but those who still watch cartoons on saturday morning may love it........If you like a FPS made by Looney Toones you will like this. Most true FPS players will not........and I was able to tell you my opinion without writing a novel like I am some kind of game expert like some folks above..... :)

The fact that there are only three classes allows the game to not bogged down with unnecessary classes. They've actually taken most of the classes from the previous BF games (from 1942 up to 2142) and sort of "combined" them into the ones we have now. The Gunner, for example, could be thought of as a mixture of the Assault and Support classes. There are also items you can purchase - bandages for healing, and wrenches for repairing - that give back some of the abilities of other classes that are missing, such as Medic and Engineer.

In short, although it may seem like things are oversimplified, they're actually just compressed into a fewer number of classes. There's still plenty of depth and abilities to be had with each one, however, and almost everything you could perform with classes in previous BF games can be performed in BF Heroes.

My post above was not so much to tell my opinion as it was to go in depth about the style of gameplay (focusing on abilities), the maps, the performance, and so forth. If you can't handle a little reading, you should skip my posts entirely. I prefer not to type like a third-grader, using one or two sentences to try and summarize what needs to be given many more words.

The gameplay is nowhere near the quality that tf2 is. I could see lots of people who enjoy flash games and aren't really into "hardcore" fps playing this. I'm not saying it's a poor game, i'm just saying in my opinion there are much better things out there. Although you do have to pay for them.

I agree that it won't necessarily be a better choice than shooters one must pay for, but I think that speaking of free games, it comes the closest of any I've played to matching a retail game. It's just a fun little game overall, and the folks automatically downing it because of its visual ****or playful atmosphere just don't have a clue. You'd figure they'd say the same things about TF2, but in the case of BF Heroes, they suddenly (and mysteriously) begin to hate the humor found within it. I guess I can't blame them when you look at certain things, however, such as riding on the wing of an airplane, clucking like a chicken, then parachuting down and causing havok. Nuts! Just nuts!
