Do you think that counter strike is as threatening to beginners as others make it out to be? I remember playing it for the first time and not doing half bad, and to this day I still get plenty of kills every game.

Counter-Strike was the first online fps I ever played. I'm pretty sure I sucked horribly but it was just to much fun :D

it certainly can be, a few hard opponents and long rounds can turn new players off but I think if they get a few kills it won't be too bad.

Depends on server andskill with otherfps. Some servers have amazing players thatnoobs wouldstand no chance.
Cs however isnt terrible for noobs. The ability to get a kill easily overall helps.

Timma hit the nail right on the head. Its about the servers. Though many servers usually have that mix of bad, medium, and good players, some servers really are great for beginners and other servers are horrible.

I found CS (or at least the Source version) to be pretty hard. I'd like to think I'm pretty good at most FPS games, or good enough to finish all the ones I currently own at least on normal a couple of times each, but I got smacked down pretty hard the first time I played CS:S. Although, that could have a bit to do with the fact that I hardly play multiplayer. I just don't get into them, except for Half Life 2 Deathmatch. Other than that, I don't know, just can't really get into them. Even the Unreal Tournament games I don't play multiplayer, only single, because I see those games as part FPS and part sport game (about 70/30 ratio). But with a bit of practice and the right server, you should get at least decent in maybe a couple of days or weeks, depending on how long your playing for

I remember the WC community being very evil to beginners. I lost all my first 8 online games (winning\losing is being tracked!) and most of the times my allies were jumping in their chairs mad.

If people make mistake with random-allies\friends, usually the others are raging at their mistakes shouting things like "NOOB". Some would leave (making the beginner automatically lose, 1v2 isn't easy)

So I expect the CS community to be as harsh as the WC one. It's also obvious that playing with teamates that regularly die, that you can't trust,is very frustrating.

I find the CS community is very cut-throat but at the same time when you can get on a mic and talk with them, most of them are really fun and good natured. Sure there are always a few bad apples in the game but you'll find that anywhere in life.

THE CS community has been my home since before 1.3 and I always come back to it in the end.

it depends what server you play on, if you play with clans then you could really get raped if you're new. but most public servers have a lot of differently skilled players so everyone can do something

I'd say CS is pretty easy to get into because a beginner can kill a skilled player in one shot with lots of weapons. If the game was hard to get into I doubt that many new people would actually start playing. I do think though that the average skill level in pubs has increased noticably over the years, but in response the game has been made a bit easier. Transitioning from public play to competitive play is harder than just getting into public play.

There is just no way the CS community is harsh. Yes it might be difficult but I have never seen anybody yell at anybody else without most of the server interfering and telling the "vet" to STFU.

I started playing CS Source, played one game, asked what the best weapons were and tips for maps etc, they said "just dont be a noob", then I lost a one on one with a player and got called a noob, they said there was no excuse for losing it, I knocked the game off, played against bots ever since.

Ya it is, I've been playing CS (and now CSS) on a regular basis for over4 years and I say that I'm still learning, so u figure. But if u can get the machanics and score a few kills, u'll see it's the most rewarding shooter out there (and the best one of all time for me).

I'm planning on getting CS:S (along with HL2 + a couple of other steam FPS's) tomorow after my last exam (yay!), I need something to keep me busy for 3 months, and that seems like the best way to do it. I'm not new to online FPS's, so hopefully it shouldn't be too bad for me.

I think it's a bad game for beginners since you have to wait to respawn and it can be hard to get into a groove of playing good. Call of Duty is better, since you respawn faster. And people take counter strike too serious and that's no fun.

As mentioned before it all depends on the server, some servers are like Xbox live in that they insult every thing you do, others, like the ones that I play, people with that attitude are usally kicked within a few minutes (& sometimes banned if they keep coming back & causing trouble). Most of the servers I play, people tend to be nice to the new guys & show them hints and what not & try to help them enjoy & understand the game. My advice is that you join a random server & spectate a few rounds, see how they play, join the game & try to stick close with team members (but not too close so you block them or something).

The thing I love most about the game though which is great for beginners are all the different types of mini-mods.

Look at gungame. The rounds are fast and it helps you get familiar with each and every weapon since you have to kill someone with them as you advance. The fy_ maps are small and fast too, with you mastering the individual main weapons you pick up from the start. Then you have deathmatch with practically no respawn at all. Then you have surf... my gawd do I love Counter strike surfing...

Yepz. PLaying against bots isn't going to help you all that much in the long run. Bots are told to think a specific way, they shoot in specific ways, so on so forth. Online is obviously different. People don't follow that same rail, and the difficulty ranges throughout in a server as everybody is on their own pace and level. I do urge you just keep searching for those golden servers. Kind of lame that you stopped playing a multiplayer game because of one server. Though the one positive thing about bots is the loyal team play :).

It can be, if your playing seasoned players (but there are tons of servers so you could easily just find another one) and just learning the ropes can be quite frustrating. But, then again CS is by no means a complex shooter by today's standards and is mostly run and gun. I just feel sorry for casual gamers getting into a game like America's Army since hardly anyone plays it anymore and the people who do are every experienced and not the mention the complexity of the maps and the lack of servers. And fps's by design are not nearly as complex as other genres so it shouldn't be hard for anyone to play an fps and not have fun, unless they are just averse to the genre.

Eh, I'm kinda lucky with online FPSs, so I guess it wasn't all that bad when I started CS:S. I played it for a couple of months and got to about rank 35 out of 2500 on the server I played on, but it took too much out of my free time, so I stopped playing it.

I remember when I first played CS beta 7.1 for the first time back in 1999. My first map was cs_office and I started off on the the Terrorist team. I had no idea what I was doing so I shot at my own teammates(Terrorist) because they looked like bad guys lol. Everyone is a beginner at one time or another.

Hey man, no reason to feel down about your experience. First of all, those source noobs have no right to call you noob, they are the noobs in the first place for playing this terrible game called source. Most of the source players I know are either failures at 1.6, or 14 yr olds that never knew what 1.6 is. It's laughable that valve spent so much effort on source and yet it hasn't come close to achieving half the success that 1.6 has had.

Coincidentally I played my first game of CS yesterday, I thought it was great fun, I did rubbish, but none of my team mates complained. By the end of it I was pretty good and it was only an hour or so. So for me it was quite noob-friendly.

Playing CS Source online was the first FPS on PC I had ever played, I barely new the buttons, playing against bots has helped me a lot, espeically with weapons, movement and map knowledge.

Come on people, it's a competitive FPS, someone needs the crown, and it's CS. The only way you get better is by playing with better players. No one should take offense by anything anyone says, as it should motivate you to get better. Everyone who jumps in there for the first time is gonna get a reality check, but time along with practice is the key. People need to start growing a harder shell. It's only video games.

It all depends on the server. If you go to your average pub server you are likely to find hackors and whining 8 year olds spamming the mic and spraying grotesque pr0n all over the walls. You need to find the perfect server, like the GoblinARMY server, where it is a controlled and monitored environment where everyone has a good time, even newbs (not n00bs).

Thats why I see people going 3 and 34, lol. Some people are born natural, I on the otherhand dedicated a lot of time in CS:S (we're talking about Source, right?!) Before I went on my 6+ month hiatus, I was going around 40 and 10, lol. I just got back into it, I'm not great, but I enjoy it. Especially hanging out in longhall with my fellow T's.

About the cs community... First off their is no one mind set in cs. Every server is defferent, from elitest servers, noob servers, hack servers, and public servers theirs a mix of everything.

For anybody whose played games like wc3, the overall mindset is nowhere near as bad. Teamwork isnt as required (in wc3 if u had 1 bad teammate u were screwed), and so if u suck people mostly wont mind.

AS a noob i advise playing regular servers with as little mods as possible to get a feel for the actual game. Deathmatch, gun game and zombie servers are fun but have little to no resemblance of the actual game.

Finally for 1.6 vs scource, the two overally play different. Scource uses a new faster engine, guns shoot/spray faster, and players move faster. Faster shooting means when u spray u have a better chance to killbefore going empty. Some say scource is more noob, but its personal choice. I enjoy playing both, however my pc cant handle scource too well.

Y'know... Forgive my undeniably bitter assessment of the truth, but... That there exists a "1.6 vs. Source" debate doesn't surprise me at all, since it's in the nature of CS players to take any chance they can get to piss and whine and get competitive over something stupid.

I play Gungame more these days, began to hatewaiting.I think any largely played online FPS is offputting to new players but CS takes the cake. the Recoil can be illogical, these soliders can't fire more than 2 or 3 straight shots and even then you can barely trust the bastards. When CSS first came out it was imbalanced horribly and hs came like magic (ie i shot ur foot bullets hit ur teeth lol).

Unless you stick with cs and learn the recoil behavior of all the guns it can be a pain in the ass, and poeple that have aim still wonder why they've shot outlines of poeple.

I believe that Counter-Strike Source is much forgiving for new players. Aside from learning your objective, which is usually rescue the hostage or prevent/disarmed the bomb as a Counter Terrorist team, or vise versa try to plant a bomb or prevent the hostage rescue there really isn't any pressure for a new person to go with.

Gun and run and have fun. With time you will get better while objective will be the same.

I would recommend going to few server until you find the ones you have most fun with.

Each multiplayer game will give you hard time, one more then other until you get adjust to it. CS or CSS are pretty friendly for newcomers, thought first few times on certain servers you might get yelled at. But hey, you have to start at some point, just tell them it's your first time and you're still learning. :)

I agree it can be really tough to get started in CS because so many people in servers will be hostile to you when you're making mistakes and figuring things out by trial and error, which takes a long time. My friend bought this guide recently called 'The Art Of CS' made by a CS world champion which I've been reading at his house when I'm over there and it's really good, has easy explanations of things and videos to show you how to do certain moves. You can find out more at their website www.tao-cs.com but from what I've read so far it looks like a good way for people to get better without frustration.
