best $250 video card for 1680x1050?

hi, right now i have a gtx 260 ocx maxcore (performs close to a gtx 275). it's still pretty good, but i'm having to lower some settings on new games to get constant good fps.

now please keep in mind, i use 1680x1050 and i don't wanna spend more than $250. i am not loyal to nvidia or amd.

also, single card setup only. i don't do crossfire or SLI.

what you guys think?

the 560 is going to come out and you'll prolly want to pick that up. It'll also push down the price of all the other cards.

Right now the radeon hd 6870 and the geforce gtx 470 are about at your pricepoint. Both look to be similar performers.

AMD and nvidia seem to be doing a good job pricing their products that perform similarly.

If you look elsewhere you may be able to find an AMD 6870 too.. but the only ones left on Newegg right now are between $270 and $300 :?

If it was me I would just hold off, because going from a GTX 260 OC to a GTX 460 or 6850 wouldnt be worth a even worth it. You would have to spend more then $250 on the GTX 470 or 6870 to see any real improvement. I heard that newegg was increasing prices because of that 10% carpet discount on all video cards, so rather than pick which cards to get the 10% they just put the newer cards about 10% more expensive to make up for the 10% discount.

Ya I havn't heard that the 560 is a few weeks away, more like early 2011 but basically as it stands is if you REALLY want to upgrade the 6870 or the 470 would be the real upgrades, the 460 if you buy a super overclocked or oc it urself will match a stock 6870 and sometimes pass it. The 6870 is only reference now as well, so if you want to wait a little while you will start to see some custom cooled overclocked models.

the XFX 6870 came out for $259 originally. dropped $5 then went up $15 and they tacked on another $5 for shipping.

6870 was in stock yesterday. so they probably aren't using placeholders. but I guess they'll take advantage of the demand. if they don't have a consistent supply.

Yes GTX 470 is the least I would recommend as well, dont go lower than that as you already have a decent card and the upgrade might not be worth it then.

Now would be a HD6870, in a month or so the gtx560 would be an option that fits the bill as well.

All good suggestions; I would just keep in mind that black friday sales are on the horizon and the wise person is well informed and ready to strike at the best deal.
