Avira's Antivir is the best I've used. AVG gets too many false positives for my taste, and I just can't stand the interface Avast uses.

I like Avira, but my new recent favourite has been Microsoft Security Essentials.

I'd to say the BEST free antivirus is your brain and effective use of it. Second best? Firefox + noscript + adblock plus ... get rid of free running java-script all over web pages and you've eliminated 90% of the leaks where attacks hit you from such as infected ads etc. If your speaking af actual AV here are my 4 favs. Avast, AVG, spybot S&D and Adaware. The last two on that list I highly recommend you have regarldess of what you chose. Both run only when selected (if adaware is set up properly) and do not take up system idle resources.

Go download Microsoft Security Essentials.

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

It's a 100% free program that is constantly updated by microsoft, it's very light you can barely even tell it's scanning while you use your pc.
