I just got into the original KOTOR but I really like Bounty Hunter (obviously) and Episode 1 Racer for N64.

Kotor would be the best, Jedi Academy is a close second, it just had an awesome combat system, prolly the best I've seen.

Yeah, Kotor and Jedi outcast are the best, Kotor 2, not so much... Maybe after the restoration project, still nowhere near those two.

x-wing alliance is the best star wars game made ever, for me it was better than the original x-wing or tie fighter. But in terms of slightly more recent star wars games probably kotor 1 would have to be the best.

X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, and the originals.

I've never played KOTOR, but I could never get into Dark Forces or Jedi Academy.

OMG  I forgot republic commando!  It is still better than GRAW (same genre, squad-based tactical shooter you could say)!

And the original Tie Fighter, one of my first space simulations.  That game has it all: good story, cool animated clips, various tie fighters and other ships to fly (Advanced Tiefighter FTW!).

Dude, its just a movie series. While some of the movies aren't perfect (And use physics from another universe), it is a great storyline. Maybe you don't like it....But hate it? It looks like you're acting against the norm for the sake of it when you say that.....

And who made you play Republic Commando anyway?

why? star wars is kiddy fariy tale crap, it's the harry potter of scifi and yet it's considered scripture as far as most scifi fans are concerned, same with star trek - not very good, yet considered the word of god - i utterly despise star wars, and i don't have a problem letting people know that, no matter how much of a contrived attempt at non-conformity it may appear... i don't really see a point in you questioning my belief unless you want to have an argument about how good star wars is, which i'm more than happy to have - for the record, my idea of good scifi is warhammer 40k and firefly and new battlestar galactica - i would put star wars in the top 3 worst science fiction worlds ever made

perhaps hate is too strong a word, but everyone in the world overuses the word hate...

as for republic commando, i made me play it - and i'm glad that i did (where did i complain about not wanting to play it?)... it's a decent shooter, just set in a bad scifi world

Out of curiosity, what scifi movies/series do you enjoy (both film and game), or do you just dislike the scifi genre in general? I agree that the Star Wars films are targeted at family values and whatnot (though I wont call them kiddy crap) but thats what I like. Makes me feel like a kid again.

For me, the best game would be Kotor. The first one. Kotor II was just a fairy "MOD" of the first game, with a few new features. The fisrt game had one of the strongest points in the gameplay that was the Story, the second game failed to create such an interestng and appealing Story.

The Universe to create a Story is big and the possibilities are almost umbumbered, but with that, Obsidian couldn't  match the story created by Bioware.
X-Wing was another great game, that was way ahead of its time, and yet there's no other game like X-Wng these days.

you know...I respect your opinion and all...but acting like it's kiddie crap is kinda arrogant.  Nobody says you have to like these series, but to pretend they are junk and not worthy of it's acclaim is pretty rediculous.  Millions of people love the series for a reason...and it's not becuase it's sci-fi porridge...it's becuase they are great.

You have to remember, Star Trek came out during a time of racial inequality and when sci-fi was not mainstream.  The whole idea behind a show set thousands of years in the future with a diverse cast and fully fleshed out universe with great morals and plotlines really brought it to the forefront of society.

And Star Wars is not "kiddie crap".  It's more like a western meets martial arts set in a sci-fi world.  Yes it appeals to family values, that doesn't make it kiddie crap.  There is plenty of grown up themes in the Star Wars universe, such as murder, political strife, good and evil, and other grown up stuff.

you need to understand the context in which these two series evolved from...

I'm not a big fan of SW movies either anymore, but I don't see them being childish a problem(afterall I was a kid when I saw them the first time), and I do enjoy the games a lot. No other game really gives you as epic fights as Jedi Knight series, I wish they made a medieval version with the same combat system, magic working as the force powers, but untill that happens I'll have to settle for SW, and at least it's scifi even if not the best kind. I understand where you're coming from as I also have a theme that I hate, WW2. Despite that I picked up CoD2 and liked it a lot, despite the theme a good game is a good game, since you managed to enjoy Republic Commando I think you should give a try to some of the other games as well if you haven't already.

i love science fiction, that's why i dislike star wars so much! it feels like a fairy tale in a scifi skin instead of a fantasy skin, there's stuff i enjoy about star wars and stuff i outright love about star wars, but most of it i find it just... terrible - and it's not just that it's bad, but that people expect science fiction fans to like it because it's considered scripture, i think it's a sad state for the geek community when it's considered contrived dissentience (for.. what? attention?) for disliking something as mediocre and childish as star wars

speaking strictly film, stuff like terminator (1 & 2), alien (1 & 2) and serenity are amongst my favourites - and the first matrix film, and if it can be counted as scifi, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind is one of my favourite films ever

in television, it's battlestar galactica, firefly and stargate sg1

in game - there are dozens of games i like with generic scifi settings (ranging from quake 2/4 to half life and system shock 2 and command and conquer), but the only scifi worlds i really truly love are the warhammer 40k and the fallout universe... i guess i'm just a sucker for humanity suffering

almost all science fiction worlds are pretty bad in my experience - or have stupid flaws that i find it diffuct to deal with, i should accept it and enjoy it for what it is, i'm sure someone would tell me, but i just can't

Yeah, Kotor and Jedi outcast are the best, Kotor 2, not so much... Maybe after the restoration project, still nowhere near those two.

Eh? I enjoyed KOTOR II about as much as I did the first one. Had it actually been completed when it shipped I don't doubt it would've been a better game than the original.

And Star Wars is not "kiddie crap". It's more like a western meets martial arts set in a sci-fi world. Yes it appeals to family values, that doesn't make it kiddie crap. There is plenty of grown up themes in the Star Wars universe, such as murder, political strife, good and evil, and other grown up stuff.

you need to understand the context in which these two series evolved from...

dnuggs40

i didn't mean to imply that i think it doesn't deserve worldwide praise - i am very respectful of other peoples' opinion and while i vehemently defend my own, i don't try and push it on others... i don't think that i am right and they are wrong, and worldwide acclaim is just earned by having a lot of individual, legitimate opinions... so i don't have a problem with that

as for star wars' charms - i'm not talking about the overall or specific individual themes or subtexts or social commentaries of the films, i'm aware of what star wars and star trek both are, and what they have both done - and there are many brilliant things to each, i don't mean to say that it's bad, but that it's bad scifi

'm talking about the science fiction universes as science fiction universes - i find that star wars has a complete lack of culture and depth to the civilisations, everything is sugar coated and it feels like a fairy tale in a science fiction skin - while it may deal with adult themes, the way it explores them is anything but mature, whether it's the dun dun dun dun da dun iconic bad guy or the style of the combat - plus, take the acting and the writing and stick them between some bread and you got yourself a ham and cheese

same with star trek, i'm familiar with the cultural situation of the time (though i'll never truly understand it, i wasn't alive at the time), and just how amazing it is - but that makes it a good show set in a scifi world, not a good scifi world to set the show in... from the silly alien of the week syndrome to the military r-tardation of the federation, i can't take any star trek seriously as a science fiction (tng is one of my favourite shows btw, the characters, writing and intertwining plotlines are some of the finest i've experienced)

i do think star wars deserves worldwide acclaim and praise, and if it's sitting in your dvd library, it's there because it deserves to be there - i just don't think it deserves to be there for the science fiction universe it's set in - and as a scifi, i really do hate it

I see where you are comming from.  I agree, for instance, Warhammer 40k has a much more fleshed out universe with way more adult themes.

Thank you for further explaining your opinion :)

i utterly hate star wars, but of the few star wars things i have played, republic commando was a pretty good game - nothing spectacular, but i haven't played better... but i do avoid star wars as much as i possibly can

war3

Makes me feel like a kid again.

dude he just said he likes warhammer 40k, firefly, and battlestar galactica for scifi movies/series.  give it a rest!  just cuz someone doesnt like star wars and he voices his opinion doesnt mean we should all hassle him about it. I mean C'MON!

Easy there fella, I wasnt giving him crap nor did I feel I was giving the impression of doing so.  And sorry, somehow I skimmed over the part where he said he liked those other franchises.

My favorite Star Wars games would have to be (in order, fave-top):

Galactic Battlegrounds - Original and Clone Campaigns - Yeah, even though it was really nothing more than a reskinned Age of     Kings, it was still great. It really captured the epic scope of pitched battle in the Star Wars universe, it also contained just about every type of soldier and vehicle seen in the movies and told a pretty good story. (I also hear that Empire at War is pretty good, and considered by many to be better than Galctic Battlegrounds, but I havn't picked it up yet)

Battlefront II - Really a pretty decent class based shooter, I had alot of fun with this one. The base classes were nicely balanced and yet nicely varied between the different factions. Then you had the unlockable Elite classes which varied hugely from faction to faction and were a ton of fun to play and added tons of flavor to the game. On top of those you had the Heros which were all different based on the faction and the map/situation. The Heroes are what really made the game IMO, they were very powerfull, and rightly so. Being able to stride through the halls of Princess Leias Correlian Corvete as Darth Vader, striking fear in the hearts of the rebels while cutting through them like butter w/ your lightsaber or pummeling them w/ your force powers...or gracefullly flipping through the air w/ Yoda becoming a virtual whirlwind of destruction was one of the coolest things in ANY class based, multiplayer FPS EVAR.

KoTOR - Really the best Star Wars RPG ever made. NeverWinter Nights in the Star Wars universe? yes please. Say thankee sai, big big. The best part of this game, IMO, was seing how things were around the time of the birth of the Rebulic. I'm a huge history buff, so being able to get a glimpse into the history of the Republic was a VERY cool thing.

My personal all time favorite was KOTOR 1, great plot and stuff, even if you saw the plot twist comming, it still **** slapped you to the face. Another favorite was deffinetly Republic Commando. I'm a big fan of old school RTS, so Galactic Battlegrounds gets my vote as well. Lastly, and the most regrettably, my favorite was SWG until it screwed the pooch. It was an awsome game before the nerf bat was swung...until it was like hitting a dead horse...over...and over...and over...and over...ugh...but yeah! I love the SW universe, all time favorite movie would be Empire Strikes Back.

Kotor 1 was amazing, period. All the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight Series are also great (Except Jedi Academy, which fell short). and of course those Lego Star Wars Games let me relive childhood on multiple levels, so they deserve a shout out.
