you know...I respect your opinion and all...but acting like it's kiddie crap is kinda arrogant. Nobody says you have to like these series, but to pretend they are junk and not worthy of it's acclaim is pretty rediculous. Millions of people love the series for a reason...and it's not becuase it's sci-fi porridge...it's becuase they are great.

You have to remember, Star Trek came out during a time of racial inequality and when sci-fi was not mainstream. The whole idea behind a show set thousands of years in the future with a diverse cast and fully fleshed out universe with great morals and plotlines really brought it to the forefront of society.

And Star Wars is not "kiddie crap". It's more like a western meets martial arts set in a sci-fi world. Yes it appeals to family values, that doesn't make it kiddie crap. There is plenty of grown up themes in the Star Wars universe, such as murder, political strife, good and evil, and other grown up stuff.

you need to understand the context in which these two series evolved from...

A-S_FM

i didn't mean to imply that i think it doesn't deserve worldwide praise - i am very respectful of other peoples' opinion and while i vehemently defend my own, i don't try and push it on others... i don't think that i am right and they are wrong, and worldwide acclaim is just earned by having a lot of individual, legitimate opinions... so i don't have a problem with that

as for star wars' charms - i'm not talking about the overall or specific individual themes or subtexts or social commentaries of the films, i'm aware of what star wars and star trek both are, and what they have both done - and there are many brilliant things to each, i don't mean to say that it's bad, but that it's bad scifi

'm talking about the science fiction universes as science fiction universes - i find that star wars has a complete lack of culture and depth to the civilisations, everything is sugar coated and it feels like a fairy tale in a science fiction skin - while it may deal with adult themes, the way it explores them is anything but mature, whether it's the dun dun dun dun da dun iconic bad guy or the style of the combat - plus, take the acting and the writing and stick them between some bread and you got yourself a ham and cheese

same with star trek, i'm familiar with the cultural situation of the time (though i'll never truly understand it, i wasn't alive at the time), and just how amazing it is - but that makes it a good show set in a scifi world, not a good scifi world to set the show in... from the silly alien of the week syndrome to the military r-tardation of the federation, i can't take any star trek seriously as a science fiction (tng is one of my favourite shows btw, the characters, writing and intertwining plotlines are some of the finest i've experienced)

i do think star wars deserves worldwide acclaim and praise, and if it's sitting in your dvd library, it's there because it deserves to be there - i just don't think it deserves to be there for the science fiction universe it's set in - and as a scifi, i really do hate it

A-S, how old were you when you saw Star Wars for the first time? If you managed to analyze the world of SW this deeply when you were a child, then colour me impressed... First time I saw the films (I don't remember how old I was, but pretty young, 7 maybe), all I cared about is how awesome Jedis are. And Darth Vader (dam dam dam dam da dam) was pretty cool back then... I think nostalgia is the main reason to why "everyone" loves Star Wars. And those movies are still great IMO + you don't see adventure movies too often nowadays.

i utterly hate star wars, but of the few star wars things i have played, republic commando was a pretty good game - nothing spectacular, but i haven't played better... but i do avoid star wars as much as i possibly can

Dude, its just a movie series. While some of the movies aren't perfect (And use physics from another universe), it is a great storyline. Maybe you don't like it....But hate it? It looks like you're acting against the norm for the sake of it when you say that.....

And who made you play Republic Commando anyway?

why? star wars is kiddy fariy tale crap, it's the harry potter of scifi and yet it's considered scripture as far as most scifi fans are concerned, same with star trek - not very good, yet considered the word of god - i utterly despise star wars, and i don't have a problem letting people know that, no matter how much of a contrived attempt at non-conformity it may appear... i don't really see a point in you questioning my belief unless you want to have an argument about how good star wars is, which i'm more than happy to have - for the record, my idea of good scifi is warhammer 40k and firefly and new battlestar galactica - i would put star wars in the top 3 worst science fiction worlds ever made

perhaps hate is too strong a word, but everyone in the world overuses the word hate...

as for republic commando, i made me play it - and i'm glad that i did (where did i complain about not wanting to play it?)... it's a decent shooter, just set in a bad scifi world

you know...I respect your opinion and all...but acting like it's kiddie crap is kinda arrogant. Unlike Dnuggs, I don't respect A-S_FM's opinion.  He reminds me of West Coast Hipsters, a group/mindset in which it's super cool to hate anything mainstream simply because it's mainstream.  I concede that only Star Wars 4 and 5 are good movies; the rest are mediocre.  But Start Trek and ST: TNG were revolutionary and at times, brilliant.  They were pivotal in bringing SciFi to the masses and brought many novel ideas to the genre.

Going against the grain for the sake of going against the grain is lame.  If you really hate something that's popular, I can respect that.  But I get the impression that you hate things because they are popular; often this makes one feel superior to the idiot masses.  Really you should feel embarressed for falling for such an easy mind trap.

I still hope that someday Obsidian creates a complete game. Some stuff in KOTOR II like the villains were great.

Ignoring all the remarks and the issues that others have about other people's opinions(which is fine with me, some people hate it, some people like it, some like me, love it) I'll tell you what I consider the best Star Wars game series (since most of them were in a series of games).

1. X-Wing, Tie Fighter, X-Wing Alliance - Dogfighting FTW

2. Dark Forces Series/Jedi Knight Series - This includes Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast, & Jedi Academy.

3. KOTOR Series - KOTOR II was rather weak in comparison, but its got great gameplay elements.

4. Battlefront Series - Especially Battlefront II, a shame that some of BFI's maps weren't carried over into the sequel.

5. Empire at War - Including Forces of Corruption, makes a grand epic strategy game.

6. Super Star Wars - These games, based on the original movie trilogy (which is far superior to the Prequel trilogy) were awesome for sidescrollers.

Those are my favourite Star Wars games, however I still enjoy the others that I failed to mention (Republic Commando, Rebellion, Lego Star Wars I & II, Rogue Squadron series etc.)

I guess I'm just a sucker with Star Wars, and whilst others don't like it, I still respect their opinion as long as they respect mine.

My TOP 5 Star Wars games:

  1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
  2. Star Wars: Republic Commando
  3. Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast
  4. Star Wars: Battlefront 2
  5. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords

Darth_Kane

Awesome list.  I wouldn't know about SW: Republic Commando because it doesn't run on a GeForce 8800 (crashes to desktop), and I've never played Battlefront 2 (my internet connection is too laggy for online play).

I played Rogue Squadron to death. Fun game and thanks for mentioning it, Jack. Also thanks to whomever mentioned Star Wars Rebellion. I've played that more than any Star Wars game and it was undeservedly panned on its release. I could lose myself in it even now, and not just for the sake of nostalgia.

I'm not a Star Wars fan by any means, but I'm partial to the X-Wing series.

I like Republic Commando. It's fast pace and fun; unfortunately, it is too short.

I know it doesn't mean anything since the game was killed by developers, but Star Wars Galaxies before the new game engine was awesome.  It was not only the best Sar Wars Game, but it was also the best MMO.  with that game dead, I would have to say that KOTOR is great series and that the Battlefield games really did well to cature the feel of the world.  I recommend both KoToR games and both Battlefield games to get the most out of your Star Wars gaming.  I do think outcast was good too.  The one that is hard to find, but a great (I mean super great) is Star Wars Rebellion.  I you can find it you have lucked out, if not, it will always be the star wars game that never got a fair chance.  Though long story short Galaxies before NGE is the champion.
