If your getting one for gaming make sure it has a good graphics card, something like a 5870, or a GTX 480M.

This is the best advice here.

Also, wrong forum.

That pretty much sums up what everyone whos educated in PC Gaming will tell you. However if your circumstances dont allow you to game in a stable location and a gaming laptop is necessary I would recommend the ASUS G73JH-A2 - Should be relatively close to your price range and have ALL the goodies you would need to game like a rockstar :)

such a negative board... For that price ncix has deals on several msi and asus laptops in that price range that would play everything easily.

Or you could go with a 15 inch alienware, however I know people on these boards are going to blast the product. Really though with an alienware you get quite a good experience with a nice casing, awesome screen and really great cooling. Also, I dont care what anyone says... a gaming laptop is really the best and most flexible gaming experience possible. Gaming laptops are also less than half the price they were just a few years ago.

You suppose that justifies their prices? lol

I picked up the ASUS G73JH-X1 a few months back for $1599.99 (Canadian) and it hasn't let me down yet. I have a desktop gaming rig that sees the lions share of my time, but when I'm on the road or feel like blobbing in the living room I fire up my G73JH and game away. It's really well put together, extremely silent and not overly heavy considering what ASUS packed inside of it. It also comes with a Republic of Gamers backpack for totting it around and a really decent ROG mouse. Here's a link to the specs: http://www.anandtech.com/show/3662/asus-g73jha2-affordable-xlsized-gaming

im coming from owning a dell xps m1730 which cost me 3 grand 3 years ago so ive a bit of experience in this area :) of course they arnt a complete waste of money but they are pretty close (buy them at an extortionate price and then you sell them for pennies) and by this i mean the fact that there is zero upgrading in them (hdd + RAM excluded) so if you buy one you will be good for about 2-3 years of gaming and then settings have to be turned down which is pretty crap when your spending such a large amount of money, my advice is still the best route

Disagree completely the laptops of today are amazing.. And I may some day move to them over building a desktop due to how much cheaper they have become.

I would agree with this if it weren't for the fact that the most demanding and best looking game out there is STILL Crysis from 2007.. Crysis 2 from we have heard may be even less demanding of the first.. And outside of that there are very few games out there that are demanding as Crysis.

ya that is true, pretty sad when you think about it :( but i still cant suggest getting a gaming laptop due to the price and lack of upgrading (could be a few games inn a while that are more demanding than crysis, metro 2033 springs to mind)

do you really need to be able to max every game, every time? PC games are scalable for a reason, some people are so foolish about it... Metro 2033 takes alot to max, but is fine on any gaming computer. Also, getting a gaming laptop today is nothing like it was in 2007, its so much cheaper and makes much more sense.

No, but from my own experiences, unless you buy something absolutely top of the line, you won't just not be maxing the game out, but turning the settings extremely low in a matter of 2 years or so.

However, $1,700 will buy one hell of a good laptop.

Also lets not forget that while gaming laptops have been improving greatly since 2007, graphics in games haven't :P

I wouldn't spend $1700 on a laptop since you can't upgrade them and you run into law of dminishing returns full force around the $1200 mark. Here's a good one from msi for $1150

MSI GX740-235US NoteBook Intel Core i5 450M(2.40GHz) 17.0" Wide SXGA+ 4GB Memory 320GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 Broadway XT
