The best competitive video game is Quake IMO.kdawg88This. QuakeLive.com is free, so it doesn't hurt to check that one out. Almost no one plays UT3 or UT2004 anymore (I know, I've checked like last week) so I would NOT recommend getting those even thought those are great games (2k4 > 3 IMO). Counter-Strike: Source is much more friendly for newer players, as the graphics are more kind to the eyes and you won't be pwn'd by people who have been playing the game for a long time. There is always Black Ops, which I personally will not buy but it is out there with a big community like BC2. Honestly, it seems like you are looking for games like CS:S, BO, and BC2. Those games are very open to FPS players who aren't into getting owned like no other. If I am wrong, feel free to check out Q3, QuakeLive, CS1.6, and Battlefield 2 (not Bad Company!).

Team Fortress 2 definitely.
Killing Floor is also worth checking out.Like Left 4 Dead it's a co-op zombie killing game, but I find it to be better than L4D.

Quake takes more skill than css though For real. Quake is a joke to play if you're a newbie. I can get the best score and K/D in any pub with no effort in CS:S. In Quake, its extremely hard just to get 3 in a match, or win in a duel.
L4D2 is the best co-op game anywhere. True co-op, where you can only succeed through proper teamwork. biggest_loser
It's a forced mechanic, since you HAVE to rely on another player if you get grabbed or downed. Not that it's a bad game, but I find KF to be a better co-op environment. People work together to survive, not because some shifty game design tells them they NEED to be rescued by another player.
