As for FPS, Counter Strike is always a top pc game and the new one (Counter Strike Global Offensive) comes out August 21st and for only $15. Also, Team Fortress 2 is now free to play.
For something similar to Socom 2 (best game every :)) you got Ghost Recon Future Soldier, like was already suggested, coming out tuesday on PC. Difference is the cover sysyem. Also, you have Spec Ops: The Line, also coming out tuesday. Spec Ops is a bit more of a toss up whether or not it will be worth it/last but personally, thats the direction I am going. Originally thought about Ghost Recon, but the PC delay killed it for me.
Competitive (skilled) - Quake Live, Tribes Ascend, Unreal Tournament, Counter Strike
Competitive (noob) - Call of Duty 4, Battlefield 3
Coop - Left 4 Dead
Funny, I always dominate in Tribes and only do reasonably well in BF3. You only say it's skilled because it hasn't been consolized, therefore you make yourself feel better by saying that because it's more of a PC game it requires more skill. As long as you avoid certain servers in BF3 you will find plenty of skilled players.Competitive (skilled) - Quake Live, Tribes Ascend, Unreal Tournament, Counter Strike

A complete newbie can kill a veteran in both CoD and BF. In the games I mentioned above, you cannot.

Ah.... You can in Tribes, it's not as hardcore as you profess. Many weapons have large splash radii, and often the person with who buys the most content has the best equipment, which is just wrong. COD is a noobfest no doubt, but many people hate on BF simply because some elements were tailored for the the consoles.[QUOTE="SovietsUnited"]Funny, I always dominate in Tribes and only do reasonably well in BF3. And Quake Live is an amazing game TC.

Yeah, that actually seems reasonable, except Tribes. I'd say that the average joe could play decent. But it's not as accessibleas CoD or BF
My personal all time multiplayer favorite is Battlefield 3, but if you don't want that I'd say Bad Company 2 is damn amazing and only has a couple of expansions (one is the Vietnam expansion, and the Onslaught co-op expansion).
Of course Call of Duty 4 is $20 and still has a great community (if you can dodge the hackers), and you can't go wrong with the Counter Strike games either. You also have a poop ton of free to play titles: Battlefield Free to Play, Tribes: Ascend, Team Fortress 2, etc.
Um... no. It's completely different than UT3 and it's definitely based on skill. I mean yeah there's the occasional lucky shot, but a better player will make harder to make shots much more often than a new player. And while Tribes Ascend may not be that fast paced, UT3 is pretty damn slow.Tribes is soo boring and simple almost no skill, more luck then skill. No idea why some people on here would recommend it.
It's basically a crappy version of Unreal tournament 3

The one I like the best for the gameplay itself is TF2.
I also like COD4 for the hilarious community.
Obviously it depends what you are after.
My personal favourites are L4D2 (vs), Red Orchestra 2, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2
I definitely gravitate towards games where teamwork is essential and ACTUALLY HAPPENS *glares at BF 3.*
Most other anarchic type shooters fail to hold my interest after 20 or so hours. The feeling of being a useful part of a much bigger machine is what gives me joy in any competitive game.
