When I play a video game, I'm very much into the story. The best I've played is Penumbra Black Plague, Prince of Persia The Sands of Time, and Brothers in Arms Earned in Blood. I'm wondering what everyone else thinks...

On a side note, (and I hate to add this) but I've never played Halo from beginning to end. Does it have a good story? And what about the second?

For shooters, BioShock has a tremendous storyline: one that develops just like a RPG's would. RPG-wise, Mass Effect has a great story behind it, also The Witcher Enhanced Edition.

Yes, they do.

The Thief games, Cryostasis and Stalker hace good stories too.

I know you may not want to read a novel but if you end up playing Halo 1, i highly recommend reading Halo: The Fall of Reach, its a great book and helps you understand the Halo universe a bit more.

It's true. The story can't make up for terrible gameplay.

Mass Effect also sucks IMO, although I feel the urge to reinstall it after seeing Star Trek...

Idk, I'd agree with half-life, I never played the first but if you get the orange box and play HL2+episodes, I personally got extremely engrossed in the story and what was gonna happen next, still highly anticipating what they are gonna do story-wise in ep. 3 :) (from playing the second I feel I didn't miss much story-wise from the first, by the time everything was said and done I pretty much understood all that was going on)

Tradition adventure games like Grim Fandango, The Dig (ignore the awful Gamespot review), and Full Throttle tend to have great stories.

For something different you might check out Psychonauts which has a great atmosphere/story for a platforming game.

Indigo Prophecy had a pretty good story.

Then you have no room to comment on the story. The story in half life diden't even get kicking untill HL2 ep1.

Devil May Cry 4 story is nice, esp every time Dante mock the demon bosses lol. Warcraft 3 Reign of Chaos also good. Fable: The Lost Chapters is quite good. Splinter Cell 3 (Chaos Theory) has some nice twists, but you have to be native English user to understand the details because there is no subtitles (I hate Ubisoft for that!).

The Baldurs Gate series and the Fall Out series. The story of KOTOR was great too but I didn't like KOTOR 2 much. It was like something was missing..maybe it's just me :)

The story of Mass Effect was great but the X-box 360 version had soooo many bugs....they almost ruined the game for me. I wonder how the PC version is/was. Looking forward to Mass Effect 2....Bioware, lunch it when it's ready...please!!!

The best story ? Ms Pacman ofc :D

Mass Effect had a very disappointing story. By the end of the game I just did not care about the galaxy, the characters, anything really that was going on. I actually got to the VERY end of the game and never finished it because I just didn't care about anything that was happening. (alien bugs are going to eat the galaxy again ~ oh noes~!) Just really lame science fiction. Like Star Wars without anything relating to Star Wars, if that makes any sense.

Any Valve game. Its not about "story" as in content, but they provide it in such a way that you are always interested and want to know what happens next. EG. HL2 or TF2 "Meet the X" we all want MOAR!!! L4D provided too little, give us a tinsey bit more pls Valve!

Not gonna lie. Came here to say Max Payne 2. The first one had a pretty good story, but I thought it sort of dragged on too long. Classic, though. The second was pretty awesome the whole way through.

Next is probably Mass Effect. Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway is really well done in the story telling department, but it's better collectively. Road to Hill 30, then Earned in Blood, followed by Hell's Highway.

I'm guessing your not much of an RPG fan if those are the only games you've played with good storylines. The RPG genre is unmatched as far as storylines go. Here are some recommendations of RPGs and other games with good storylines:

Baldur's Gate series

Fallout series

Placescape Torment

Arcanum

Clive Barker's Undying

Giants: Citizen Kabuto

No one lives Forever 1

Deus Ex

Half-Life series

Max Payne series

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay

System Shock 2

And that should keep you busy for a litle while :D

Just because it's old doesn't mean the story isn't any good. I agree, the combat and gameplay itself isn't up to snuff by today's standards, but the story is still one of the best around.

I assure you, I sincerely and wholeheartedly enjoyed Planescape, One of the greatest games ever made on any platform. I'll dare and say: never before Planescape, and never after any Game,Book, Movie was able to present story so unique, strange and delicate.

I honestly can not understand how can someone who actually has taste, as a concept, play planescape and at least not acknowledge it's greatness. I mean the STORY, QUESTS,CHARACTERS, the atmosphere you have to be blind not to see all this. The only thing I can assume is that you played with fighter character, never put any points in charisma or intelligence, missed every single side quest and all the great dialogue because of this. If it's what is the case, I encourage you to play the game again, put all your points in intelligence and charisma, even use cheats if necessary just have both of them 18+. and try playing a Mage. Do not use violence unless absolutely necessary. even in the very first location mortuary, do not kill any zombies, talk to them. you will not have to attack a single creature if you play your cards right, and you'll experience some of the most strange and moody quests there is, follow this path through rest of the game and you'll see why planescape is a legendary game. (And why it scored 90+/100 on every gaming site and even got itself on Gamespot's "Best Games Ever list")

Gameplay was good in P:T, it wasn't great like in BG: Shadows of amn, but it was not anything bellow good.

As for forgetting old games that is one more thing I disagree with you on. We will N*E*V*E*R forget legends, and we'll allways keep Arrogantly pointing out to all the next generation of noobies that we've played all of the very best Gaming has to offer. I mean common? How can anyone who played System Shock and Deus Ex stand by and not laugh at someone who thinks bioshock is the first game to combine RPG with Shooter?

Got to go with Planescape Torment too. It's one of those games that totally deliver a brilliant story you never saw before. I dust it off every once in a while and in around 7 playthrough, i discovered new stuff every time.

Last year I played all the legacy of kain games and beat them all within a month since I largely missed that series growing up, and I have to say it's clearly the best storyline experience I had with any videogame, the voice acting is top notch and the dialogue between characters is very addicting and brilliant. Although the storyline can get kinda confusing. The world itself and the theme of the whole story is also pretty darn neat. Felt like I read an epic novel at the end of the last game.

I won't bother to reply to every comment individually like I usually do, but I'll say this:

I agree that torment has horrible combat and I wouldn't recommend it to people who want good gameplay and nothing more. I found myself getting bored of it at times but the story kept me playing till the end and I didn't regret it. It was just beyond awesome. Torment is more of an interactive book than a game, really.

100% agreed. :)

The thing about Planescape is, well, according to most everyone who loves it, it is great like a novel is great. Great story, characters, atmosphere. I tried playing it three times, and got bored each time without getting many hours into it. As a story, as a narrative, it may be great. But as a game it just isn't my thing. And the thing about stories is that they ARE NOT UNIVERSALLY APPRECIATED. There are many "great" novels that I simply despise. I have great taste too! According to me! (same can be said about the rest of humanity). Guess what! I hated Deus Ex and System Shock too! And I love a good narrative! The thing is, games that ride on their narratives alone are like really, really slow novels--in which case one is much better off just reading a good book. That's where gameplay is key, and Planescape's (not to mention Deus ex/System Shock's) essential gameplay is not a timeless achievement of universal bliss, no matter how you spin it. It's an old, clunky affair that rides on waves of nostalgia.
