christ.. you havnt really lived if people think halo has the best story line of all time.... starcraft and warcraft have the best storylines for sure

I thought that the Longuest Journey and Dreamfall was the best. Its maybe what made the games too slow because it concentrates too much on the storyline instead of the actual gameplay. But the graphics looked great. And the story was like watching an actual movie.

The thing about Planescape is, well, according to most everyone who loves it, it is great like a novel is great. Great story, characters, atmosphere. I tried playing it three times, and got bored each time without getting many hours into it. As a story, as a narrative, it may be great. But as a game it just isn't my thing. And the thing about stories is that they ARE NOT UNIVERSALLY APPRECIATED. There are many "great" novels that I simply despise. I have great taste too! According to me! (same can be said about the rest of humanity). Guess what! I hated Deus Ex and System Shock too! And I love a good narrative! The thing is, games that ride on their narratives alone are like really, really slow novels--in which case one is much better off just reading a good book. That's where gameplay is key, and Planescape's (not to mention Deus ex/System Shock's) essential gameplay is not a timeless achievement of universal bliss, no matter how you spin it. It's an old, clunky affair that rides on waves of nostalgia. jedinat
Ok. I think that there's three kinds of games, the one's that say "F* the storyline" and just focus on the gameplay (Doom), the one's that focus on the storyline more than actual gameplay (adventure games especially) and the one's that are a mix of both (Deus Ex, which btw has amazing gameplay as well if you haven't noticed.) I see games as an interactive storytelling medium, but they can also be pure entertainment. I personally want to see both kinds of games. :)
I personally have never been very interested neither into books nor movies, mostly because they are not interactive. Games are interactive, they are the ultimate entertainment, which is why I want to see them progress in storytelling as well as gameplay.

And what game storyline/gameplay combination you DO like ?
Planescape Quests were great, Exploration was fun and thats the half of RPG gameplay.
and what have you against system shock/deus ex gameplay? They both mix RPG with shooter in interesting way.
I was in agreement with you until the second half of your statement. Sorry, but the stories of starcraft and warcraft are essentially equivalent to Halo in the grand scheme of video game stories. Blizzard fails at making stories that are beyond superficial, but the amazing and addictive gameplay they can produce makes most of their games top-notch. The PC games with the best stories that I have experienced thusfar are the Baldur's Gate series (Baldur's Gate 2 will forever be my favorite game), Fallout 3, the Half-Life series, both Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect (kind of a cliche story but the environments and fantastic gameplay make it much more immersive and interesting, though the side quests are annoyingly repetitive), Vampire: Bloodlines, and the Neverwinter Nights games are okay but not really that great overall. Generally, not many PC games focus on story. Adventure games seem to focus more on storyline, and since I haven't really played any of those I can't recommend any. Truthfully, I can only think of a few console games that have truly great stories as well. Video games are severly lacking in that department, at least for someone like me that reads often.christ.. you havnt really lived if people think halo has the best story line of all time.... starcraft and warcraft have the best storylines for sure

The Final Fantasy series was already mentioned (see what happens when you read the thread instead of just responding to the topic?) but specifically in that series I most enjoyed 7, 8 and 10 (7 and 8 have PC ports that I know about).
Also, I'm suprised nobody's mentioned Jade Empire among the already mentioned Biowares like Mass Effect and KOTOR 1/2.

lol.
Mass Effect had such an epic interactive story. The most epic storyline I've ever played.
Also, Bioshock like many others have noted is shockingly awesome. Those are two good ones to start out with.
Then you have Fallout, Crysis, Dead Space and others.
I actually wasn't really into the Halo stories but played the games anyway cause they were and are so much fun. The stories
were kind of confusing to me. Maybe I'm borderline retard.
(Note: Half-Life has a great story as well:twisted:
If we're talking stories, then I'd have to say The Longest Journey and Dreamfall; the Gabriel Knight series; for rpgs, I'd say The Witcher, especially toward the end.
Mass Effects story isn't very origonal, its just presented so well that it seems origonal and epic. i don't think i've ever got into a story more than in Mass Effect just because it was presented so well.
The Witcher, Mafia, and Cryostasis are the three best i can think of.
The Baldur's Gate Series.
So far my favorite RPG of all time.
BTW no one mentioned the Diablo Series..... I thought they were very good if not excellent.
I never played Planescape Torment. I just can't get past the dated gameplay.
Thats my point too, mass effect story is not really amazing, its generic and simple without any originality or some plot twists and cliff hangers. Pretty much you know what will happen and how things will turn out since the game keeps telling you, i dare to say that sometimes it felt repetitive. Mass effect was presented well and had that cinematic camera at the videos but nothing really epic happened in the game. Simply people who havent played many games fall for the cinematic view and the way is presented, also they propably havent seen or played many games and the cliche and generic way the story is played out in mass effect makes them think that its epic.Mass Effects story isn't very origonal, its just presented so well that it seems origonal and epic. i don't think i've ever got into a story more than in Mass Effect just because it was presented so well.

Before it was shamelessly copied 1,000,000,001 times by several other companies... KOTOR I.
Kotor II had a good story but a horrible development team (Obsidian who are famous for destroying franchises).
Morrowind but you have to read the books ingame else you will not understand squat. Unfortunatly the game is graphically dated.
Planescape Torment has an interesting story and setting but is more dated than Morrowind.
Baldurs Gate I, II but again very dated games.

Funny Kotor 2 was better then Kotor in almost every single way. The only thing holding it back was polish and a lot of bugs. But that is not Obsidian's fault that is Lucasarts fault.

My thoughts exactly. It's old and decrepit...let it die already. I played a quarter of the way through and thought it was awful. It seems to me like people like to bring up the fact that they've played these old games to appear wise, sanctimonous or something because they think they're the"root" of PC game evolution.
Not at all, I played it in 1999, and I played it last few months, game is a Masterpiece.
It seems to me people like to put it down because they never played it or because its the vogue thing to do.
Always been a Masterpiece.

I assure you, I sincerely and wholeheartedly enjoyed Planescape, One of the greatest games ever made on any platform. I'll dare and say: never before Planescape, and never after any Game,Book, Movie was able to present story so unique, strange and delicate.
I honestly can not understand how can someone who actually has taste, as a concept, play planescape and at least not acknowledge it's greatness. I mean the STORY, QUESTS,CHARACTERS, the atmosphere you have to be blind not to see all this. The only thing I can assume is that you played with fighter character, never put any points in charisma or intelligence, missed every single side quest and all the great dialogue because of this. If it's what is the case, I encourage you to play the game again, put all your points in intelligence and charisma, even use cheats if necessary just have both of them 18+. and try playing a Mage. Do not use violence unless absolutely necessary. even in the very first location mortuary, do not kill any zombies, talk to them. you will not have to attack a single creature if you play your cards right, and you'll experience some of the most strange and moody quests there is, follow this path through rest of the game and you'll see why planescape is a legendary game. (And why it scored 90+/100 on every gaming site and even got itself on Gamespot's "Best Games Ever list")
Gameplay was good in P:T, it wasn't great like in BG: Shadows of amn, but it was not anything bellow good.
As for forgetting old games that is one more thing I disagree with you on. We will N*E*V*E*R forget legends, and we'll allways keep Arrogantly pointing out to all the next generation of noobies that we've played all of the very best Gaming has to offer. I mean common? How can anyone who played System Shock and Deus Ex stand by and not laugh at someone who thinks bioshock is the first game to combine RPG with Shooter?
Amen
By the way guys, my Final Five Poll is up and it includes some of the games mentioned (sorry Deus Ex :( ), so vote when you can.

Have you ever played the first two Thief games. Damn games have better gameplay probably than any other game I've ever played. There's so much fail in this thread.
