I've obviously been out of PC gaming for the past few years, so am new to this purchase and download type gaming. I haven't bought a PC game since F.E.A.R. I think. Any suggestions for reputable, quality sites other than Steam (only one I know so far)?

Have you tried contacting Steam themselves and asking about the problem?

Have you actually tried or are you just basing your idea about Steam support on experiences from the distant past? Steam is a wonderful service now and fully supports all of its games and attempts to solve any problem you might have.

Looks like Steam is the dominant winner around here. Will there be enough games for me to play on Steam since I don't have a monster gaming-geared desktop, just a regular, average laptop?

There are tons of games on Steam, including ones that will run on just about every PC.

They have the entire id Software library on Steam. Going all the way back to Quake, Doom and Commander Keen. Plus everything in between. There are lots of games that are capable of running on a laptop or older desktop. You just have to make sure to read the requirements and/or try the demo before purchasing it.
