Both of those are great, another would be the E7200, amazing CPU for the price.

I would go for the Q6600....although the E8400 does perform 'slightly' better in 'some' games we are seeing many applications now supporting quad cores and in which case a Q6600 would SLAUGHTER any duel core. So its only a matter of time untilgames properly support quads aswel.

BTW, some people will say that when games support quad cores the Q6600 will be outdated...note how an AMD X2 CPU still copes with any modern games even though its very old in comparison the the Intel CPU's!

Is the difference between the Q6600 and the E7200 worth the 80$ difference if I don't overclock?

It really depends what you do with your PC, if you can take advantage of a quad core CPU then yes, otherwise no.

Agreed! If your considering the E7200 the price difference doesent make it worth getting a Q6600!

I'd be using it for gaming/music/internet possibly all at once.

If you multi-task and use programs/games that require Quad then by all means the Q6600 is the best (currently). Since I have one, I know. But E8400 will be good until probably the end of this year. Then the Nelhelm's are coming out, and a new motherboard socket will be used. 775 will be over and it will be 1000 something.

it will be skt 1366, and... why the heck does intel want to put 6 cores in a home system? 4 cores is overkill for every single game out there , so why 6 cores?

Intel knows most people use computers for things other than gaming. Like it, or not, multithreading is the current trend in the PC world.

This.

I really don't understand all this "futureproof" non-sense. Think of it this way, would you actually spend the $600 for a 9800 GX2, when the 8800 GT will be enough? Probably not, unless your loaded. Overclock the e7200 just a bit, and it should be able to run anything you need flawlessly, and when this "future" comes and you start seeing all this flashy new tech, just use that extra $70 difference + money you saved overtime, and BAM, you've just gotten the best of both worlds.
