Is it true that installing a good sound card like Soundblaster X-fi will give me better frame rates in my games compared to using Realtek onboard audio? And if so, is it enough to justify spending the money for a sound card? Specifically in an online game like Age of Conan. I have a dual core processor and a Ati Radeon 3850 hd vid card with 2 gigs of ram on my mobo but can only run on med settings to get good fps. Will I see much of a difference by installing a sound card?

Somebody posted some results that suggested there was a small gain to be had, but I went down that path and saw no difference at all.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm sure Soundblaster puts that in their add to make you think its a big difference.

Yeah, in the modern PC world of dual and quad core CPU's a sound card will barely boost FPS, if at all.

Unless you are an audiophile a sound card is usually a waste.

Thanks for the info. I guess i'll just add another vid card to run crossfire and get a better power supply. Would upgrading my ram from 2gb make much of a diff?

Thanks, and how has the 4850 512 been working for you? I wish i had waited another week and gotten the 3850 512 instead of the 256 but that's what i got and now i'm thinking of just getting another one so i can do crossfire.

The most you'll probably gain from a dedicated sound card is 2-3 fps theoretically. In most cases, people see no performance increase in fps. Get it for the sound quality.

I wouldn't bother. I'm using on-board Realtek HD surround sound, before which I had a Soundblaster Audigy 2 card (both using the same 5.1 speakers) and all I can say is don't bother with Creative sound cards. I didn't see a drop in FPS when I switched to onboard sound, even in World in Conflict and Crysis. The Realtek interface and drivers are far more polished than Creatives', and with creative cards you have to buy a proprietary front panel or buy a custom cable to use your headphone and mic inputs - not worth it. The only thing that creative has is EAX but even that isn't the best thing since sliced bread. Go with Realtek, save yourself some money and put towards a new graphics card- that's where you'll see the real perfromance boost.

Thank you so much. This was really helpful. Just wanted to be sure. I personally think the Realtek sounds great with my 5.1 speakers. Thanks you all for taking the time to reply to my post.:)

Yeah, the onboard sound cards come HD now. All you really need are some nice speakers. Save yourself $50-100 and spend it on something nice, or save it. And, you're welcome. Enjoy.

Btw, your avatar rules.

no point really,
i would have used on board sound but dell (im never buying a del again) made me put a xtreme gamer into it

but for hidhend systems most ppl have a sound card, for me i dont really hear much of a difference
unless the music file is shat quality like 128KB's (i think its KBs, 320 is the best i think,)

anyway, just dont bother, get a better vid card, or wait for the new ones, sound cards are expensive for a good one

Right...

Microsoft's Windows team made the bold decision to rewrite the Vista audio stack from the ground up, and in doing so they removed hardware acceleration for DirectSound. That's right. They took hardware support away from the most ubiquitous sound API implemented in games over the past several years.

As a result, in many of today's games, all those feature-laden sound cards, with their multiple channels, audio extensions and hardware accelerated processors, become no better than on-board sound running in software mode.

I thought everyone knew that? I dont know if they have changed this, I bet Creative is not happy.

Just google this: "hardware audio in vista" (without the "")

Then say this again... ;)

Hardware sound accseleration has been capable since day1 for Vista...
