We have also gotten information from a tipster that Battlefield 3 will be similar to Battlefield 2 and will support up to 40 players per team. There will also be 24 different vehicles that you can choose from and 17 different weapons. Like Battlefield 2, the game will also feature unlockable equipment.

I was hoping that with the improvements made in bandwith and hardware, they would do something like 128 vs 128 player battles. After all, the PS3 has MAG and that worked out pretty well.

It depends on how large the maps are going to be. 40 players is almost 8 squads, which is very decent for any BF2 map. EA isn't known for leaps and bounds, so this is pretty good news. 128 would be insane though.

80 players sounds good, a sure pre-order if it's PC exclusive, BF2 still wipes the floor with most online shooters even though the shooting mechanics themselves leave something to hope for.

If they could have 250 people or whatever they claimed in one place then i would be impressed,,,,they are spread out over 4 maps.

I personally love it sometimes when an enemy team does that. Easier for me to simply run over them with a jeep. More targets clustered together the better for me.

meh, I never played BF2124 with more than 32 players, 64 servers just come down to a boring nade and rocket spam fest at both sides at choke points, 32 players was always the sweet point betwen "still fun" and "still tactical" for me

Well, we haven't seen how MAG works in the real world yet. Plus, they really had to scale down the graphics to accomodate that number of players.

Sounds like a nice upgrade, personally I wouldn't want Mag size games as that would probably get out of hand quickly.

Tribes supported 128 players in freaking 1998. Why is it taking the BF series so long to catch up?

Nade spam was ridiculous in 2, I agree, but in 2142 I found 64 player servers to be totally awesome. I haven't played it in a while but I think only a couple classes got grenades.

BF 2142 handled 64 plays much better than 2.

More != good. You don't need hundreds of players to make it fun. Just good gameplay and a good number of players to fill the maps without encountering massive problems like nade spamming and choke points. I would take 80 players with excellent maps and gameplay over 128 players with passable maps and good gameplay.

nades are a unlock that every class can get

yes 2142 did the 64 player thing better, but I kinda still didn't like it, mostly probably beacose I liked to play on small infantry only maps, so it maybe has more to do with my playstile than the thing being broken :P

well we will see how the 40vs40 maps will turn out and I'll base my judgment upon them

64 player games in BF2 are great fun, so adding an extra 16 people should be good. As for MAG - wait to see what they actually make, rather than the headline grabbing titles. Having 256 players in the same "game" is very different to them all being able to be in the same place on the same map. The videos shown at E3 suggested 8v8 or 16v16 fights advancing to new checkpoints.

I didn't think every class had grenades, did they? Can't remember, been a while since I fired that game up. I might be thinking of pistols though, I know engineers didn't have them.

Yeah, the original comment I was responding to was referring to 2142 I think. Did Engineer's in 2142 have grenades? Man, can't even remember if that's the correct class name it's been so long!

Similar like in a futuristic setting? Battlefield Vietnam was the only battlefield game that I truly enjoyed. I hope they make a sequel to that or a similar setting eventually.

Really? I think that was the most disliked version by most people. That's actually the only one I never played, didn't have the hardware to run it when it came out and was still enjoying 1942 at that time.

It's true that it wasn't the most popular. I think that it was mostly the timing because like you, many people still played 1942.

engineers had the SMG, instead of the pistols

but i am quite sure the nades were a global unlock (second after sprint thingy iirc) that was unlocked to all classes

meh re-instaling the game tommorow anyway, since I want to play some Bf, so stane tuned to learn the truth about nades^^

oh and I realy realy hope they put dog-tags from 2142 into bad company 2 and BF3, it was one of the best things about the game, with everyone trying to get the tag of the nb1 guy on the laderboard :D

They had dogtags in Bad Company 1, so I'm sure it will be in Bad Company 2. And it sure as heck better be in BF3, since that's the one I'll be getting :)

I hope they have an unlock system similar to BF2142 which had a much better ranking / weapon / class system compared to BF2 which was slow and limited.

Very slow... Anyway, it's great news, 40 x 40 will be awesome, but I still want to try something with 128 players...

I think 64 players is plenty, but I'm not opposed to the upgrade. I would rather see improvements in other areas, like game mechanics, or destructible environments (within reason).

I personally love it sometimes when an enemy team does that. Easier for me to simply run over them with a jeep. More targets clustered together the better for me.CommanderShiro

In project reality firing into an enemy main base is a bannable offence. Lets hope EA learns something from that because it works out well.

That doesn't have anything to do with killing others to get plane/heli first. But most servers it seems will ban you if you do that and some will ban you if you base rape. Goes by the servers...
