The reason Win8 is recommended is because BF4 supports Dx 11.1. Win7 supports it but not as well as 8 does. What this will do is enable better CPU optimisation

We use DX11.1, there are some optimizations in it (constant buffer offsets, dynamic buffers as SRVs) that we got in to the API that improves CPU performance in our rendering when one runs with DX11.1. This will be in BF4.

http://www.bf4blog.com/battlefield-4-on-windows-8-will-have-better-cpu-optimization/

are you guys ready for it?

Yup :)

Feel bad for all those people who bought Nvidia's high-end GPUs with a mere 2GB of vRAM though. Battlefield 4 is recommending at least 3GB.

It doesn't really matter if you have a ton of system ram.Wouldn't worry about it unless you're playing above 1920x1080. Most people aren't, I think.

It's recommending windows 8 because of the cpu optimization - http://www.bf4blog.com/battlefield-4-on-windows-8-will-have-better-cpu-optimization/

For higher resolutions maybe. at 1080p I imagine 2GB will be fine.

Guess we'll wait and see. I'll be playing on low soon after launch anyway to get me closer to 144fps for my 144Hz monitor

Aside from the Windows 8 piece I am golden.

Which brings me to my next point.... It looks as though Bf4 uses DX 11.1 / 11.2 which is Win 8 only.  Anyone know what the advantages to going to 11.1 /11.2 are?

Yea.. it has to do with the Direct X drivers (11.1 pre 8.1 and 11.2 after 8.1)

Yeah it means you're registered but you're not a Junior member yet. They will check your stuff and if they think you're "worthy" of an account to post with they will enable it. It usually happens without you knowing though. I just returned one time and I was able to post suddenly

Then if you are active and post regularly you'll be promoted from junior member to a normal member. For me I got accepted in like 2 weeks and then went from Junior to normal member in about a month.

That's actually on the shorter end. you have actual devs signing up for GAF who take months to be accepted. Hell Major Nelson only got an account there yesterday I think after weeks of waiting.

You can also get rejected, kept getting that "moderation queue", then after a few weeks, got an e-mail I don't fit their "standards" or something. Clearly I was too good for them! :P

On topic, these requirments don't seem that bad, though I wonder if my OC'd 2600K and 670 will be maxing out the game at 1080p with at least 45 FPS. Recommended specs usually aren't counting in max settings.

Good thing I upgraded my CPU and OS during the summer, or I wouldn't have met most of the requirements. Looks like I'm definitely upgrading my GPU next year, really hating the 1 GB of VRAM.

My Windows 7 is already feeling obsolete, and it feels like I just bought it. Thanks Microsoft, nobody scores as many begrudging customers (or hostages?) as you do. Guess I'll have to wait for Windows 9 so I'm not left behind so quickly...

Its ridiculousness. There's no plausible reason why we should be forced to upgrade to W8. That PS4 is looking a little brighter today.

Starting to feel good about upgrading to a 7950, also glad that I already jumped to W8 I just hope it's a decent enough increase over 7.

BF3 was pretty well optimized and 4 looks to run a enhanced version of the same engine so I'm sure most people know what to expect.

Windows 7 released over 4 years ago. How long do you want software to last? Back before XP we got a new Windows nearly every year. Everybody got used to XP and assumed you could get 10+ years out of an OS. That's total bull.

A new OS every few years isn't a bad thing at all.

Good to see the min specs are more or less the same as BF3. Looking forward to trying it out Oct 1, hopefully it's as optimized as BF3

But 7 works fine. What reason besides lining the pockets of MS is there for us to upgrade to 8? I dont want to upgrade my OS just because they say we have to.

That's not what's happening though. Its not optional when games start recommending it to play major titles. Soon it will be part of the minimum requirements and why? Because MS said so?

Microsoft should just get their OS cycle down to 6 months. Why not, right? Poor people and their dated software is holding everybody back.

its no different than nvidia slapping their logo and "plays best on" stamp on video games. Win8 has better cpu optimization, it makes sense to show it.

Win 7 will be supported in most games for probably another 4+ years.
