When did PC games switch over to the smaller-style box?

I remember when the boxes were huge... the new style is more convenient.

I'd say that it became "standard" not much longer than a year ago. They're trying to make PC games seem cool/not obscure.

It also allows game stores to stock more games on their shelves, well console games anyway.

I miss the big boxes of yesteryear.... 200 page manuals. The SC2000 manual was simply awesome. Now its all PDF (grumble, moan)

still, I dont like games like WoW, their stupid cardboard boxes wont fit into my DVD rack.

I was about to say I miss all the goodies found in the big boxes.  Extra maps and SWEET manuals.  I cry everytime I think that I didn't get the original BG2 manual. (bought the version with the expansion)

On the other hand, the standard and nice size keeps the CDs in good shape and the boxes easy to organize.

The youngest Big Boxed game which I own is KOTOR1. From that time I have seen only DVD boxes.

Some of the collectors / special / limited edition games come in big box but everything else has finally gone to the DVD like case. I personaly like the DVD like cases for games a whole lot better than the jewel cases.

PDF manuals are horrible and its a shame that sometimes not even collectors editions of games are big boxed sometimes compliation packs might be but rarely these days.

I'd say about 3 years ago new games came out with small boxes but there were still large ones around.
