why would it matter what cpu, graphics card, memory, or any other such stuff? i dont know the brand of cdrom drives.... one is a cd burner, the other is a dvd rom.... ASRock dual SATA-939 motherboard, amd 64 CPU, 7800gt graphics card, 1gig of kingston ram.... honestly i dont see how any of that would effect if my optical drives show up in vista.... i am running Vista Enterprise....non-commercial... for educational institutions and large businesses. it is pretty much like Vista business except with a few extra features.

Well it gives me an idea of your hardware... That is why I have it in my sig so If I say something I don't have to type and explination. You know the brands of the CD and DVD? Make sure the mobo is configured for compatibility and try a fresh install. (usually the brand is on the front) If you can find the brand then maybe someone can go to the brand's website and see if there is a fix... or even to Asrock's sit to see if they have a fix.

I heard with many SATA motherboards that has only one IDE, you need to install the driver before windows can recognize its there

They "were" working until he installed some things... Hey do a system restore... And then only install one thing at a time and reboot until you find the offender...
