Upon announcing BioShock 2's DRM earlier this week, 2K was hit with a wave of criticism from players. To nip the nerd-rage in the bud, they've decided to loosen the game's copy protections.

" There will be no SecuROM install limits for either the retail or digital editions of BioShock 2, and SecuROM will be used only to verify the game's executable and check the date, " announced 2K community manager Elizabeth Tobey. " Beyond that, we are only using standard Games for Windows Live non-SSA guidelines, which, per Microsoft, comes with 15 activations (after that, you can reset them with a call to Microsoft.) "

Originally the game was going to have a five-machine limit for activations. Crisis averted, though. No need to give the game any one-star reviews on Amazon - not that you'd ever stoop to such a thing.

Good to hear, though I think I am one of the few that really cares less about DRM. Though for the majority that do, nice info.

Why the hell is there SecuRom on the Steam version anyways? I don't want that crap on my computer, and Steam itself already deals with copy protection much better than SecuRom.

Agreed with the TC. The only games deserving of the Amazon 1 star rating is truly sick DRM enabled games. Haven't seen many lately though.

You people do realize (ok, maybe you don't) that activations does not equal installations. You can install and uninstall it on the same PC as many times as you want, but as far as activating it through GFWL, there is a limitation on how many PC's you can activiate to have the game installed. So 15 activations is more than anyone would really ever need.

I'm with you on the DRM. What has me wondering though is will there be only one save game at a time because of having to save at GFWL? Also will it be checkpoint saves or save anytime?

I... think so. I don't know. The 'each PC can be reactivated without counting against you' was a SecuROM thing. I didn't even realize GFWL counts activations, so I don't know the specifics of how it works.

15 activation limit with GFWL? No, thank you. That is still an activation limit to me, if I have to call Microsoft to get more activations.

Now, unlimited activations I don't really mind, but seriously, replacing one program and subplanting it with another is not a reduction in DRM. In fact, it is keeping everything almost the same.

No buy on this one. I loved the first BioShock, and I was like "WTF?" when they were talking about a sequel. BioShock doesn't need a sequel.

I have never understood why people opt to not buy a game just because of an activation limit. It just never made sense to me.

At this time my only DRM concerns are of the activation variety, they are essentially full priced rentals, install so much and you have to buy a new copy (sod that).

If there are no activation limits I do not care about securom use, if there are no way.

What's so hard to understand? People don't want their games to turn into a paper weight one day.

If you change the hardware inside it can flag as a new/different PC, yeah. If you just uninstall it and reinstall later SecuROM didn't care, though.

LOL, I'll STILL buy this game and enjoy it. DRM or no DRM. I don't expect to make 15 changes to my PC so I'm good ;)

I've never really found a problem with copy-protection, though I actually didn't like the one included in the retail copy of the first Bioshock. But really. 15 activations? Who would install/reinstall a game that often?

It's the fact that you pay your money for it and they treat you like it's not even yours. That's what I come up with.

Depends on to what extent. Usually replacing something like the hard drive or something major. Upgrading RAM, vid card, etc. won't do it.

If you substantially upgrade your PC it might think it's a new rig. But that's why they give the 15 activations... which is more than I will ever need for the life of this game.

I guess it will go unlimited activations eventually, just like the first one.
