I'm trying to decide between those 3 games of the 5 from my Bioshock Infinite preorder (already own Spec Ops and Civ 5). I tend to lean away from open world games (Mafia), but really enjoyed Sleeping Dogs recently. Duration (I've heard Darkness is short) doesn't bother me as I'd rather have a short, tight, cohesive experience over padded length. My inclination is to get Bioshock 2 to "complete the set", but my gut says it will go real cheap right before Infinite comes out and the other 2 might be better, less iterative experiences.

  • Mafia 2 is an average game. The complaints about too much driving holds true. It's not an exaggeration. The gunplay when you do get to engage in gunfights is solid, and some of the set-pieces leave you wanting more because there are so very little of them.
  • The Darkness 2 is a power-trip game. The gameplay is a lot better than the original Darkness. Powers are fun to use and upgrade. Although it can get old sometimes ripping someone's heart out for the 100th time. The story is a decent continuation, but nowhere close to D1's storytelling.  New art-style, drastic change from the original, and only if you want more Jackie and Jenny.
  • Bioshock 2 - story not as great as Bioshock 1, but the gameplay is better.

Darkness 2 and Bioshock 2 can be had for $5 each most of the time.  The Mafia 2, an average game, should be cheaper but it's usually too high of a price for what its worth.

Mafia 2 is a great game only problem is the open world aspect, it's good to have it, but they didn't use it, instead of finding and robbing shops, or stealing cars, there isn't much to do except the story. Darkness 2, didn't start playing it yet (too many games to finish), but if the game is anything like the demo, it's excellent, I especially loved it for the art and gameplay, story also pushes it decently. Bioshock 2 is too average to consider. That's my order.

Bioshock 2 is the best of those, highly underrated single player campaign that does it almost as well as the original.

darkness 2 is a decent shooter with some cool moves, get it for a good price

mafia 2 is a shallow, convoluted game that is only worth it for the graphics. Skip unless it's really cheap (like 5 bucks)

Mafia 2 was ok but flawed,it could have been much better.

Darkness 2 is good but short

Bioshock 2 is great and keeps you playing.

Out of those I had the most fun with The Darkness 2, even though it is the shortest of the bunch. It makes you feel like an absolute beast in the literal sense and it has a really engaging story.

Mafia 2 is quite atmospheric but the story is very weak compared to the original Mafia and yea there is a lot of driving.

Bioshock 2 is more Bioshock. If you like Bioshock 1 you will like Bioshock 2 but that also goes the other way around.

Bioshock 2 is alot of fun the combat is better then the first and there more plasmids and weapons. Its also a long campaign took me 19 hours according to steam I replayed through one section so probably closer to 18. This was on the hardest difficulty with respawn chambers disabled.  And there is dlc for a 5 hour expansion campaign on top of that.

Thanks, that's a lot more response than I expected. I had kinda been leaning towards The Darkness 2 as what I really wanted to play (too much thought over a "free" game) and I think that's the way I'll go. I like to feel overpowered and don't mind a short game (with my backlog, that's probably a good thing). I tend to be more of a "want to see the new things; story, art, characters, etc" type player instead of a challenge seeker.

Bioshock 2, simply because it's got a interesting ending sequence - if you really like Bioshock, that is. I didn't play Darkness 2 because I didn't like the direction they took. Mafia 2 was so dull I never finished it. It's quite pretty, though. So given the proximity to Bioshock Infinite, I'd say Bishock 2. Just don't count on any built in Xbox controller support. They ditched it for the sequel.

I haven't played The Darkness games. You should get Bioshock 2. Its a pretty good sequel. I enjoyed it. The opening is fantastic. Don't get Mafia 2. Just don't. Its a blight on gaming that someone could build such a hollow shell of a game.
