Hi

I was just wondering what specs you have to have to play bioshock maxed out, because ive heard people being able to play it max with a X1950X, but when i play the demo i sometimes have FPS as high as 70 and in the next room it can drop below 10 FPS.

i have this spec:

Windows Vista Home Premium

Intel Core2Duo E6700 @2.66

Asus P5K

Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX

1TB hard drives

and am unable to run the game at a smooth playable rate, even with Nvidias Beta drives which made no difference (ive also tryed without) and when i put the graphics down it still runs badly, so could this be to do with some software problem or hardware or what?

any help would be appreciated thanks

emmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm sounds strange i have this and run it all high:

e6600 2.4ghz
2 gig ram
x1950 PRO

all high settings constand 30fps - 60

try this:
uninstall / reinstall
install the newest drivers
if that doesnt work install some older drivers
if you have overclocked put it back to stock settings

also u say u go to 70fps to 10 fps does the 10 fps stay for long ???? or is it just quick. I mean i drop from 60fps to about 20 for a few seconds then it goes back up to 30 or 60 depending on whats happening.

like i said above if it just drops to 10 for a few seconds then thats ok since you are after all playing in dx10 mode but if its for a long time and it does it in place which havnt got much movement on the screen then it might be a problem

well thats the thing i havent been playing in DX10 because i thought that would make it even worse and to give an example: the part where the lift blows up and falls to the floor i can hardly move because if the FPS but in the room before that it would be like 60FPS surly it shouldnt be this patchy :(

Well there's no reason for you to be getting FPS as low as 10. So it obviously has to do with Windows Vista, then.

this actually sounds wierd coz I can run it on max and my spec aren't as good as yours.. could it be a windows VISTA problem ?!

my reg:
P4 3 Ghz
1k ram
Gforce 7900GT
win XP

before installing the beta drivers the game was running like crap, the beta drivers smoothed the gfx a bit and decresed the crashes rate.

On the bioshock forums there seems to be alot of people having problems running the demo on 8800 cards, but apparently the full game runs fine.

It's a demo. I doubt they knocked it out a week ago from the final build, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Another thing worth trying it upgrading your other hardware drivers (sound, motherboard chipset etc).

Also try tweaking the graphics settings.

anyone who says this is a vista related problem is an RTARD i have vista and an 8600 gt, i max the game out getting 40-60 frames per second.

you need to lock your frame rates. and play in only full screen mode.

By locking frame rates do you guys mean enabling VSync? Because VSync usually just gives me worse performance...

in order to lock/unlock frame rates you will have to change to 360 controls (its a bug, i think)

Well all the Vista haters can rest assured its not Vista. He probably has norton running in the background lol :P I run an e4400 at 2.97ghz, 3gig G.Skill ddr2 800, evga geforce 8800 GTS 320 meg, x-fi gamer and I run it with everything up on its highest settings and average around 80fps on fraps. It has dipped to 40 but thats for like a second or two. I wonder if he has a dedicated sound card because a game like this you can lose 20fps using onboard crap audio.

I saw talk about Vista for this problem. It's not. I'm running it on Vista, on a laptop none the less with worse specs than yours and have DX 10 on. I'm running everything on Medium with no problems. Try turning DX 10 on. I heard Vista has some issues with DX 9 and I'm kind beginning to believe it because games coming out now are running better than games like Splinter Cell Double Agent or Rainbow Six Vegas.

With all due respect, that's a "RTARD-ed" statement, Irelevent (not directed to you, Dynamite). There's no way of knowing for sure whether or not Vista is a part of the problem or not. If Vista is the TC's problem, for instance, it's almost certainly not because the new OS, across the board, creates frame rate drops--rather, it might be because of a particular quirk that pops up when Vista encounters computation "X" when paired with hardware devices"Y" and "Z," resulting in a little chugging through pipeline "A" for "X" number of seconds... while running games that utilize memory in this way, or GPUs in that way, while in DX10, or not; who knows. The fact that you're not having Vista/Bioshock trouble means little or nothing in terms of troubleshooting.

There are countlessreal bugs associated with any given piece of software--including Vista--that will show up in some situations, or some machines, and not others.

On the other hand, there's also no conclusive evidence that the TC's problem is Vista. Frankly, it could be anything. These kinds of little performance issues can be the hardest problems to solve--god knows what combination of factors, Vista-related or not, is causing a slowdown on his machine and not the next guy's.

The best solution, sometimes, is to cover all known bases (driver checks, game patches, OS updates, etc), and aside from that, keep your eyes peeled for others reporting--and hopefully fixing--similar problems. That's the beauty of the internet. It might take a little time, but if there's a real problem with your setup, there are others out there with the same issue... and you'll find them eventually.

Good luck!

Play it on Windows XP. Vista has a lot of bugs and performance issues.
