Time to lock this thread.......go to a sexuality forum if you want to talk this stuff...this is a GAME forum!!
ttomm1946
It is game related - it's all about what will or will not be allowed in SWTOR.
And why lock the thread? Some people want to discuss the attitude of the game and the SW universe towards homosexuality. It's not good enough to simply say it's their game, their rules. What if Rockstar said there will be no black people in GTA, would you use the same excuse then? If you don't want to 'be corrupted' by a sexuality discussion then don't come into this thread. Simple.
Yeah, they're trying to cut down on flame wars. They've had a lesbian option in their past what, 3 games now? They had a gay option in Jade Empire, too. I highly doubt they're banning discussion because they're homophobes/discriminatory. Either that or Lucasarts is pressuring them to say that homosexuality doesn't exist in Star Wars... either way, it's an interesting situation.
We can talk about anything game related in this forum and it is game related as I said above. Also its about relationships, not sex, and discussing homosexuality is neither immoral or inappropriate. Perhaps if it were discussed more openly and frankly we would not have the disparaging attitude of "teh gey....hur hur...."this whole thread exist outside the primary purpose of gamespot..there are 13 year old kids that come to these forums...they are here to learn about games not sex..period....

lol I can't believe all the people here who simply shrug their shoulders and say "It's the rules." Rules are not there to be obeyed blindly, if they are unfair or discriminatory you must challenge them. Imagine if Rosa Parks had just thought "its teh rulez"
Exactly what I was thinking. This isn't a country we are talking about, it's a forum - analogies work better when they are relevant. Bioware set up the forum and technically they can ban and lock whatever and whoever they want. Saying we must stand up and challenge unfair oppression is a bit over-enthusiastic. People don't live in the forum, they choose to go there and post under the terms and conditions Bioware set-up. Essentially we are complaining that Bioware won't let people post particular words in an online forum which is owned by them. I don't think they went about this the best way, but what people are saying about it being Bioware's forum is true.Yep, when one wishes to fight for his/her civil liberties, a PC game forum will definitely be the first place to visit.

Except that was a PUBLIC bus, and there is no laws from stopping them from deciding what they want on THEIR PRIVATE forum board.. I have seen people's threads closed down or banned for far dumber things, but yet again the board is not ran by the public.. GET OVER IT.. So if Gamespot banned black people from posting you'd be ok with that cos it's a private forum?
(These analogies are getting a bit theatrical now but the point is the same).

how would we know that a poster is black unless they blurted it out on a message board? What does race have to do with talking about videogames? and lastly racism and preventing talk about one's sexual preference are two totally different things so you are being very dramatic and the point isn't the same. I was in a volleyball league about a year ago when we had two people that were going to miss a game so a friend of mine brought two women that were dating each other as subs. no one had a problem with them playing until one of them kept shouting out lines like "oh that's my gf in the sand." "boy look at my gf's ass when she dives." Finally the ref told her to shut up and the ref was right. it's not that because she was a lesbian but because she was a dumb ass. her sexual preference has nothing to do with volleyball and none of us wanted to hear about her being a lesbian (because they were both ugly)So what? Those are their forums and they have the right to delete any thread they deem inappropriate regardless of the subject matter. Can you blame them for deleting a thread that 99% of the time turns into a bash fest?
Way to blow things completely out of proportion and try to call out unfounded prejudice.

Because those people were totally fighting for their civil liberties when discussing a game feature.
And about "oh it's a video game forum, such discussions don't have their place there", remember that Star Wars is not "just a video game", it's a well established and developed universe with an enormous fan base. Heck, many people say their religion is Jedi! TOR tries to capture this universe as well as it can, and the KOTOR games are part of the official canon. Seeing BioWare's past approach to sexuality in SW, and the fact that they confirmed you can develop romantic relationships with the AI partners, it's only logical that people will talk about such things. Banning them is like banning any discussion about Jews when you talk about WW2 just because it's a controversial subject.

Yet another argument that falls on its face due to logic.. THEY DIDN'T BAN any one, they closed down a message they felt was disruptive.. Hell it most likely WASN'T EVEN bioware doing it, but a mod outside the business.. Its called freedom of speech and I am sorry buddy it actually WORKS in Biowares FAVOR because they can decide what to allow and what not to allow posting messages.. The Black people comparison DOES not work in this precense because thats descrimination, they were closing a thread they felt wasn't approraite or did not follow their rules get over it.. If you don't like it GO to a different forum, its a PRIVATELY owned forum.[QUOTE="Sammojo"][QUOTE="mirgamer"]

Hey guess what, TOR's forum terms of use aren't against talking about homosexuality, related or not related to the game's content.
Banning those terms was stupid, period. It's like banning "dog", "stupid" or whatever other words because you can offend someone by using them. The Community manager "un-banned" them and agreed he over-reacted by saying that homosexuality doesn't exist in SW.
Banning profanity is NOT stupid, so your answer was pointless. Or maybe you find the word lesbian to be offensive?

Some do who cares in the end Bioware and gamespot for that matter can run the forums how ever the hell they like it.. And you have no right to make them do what you want.. Because in the end it is YOU violating THEIR freedom of speech not them, it is their forum andproperty they can attribute to any rules they like under the first amendment..Discrimination is discrimination. I changed the analogy from homophobic discrimination to race discrimination because people are very willing to stand up and speak out when they see racism but seem to be not so bothered about homophobia. It's all intolerance however you look at it, and whether it's in the public or private sphere it should not be swept under the carpet a la "gays don't exist in Star Wars", nor by making the words gay and lesbian offensive words and trying to pretend it doesn't exist.
Who cares if it is even racist?! They locked a thread, they have made some of their most popular games like Mass Effect have a lesbian relationship in.. I am sorry guys but locking a "thread" does not compare to that you will have to provide further evidence.. Furthermore they can do what ever the hell they want on what posts they do or do not want locked.. ITS A PRIVATE forum, its not a public forum..Discrimination is discrimination. it's not discrimintation at all. Bioware isn't preventing homosexuals from posting on their boards. They are preventing people from talking about homosexuality on their boards. Your analogies are dramatic and off base. once again, there's a difference between freedom of speech and being a dumb ass and people on that board crossed it.Discrimination is discrimination. Ok,i posted once here before, and i will do so once again...
I have read most of the new posts, and all im gonna say is...
The homosexuality topic had no place on a game forum, the people who claim that BioWare is bigoted are following a trend, the trend of liberalism.
BioWare didnt ban the topic,a moderator did,and even IF the whole staff of BioWare did ban the topic, its because that topic had nothing to look for on a game forum.
Second,BioWare does not hate homosexuals, hell, theres a sex scene in the citadel (Mass Effect),if you choose to be a female character, well you get the picture...
Even if the staff of BioWare was bigoted,so what, they still make great games, and i couldnt care less, wheather or not they hate homosexuals,as long as theydeliver us great games, like they did,so many years in a row now.
As far as im concerned this topic should be closed, theres no point in disscusing this, since, well, nothing really happened...
[QUOTE="vitriolboy"]You're an idiot. Stop pretending things are there when they clearly aren't. I think what he means, and please correct me if I'm saying this wrong, is that there is no evidence of discrimination. Just because a moderator locks a topic which, quite frankly, is totally off topic does not make all of Bioware homophobic.
So let me get this straight. Bioware took steps and did what it had to do to prevent a massive flame war of bigotry and ignorance from breaking out on THEIR forums and it suddenly means Bioware is against homosexuality? Personally as you can see from this thread right here, BIoware made the right decision on locking that heard it turned into what you see here.MadCat46
And the comment "gays don't exist in Star Wars" and adding the words to the banned word list?
I can see why bioware didn't want a huge flame war to start, despite being in the 21st century, intelligent enough to split atoms and travel into space. There are still alot of bigots in humanity who cant grasp two peoples love for each other no matter what the gender.

I'm not quite sure why they would deny the existence of gays in the Star Wars universe, but adding gay to the banned word list does make sense since it is generally used in a derogatory way on the internet (that's just the way it is).

Then they should add stupid, idiot, fail, dog, crow and many others.
This IS discrimination no matter how you look at it, by this logic all terms that can be used derogatorily should be censored. The fact is that it is hurtful and offensive to ANY homosexual person to see the word for their sexual orientation censored and looked down upon. I wish people would stop retorting to the old "OH PLEASE WONT SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN" homosexuality is no different than heterosexuality, and people need to stop thinking that the minute the word homosexual or gay is mentioned, that it means sex. This game is rated Teen, and I think teens are old enough to learn about a homosexual relationship.
Star Wars: The Old Republic, is a MMORPG, which at its very base is fundamentally about social interaction, and no matter how you look at it, people will talk about love/relationships, so why get all in a spiffy when people talk about it, and more specifically in a homosexual way on a MMORPG forum. The blanket excuse "there is no gay's in Star Wars" is just retarded. Last time I checked, there is a lot of things that are not in the Star Wars, that are probably discussed on that forum.
I think a better solution to this is to just impose rules not to use derogatory slander against people (which is probably a rule), then rely on the mods doing their job to enforce the situation. This post was specifically posted in the website feedback part of the forum which in my mind is the right place to address something like this, so don't think the guy was just randomly spouting this on the forum. To all the people who think that sex has no place in video games should go back to playing child rated games. I also think that intelligent discussion of sexuality in video games should also be allowed T or M rated game forums.
Lastly one can say that this it was Bioware's forum, and whatever they want to do they can do. Yea sure, but I think if Bioware has any respect for its decency as a company they would remove ANY blatant displays of ignorance or discrimination. I realize that this whole ordeal had been dealt with in a nice way, this is just a response to other people's statements that I believe are not right.

I agree with pretty much everything you said except I don't think this is discrimination. That's okay though, we can have different opinions and still get along.

The thing is one of the top rules for ANY company is to do their best to steer clear of any political issues, homosexuality falls under that. Like it or not they have to do whatever is in their best intrest and talking about homosexuality is opening a can of worms for them. Remeber that the US is their prime customer base, and it's still a very sensative issue in this country and I'm sure it's something they would prefer to avoid as it may actually hurt their sales in the long run because lord knows the US is full of bigotry with plenty of conservative groups that would do everything they possibly can to diminish the sales and reputation of Bioware. It's not discrimination, it's a smart business move.
At the same time, many homosexuals find the terms gay and homo to be offensive, so removing those words from the forum helps to prevent them from agitated. Bioware did the right thing here, it may have gotten under some peoples skin but in the end it was the right move. People get offended at the silliest things no argument over that, but no group is going to threaten to boycott your game or march up on your studios because you used a word like moron.
As for no homosexuals being in Star Wars, well as far as I know their is no evidence there is. I'm not an expert on the EU but as far as I know there has never been any signs or hints that homosexuality exsists in the universe. It's a valid point, they didn't create this universe they are just taking what has already been laid down and building it up a little more.
And for all the asinine fools out there who think Bioware is against homosexuals. How many of you have played Jade Empire? For those of you unfamilar with that game, which by the way was made by Bioware, if you made a female character there is a very clear and obvious romance path you can take with another female character. You know, homosexuality, in a game, made by Bioware. They must really hate homosexuality, so much so that they made it a popular option in one of their games.
It's not discrimination, it's a smart business move...

While I think you could have stated your thoughts a little more politely, I agree with what I've quoted above. I think that the world really needs to move on and begin being more accepting of third-genders, but it is not Bioware's job to do that.
BioWare has banned users of the Knights of the Old Republic forum from discussing the subject of homosexuality.
Some threads had been set up discussing the potential issues around gay relationships within the game. The threads have since been locked, and the words "homosexual", "lesbian" and gay are censored on the forum.
Even discussions of the ban are being locked. At the bottom of the thread "GLBT discrimination in forums?", community manager Sean Dahlberg wrote, "As I have stated before, these are terms that do not exist in Star Wars. Thread closed."
You sure about all this, Sean? Only there was a lesbian character in one of BioWare's very own games, according to GayGamer.net.
Since this news was posted on Eurogamer, they reopened the thread:lol:
Epic fail.
sauce
Baranga
They should never have reopened that thread. They just created precedent for any future complaints... bad legal move. The TOS of their message boards prohibit discussion of a sexual nautre no matter the subject or sexual preference of the people in the thread. I've seen them close threads talking about female anatomy... so it's not the homosexual community they are targeting.
